To ask your bank recommendations

I'm unhappy with my current bank and looking to switch.
Who do you recommend? I've heard of a few non-highstreet banks that people have recommended on other posts, such as ones that show you where your money is going to help with budgeting. But I can't remember the name, what bank do you love and why?

I have been with First Direct since the early 1990s. Superb customer service and never any issues with them at all. Highly recommend.

Have also had good experience with Nationwide whom I have third party access to my DDs account. Because she can't access banking without help.

My other DD rates Monzo but she's only been with them since February

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 28/08/2019 17:36

Been with First Direct since its inception, can’t see myself ever leaving tbh.

PositiveVibez · 28/08/2019 17:39

This has turned into a bit of a love in for First Direct, but I've also come on tho say First Direct 😂

Their customer service is brilliant and I'm sure if you open an account with them you get £150.

BSJohnson · 28/08/2019 17:41

Erm, FirstDirect 😁

HotDogGuy · 28/08/2019 17:41

I’d 100% recommend Monzo

TheFlis12345 · 28/08/2019 17:49

Metro Bank. So easy to open an account (all done in 20 mins on a Sunday, card printed on the spot in branch etc.) and the nicest, most helpful bank staff I have ever encountered.

I’ve had dealings with Natwest this year, under really difficult circumstances, and they were absolutely amazing. My problem was a really big (but quite rare) one, and they had a specialist department with expertise in that area. I had 24 hour access to these specialists and they went above and beyond in terms of the contract and what I was expecting to help me. It made me really appreciate what the ‘big banks’ can offer over smaller ones, and emphasised the importance to me of choosing for the worst case scenario. I’ve vowed to recommend them to anyone who asks on the basis of my experience.

Nationwide. They have a branch in my town and they are fab.

spanglydangly · 28/08/2019 18:19

Metro back

Babynut1 · 28/08/2019 18:41

I’m with HSBC and never had any issues and find them proactive. They wrote to me to advise me I had ppi and would I like to make a complaint. No other company has done that. They’re friendly and helpful.

I’ve also got a Monzo account as a little everyday spend account and find it great xx

hopelessbusiness · 28/08/2019 18:42

I've never had an issue with TSB...I know they had a few recent IT problems but I wasn't affected. Website and app both really easy to use, branch staff helpful & friendly (not many of them though - but you can deposit and withdraw at the post office)

NisekoWhistler · 28/08/2019 18:45

Starling are fantastic

ChipsAndKetchup · 28/08/2019 18:46

First Direct without a doubt

Raynedance · 28/08/2019 18:51

I'm with first direct and nationwide.

I only stay with nationwide because I understand their banking app.

First direct has been far superior in everything. I had an issue a few years ago, being sahm and nationwide wouldn't help me, it's very much computer says no.

However first direct, spoke to me.... And helped me. As others said all brilliant customer service

WhyBirdStop · 28/08/2019 18:54

I have a first direct account and we also have a joint Halifax reward account the latter for £15 a month (and two regular direct debits) gives us both full AA breakdown cover, mobile phone insurance with low excess, worldwide travel insurance including sports, they also covered me whilst pregnant, and emergency home appliance/boiler cover , we've used all other than the last repeatedly with no issue. It depends what you are looking for, but I would recommend either.

Heratnumber7 · 28/08/2019 19:22

First Direct. Fantastic bank, staffed by people who are always helpful. Always been happy and I was a very early customer.

Ditto. Even though I work for a competitor.

Thecathouse · 28/08/2019 19:29

I hated Halifax so moved over to Santander and the customer service couldn’t have been any better.

I only have a basic account with them - but it has a main card you deposit money into and a top up card that you can transfer spending money to which helps you budget. I transfer what I’m going to spend them leave the main card at home.

You can do direct debits and all the usual banking stuff with it.

It would be great for people with poor credit scores or teenagers / young people as well as those who want something that makes it easy to budget

WhosH00Wh0 · 28/08/2019 19:44

I've had lots of different bank accounts
Look on money saving expert website
Some pay better interest than others or better cash back deals
I have no loyalty to any bank
Switch & ditch for the best deals
