I know this isn't the correct place to post but I hoping someone can help me with universal credit. I have done online chats with different benefit advice companies but getting no where.

I am about to become a full time student and have a primary school ages DD. My course only advices working a max of 8 hours per week which I will only be able to do on the weekends if DM can provide childcare. I will be getting the max maintenance loan but that is it. I have looked at so much information online but can't find anyway of working out a rough guide on what potential help I could get and I'm praying for the wisedom of MN to help me.

Have you looked at entitledto.co.uk? Turn2us.org.uk also have a benefits calculator. I find entitledto to be a bit more accurate

Thanks Hopefulfor2020 I have looked on both but they are so vague about students and just that a full time student with a child can claim and student loan will be taken into account

Try CAB. They're pretty good at things like that. There's a webchat and adviceline if you can't make it in.

Hi OP. Universal credits are a nightmare for students. Tax credits don’t take student loans into account but universal
Credit do even though it’s a loan and has to be paid back. Anyway UC will take into account anything that isn’t a grant. They will also discard the first so many thousand (I don’t have the exact figures sorry). So I am a student and I get £316 a month universal credit. I have one ds (6) and rent a council property. If I wasn’t a student and I was looking for work my total allowance would be around £990 but as they deduct money from uc to take into account my loan I have just over £600 deducted.

I think the figure is 63p is deducted for every pound of ‘income’ (the student loan). I do not work because the first 63p or every pound I earned would be deducted from my UC which means there’s no point.

I do not think this is written clearly, I’ve just come off a nightshift and I’m
Very tired but I hope it makes a little
Bit of sense. You will be entitled to something but be prepared that UC are absolute bastards and may put you on the work scheme. I am a student nurse and I am in uni 5 days a week then on placements for half the year. The first work coach I spoke to tried to put me on the work
Scheme which meant I was to look for full time work!!! Luckily the second person I spoke to had more common sense and took me off that scheme.

Anyway hope this helps (really sorry if it is very confusing!)

How many hours will you be in learning? You may well find that you can work more than 8 hours.

Alittleconfused20 · 28/08/2019 08:20

Remotecontrolling that's really helpful thank you!

Barren I will be in uni for 4 days per week with the 5th day to be used as a study day and even if I didn't occasionally I would still need to pay for before and after school clubs which means my DC would be in them 5 days a week. I can sometimes get my mum to babysit for a day on the weekend if she isnt herself so realistically I will struggle to work more then 8 hours per week (there may be chances I can in which case I will) it will be even more of a struggle when I go onto placements.

There is an allowance before this kicks in if you have children. Mine is £287 and anything I earn AFTER that is reduced by 63p per £1
