To ask why they have my address?

Received a letter the other day - wrong person's name, correct address. Never heard the name before and we have lived here 3 years - have received other mail for previous tenant but not this one. It's from a solicitor's firm, 35 miles from here. I'm curious as to why they have my address? Would I be unreasonable to ask them? Obviously letter is unopened and I will put it in the post box as RTS.

Presumably that person used to live there
Hardly a mystery

Grimbles · 28/08/2019 11:09

The simple answer is that it's a previous tenants address.

Ponoka7 · 28/08/2019 11:10

You need to put, Not at this address, not RTS.

I'd contact them as well.

AmIThough · 28/08/2019 11:12

That person may have lived there previously. They might have written the wrong door number or one letter wrong on the postcode on an autofill form.

Just RTS and write not at this address. It's not a big deal.

Grimbles · 28/08/2019 11:14

I'd just open the letter first and then claim an honest mistake personally...

Milsplus3 · 28/08/2019 11:18

Cross out your address on the envelope and write return to sender not known at this address, it’s probably a mistake on the postcode so unless you get more in that name I wouldn’t worry

lotusbell · 28/08/2019 11:19

Just thought it a bit odd that in the 3 years we have lived here we have had no other mail for this person. I know it's not a big deal, I wasn't implying it was. Thanks for all the replies anyway.
@Ponoka7, the return address is on the front, I've circled it and written not at this address return to sender on it.

@Grimbles, tempting!

Open the letter; I had this a few years ago and it was a before-court letter addressed to a made-up person at my address (ie identity theft of sorts). I logged it with the police who gave me a crime number as a crime had indeed been committed, contacted the solicitor and it went away.

lotusbell · 28/08/2019 11:21

Thanks, @wink1970, helpful to know, if not worrying!

no worries, it may just be a mistake but if it's from a solicitor I'd be more inclined to open it than just return it.

We have had something like that where they have obviously picked a random postcode and then given a house number and stuff has arrived at our house that have never lived here.
