Soho house members....

LilaGrace · 27/08/2019 16:40

Not sure where to post this really, so posting here for traffic....
Are there any members of Soho House here, or friends of members - and if so, do you mind telling me what industry you work in? I know they favour creative industries and positively reject people working in finance, law, banking etc.
I understand you need a nomination from 2 current members, which i have, but not sure about the profession.

Actionhasmagic- my friend has the under 27 membership too. It great isn't it? Does the 50% discount on food on Sundays and Mondays apply only to those with under 27 membership? I thought it was for everyone but maybe not.
Which industry do you work in? Also, have all the people you've referred got in? And have the people you've referred all worked in your industry? I'm really interested in hearing about people outside of creative industries who have got in and particularly how they described the value they could add.

Reading in the Guardian the beautiful people have moved on, too many ordinary folk are members now Grin

WikkiTikkiWoo · 29/08/2019 20:36

One friend.. He's, well, a hippy!! He doesn't have a fixed job, and was invited to join after visiting regularly with a few other eccentric friends of his.

Xenia · 29/08/2019 20:50

My child - advertising sector (or rather head of legal in ad sector)

Sparkletastic · 29/08/2019 20:54

Close family member is a full member and has been for ages. She's in telly. She sponsored a friend - he's in gaming.

mystupidmistake · 29/08/2019 20:59

Never even heard of this!!

KimKardash · 29/08/2019 21:12

I know a CFO who is an avid member so shouldn't be an issue!

behindthescenes · 29/08/2019 21:26

I used to go to Shoreditch house with a friend who was a secondary teacher so not exactly a creative and I always wondered how she had membership. She was very, very glamorous, so I did wonder if that might have played a part! This was over ten years ago though. We used to go straight after school at 3:30 to swim and drink. Bliss.

LilaGrace · 29/08/2019 21:29

Thanks everyone! A really mixed hunch, it seems. But there's no doubt the sponsor is important. Can anyone shed any light on the question about what you need to say when they ask about value you can add if you become a member?

Bunch, not hunch 🙄

Friends seem to go to Soho Farmhouse regularly but aren’t members. Can non-members just stay, or do you need a member to book you in?

LilaGrace · 29/08/2019 22:11

Sometimes non members can stay, but at peak times it's closed to everyone apart from members. At peak times, a member has to actually be there with a non member for them to stay- they can't just make the booking but not be there in person.

Agree that Shoreditch House is the most interesting and does pull a younger crowd. I also like Dean St and Greek St. Discrimination based upon profession has loosened and many lawyers and finteckers are members.

Not to derail your thread but there are so many other private members clubs that are equally as nice or lots better. Annabel’s, 5 Hertford St, Milk and Honey, the Curtain and the Ned are all fabulous.

LilaGrace · 30/08/2019 16:04

Leftie- I know and I've had a look at the other clubs. The main benefit of soho house is the other nationwide/worldwide houses, which the other clubs don't have. I'm sure they're fabulous, though.

I don't know what they ask as my daughter didn't tell me. She has certanly enjoyed it and even been abroad to some of their other places too which has been nice - I tihnk she had a weekend or week in Spain at two other their clubs there. A family member has recently joined the Ned and likes that too - in fact my Soho House daughter was considering the Ned in addition as I think it is easier to join the Ned if you are a soho house member.

LilaGrace · 30/08/2019 17:29

Xenia- a neighbour of mine is a member of the Ned and loves it. But I think it stands alone, doesn't it? Apologies if you already mentioned this, but what industry does your daughter work in?

OP posts:
Xenia · 31/08/2019 09:57

Advertising (the Soho House daughter) - although she is head of legal in the advertising company.

I am not really a clubs person probably because I had always to rush back from work to breastfeed a baby rather than go somewhere to socialise - the downside of 5 children and working full time (although I would rather have the children than the club).... I was once about to join the Reform Club - some members had helped me put on a dinner there for me to be introduced etc but I decided I wouldn't use it. I am just not sociable enough. However for those who like clubs of all types they should certainly seek one that suits them.

LilaGrace · 03/09/2019 16:49

So.... I found out today that you can apply to soho house without a proposer or second proposer. Has anyone done this or does anyone know a person who has done this and been successful? I have 2 proposers as I thought they were mandatory- I'm guessing you're more likely to get in with a member recommendation.

OP posts:
Xenia · 03/09/2019 19:21

Just as a guess I suspect you will do better if you have the recommendaions and it sorts like you have 2 proposers so use those. Someone my daughter knew who was a member put her up for it I think from memory and if you need two people presumably two.

Reallynowdear · 03/09/2019 19:27

Anyone can become a member if the pay the fees.

LilaGrace · 03/09/2019 19:39

Xenia- thank you. I'll definitely use the proposers I have. I was hoping for someone to tell me they'd got in with no proposers, which would have made me feel better about my application!
Really- unfortunately for me, that's not the case.

Eastpoint · 03/09/2019 19:40

It used to be that each club had its own committee that met once a month and new members were discussed at that. I joined one as a founder member, local interesting people were given the opportunity to nominate their friends, thats how I got in. I have co-produced two films but that was simply giving them financial backing rather than having any creative input,

Xenia · 06/09/2019 08:40

[By huge chance I watched a crime programme on Sky yesterday which did a very good portrayal of the police investigation in the murder of a Soho House member lady at the New York place by her boyfriend - who was jailed for the killing (not that this was anything much to do with Soho House other than that was was murdered there. Soho House apparently co-operated very well with police).]

NaturalBornWoman · 06/09/2019 08:51

My son, music industry and step daughter, fashion designer. I love it when they take me, especially the farm and NY.
