To think suspending parliament is something we should all be worried about

Closing down democracy in the name of democracy. Did people really vote for a far right dictatorship in the referendum? Surely nobody is okay with this?

All well and good, still waiting to hear advantages of Brexit. There aren't any AFAIC

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 28/08/2019 10:34

YANBU. I'm really not comfortable with it. I didn't vote for the govt and the opposition are there for a reason, it's a real blow for democracy.

SansaSnark · 28/08/2019 10:36

Yes, I think we should all be worried. I hope someone is able to prevent this.

It's not standard procedure and it's not appropriate for the current situation.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 28/08/2019 10:43

Anyone who isn't worried is either very naïve or living in a very gilded bubble.

Anyone who cannot see that this is literally how a dictatorship begins needs to give their head a wobble, we should all be very worried!

Cinammoncake · 28/08/2019 10:45

It has also made some remainers flip to brexit out of horror of what parliament are managing to do.

never met one

Whether the mums net collective agrees or not, there are people out there who want Brexit
Nobody disputes this.
Effectively suspending parliament to force through the most extreme and damaging version of this is an abuse of power, it is anti democratic.

Roussette · 28/08/2019 10:46

Yes the opposition are there for a reason and silencing them for six weeks before the most important decision for a very long time is tinpot dictatorship

Tellmetruth4 · 28/08/2019 10:46

If this exact scenario was playing out in South America or Africa we’d be calling it what it is - a coup. The British like to think we’re above all of that type of third world stuff but our ruling class are every bit just as power hungry and nasty as many others, just with posh accents and suits on.

summermadsession · 28/08/2019 10:48

Anyone else feel the whole country are taking part in an episode of Suits?

edwinbear · 28/08/2019 10:52

This is playing Bercrow at his own game and may well bring the EU back to the table.

LillithsFamiliar · 28/08/2019 10:53

Politicians on both sides of the Brexit debate have brought us to this point. If you think power hungry opportunism is the preserve of only one side then you haven't been paying attention.

JuneFromBethesda · 28/08/2019 10:54

I’m so angry I can barely see straight.

I can’t stand Corbyn but I would vote Labour (first time ever) in the next election to kick out our fucking useless Tory MP and ditch this government.

(Many) Remainers wanted a second referendum. This lot want to shut down debate entirely. How is that democracy?

🤬

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 28/08/2019 10:54

So essentially it's an extended recess. Not helpful in terms of Brexit but definitely not helpful for general business as usual work - if you're a school waiting for a decision on additional funding or joining a new academy trust for example, no decision can be taken if it's a ministerial level one. Fantastic.

Cinammoncake · 28/08/2019 11:27

To be fair, even though I loathe Corbyn, he's not trying to close down parliament to force his way of doing things through.

Biologyquestion · 28/08/2019 11:27

YANBU

I hope those that oppose this in parliament do so ferociously and as soon as possible.

lemonyellowtangerine · 28/08/2019 11:51

Nobody is obliged to quietly sit back and accept their rights being taken away and their lives and futures screwed over.

Depressingly there are plenty of people in this country who want the death penalty. That doesn't mean it should ever be brought back, even if they spent thirty years shouting obnoxiously about it.

MPs are supposed to act in our best interests, not engage in popularism and power grabs. They've let all of us down over the last few years.

Mackerz · 29/08/2019 16:16

That was when they suspended the Constitution. They said it would be temporary. There wasn't even any rioting in the streets. People stayed home at night, watching television, looking for some direction. There wasn't even an enemy you could put your finger on.
