AIBU to be peeved with this AirBnB?

Booked a caravan in a lovely quiet caravan park on the South Coast (Devon). £358 for four nights - it’s less than a hotel and equivalent to nearby BnBs. We had trouble booking due to wanting to arrive on a Tuesday / leave on a Saturday. Our five year old twins were desperate to stay in a caravan!

Knew it wasn’t especially fancy from the pics and reviews but it’s a little bit grubby - full of their clutter / books / DVDs / games. No outdoor furniture as advertised. Mattress on double bed is more hard and uncomfortable springs than mattress. Some surfaces dusty / with hairs on. Smells a bit of dog. Crockery needed a clean, some food stuff on cutlery.

Listing said patio furniture was included - turns out this is just three deck chairs. No outside table. And we have to pay on top for Wi-fi, which was advertised as included in the listing.

The site is lovely, really peaceful and the views are incredible. We won’t be inside all that much I suppose but....wish I hadn’t had to clean before we unpacked.

AIBU to complain to the host? Has anyone complained to AirBnB? Did anything happen as a result?

I think I’d take pics and complain. You shouldn’t have to clean before starting to cook etc. You’re paying a decent amount to stay somewhere nice. If the mattress is so bad, how will you sleep?

leafyygreens · 27/08/2019 22:09

airbnb are normally v fair in these sitations- send photos of the dirt etc and you should at least have the cleaning fee waived. If they said wifi was included they can't now charge you for it!

Patio furniture only being 3 chairs is unfortunately subjective, although I think the majority will agree with you Grin. Likewise the home being full of their crap is annoying but not really something you can complain about. Did it have good reviews?

leafyygreens · 27/08/2019 22:12

and yes- I've complained when I stayed in a home like that, there was crap everywhere! Like random chillis mouldering in a bowl with keys. And a knife between the sofa cushions. I had the cleaning fee waived and spoke to a very nice man from airbnb who said he'd relocate me if I wanted (it was a work trip and I was v emotional lol)

Waffles80 · 27/08/2019 22:18

There’s a bag of onions and potatoes in one of the cupboards. Ridiculous. Nick nacks everywhere - on every surface.

I didn’t take pics before I cleaned. How stupid of me!

I’ve messaged the owner to say it’s a shame about the cleaning and she’s said it’s because some maintenance staff from the site have been in to measure up for new flooring. They must be the most beautifully coifed maintenance staff because I keep finding long, blonde hairs.

And thanks. I didn’t think I was being unreadable in being so annoyed.

Yes - reviews were good. One mentioned the mattress so we brought a fleece topper just in case, which helps, but it’s still not as comfy as we’d want.

Definitely not being unreasonable to complain. You should be clear in your complaint to the owner and AIRB&B. Hopefully it will be dealt with but hopefully the issue will be dealt with to your satisfaction.

AlwaysCheddar · 27/08/2019 22:36

Yuk, complain!!

DoomsdayCult · 27/08/2019 22:44

You can complain.
But understand £358 for 4 nights in Devon during the summer holiday high season is a very, very low price. The less than salubrious condition of the caravan is reflected in the price you paid.

In fact, I would have personally steered clear of anywhere with such a low price because it is a red flag for modern day slavery or exploitative labour practices (paying less than NMW) for cleaning and maintenance staff.

Waffles80 · 28/08/2019 08:09

It’s a large caravan park. The instructions say we have to leave it clean. I don’t think the owner even pays a cleaner but just expects the previous holiday makers to leave it clean, so I don’t think that concern is valid in this instance @DoomsdayCult.

I think in this instance you pay for what you get. In high summer season

makingmammaries · 28/08/2019 11:24

Charging on top for wifi is ‘not as described’ and you can certainly get Airbnb to refund you that part. When I rented a place where the air conditioning didn’t work, Airbnb in fact refunded me 50%.

raspberryk · 28/08/2019 11:27

Sounds like our most recent caravan stay in Devon Angry

Waffles80 · 28/08/2019 13:14

Frustrating isn’t it @raspberryk.

There are also NO WINE GLASSES. I despair. Confused

That's an outrage!
We had no cooker and a broken bbq Shock

whattodowith · 28/08/2019 14:20

Honestly some people are shocking. I’d feel ashamed even having a brief visitor in my home if it looked like that never mind charging people to stay in it...

Complain to Air BnB. They can’t charge for WiFi, cheeky bastards.

Watchingthyme · 28/08/2019 15:39

Well that changes everything!!!! Shock

Londonmummy66 · 28/08/2019 15:41

NO WINE GLASSES - well then YANBU and you should get a full refund from AirBnB for that. Grin
