To ask for a level choice advice for medicine?

Dd has to pick her a level options tomorrow and is struggling at the moment as she wants to do medicine and so has always said that she’d do biology chemistry and maths with an AS in Spanishbut has started toying with the idea of biology chemistry and history with an AS in maths this morning. She really loves history and unfortunately her school doesn’t offer it as an AS but is sure she wants to study medicine and so doesn’t want to put herself at a disadvantage in applying. Would not having the full maths a level do this? We know the unis say that maths isn’t necessary if have biology and chemistry but we’re wondering if it’s a sort of unwritten preference
Sorry to post on here but looking for the traffic

My heart says history but my head says surely maths, chem, biology must a better bet if she is set on medicine.

My ds didn't do further maths at A level as it wasn't a requirement for his chosen course. He did art as his 4th as he was passionate about it. The top unis wouldn't even look at him because everyone else had further maths.

I'm a doctor (without maths A level Smile). In terms of uni entrance, I agree with PPs saying the grade is more important than the subject.

Could she start all 4 and drop either history or maths if she struggles?

She should pick a subject she is more likely to get an A as a number of offers are AAA. As she won't know for sure which to apply for until she's done the UKCAT and BMAT, it's a safer decision.

DD picked Maths because she was very strong in that subject and indeed got her A* is Maths, but otherwise would have picked something else.

Yes go for the A* subject. My daughter didn’t do maths and still got offers and finished with a high ranking.
I’m thinking back she did Chemistry, Biology, Theology, French, Latin and Music. Theology proved very useful as it had a strong ethics component.

Am another doctor who did biology, chemistry & history (20yrs ago though). You really don’t need a maths a-level for medical school. If she likes Spanish there are some places (not sure how common it is now) you can do language modules as part of medicine (I did German).

I teach A Level history an have an extra responsibility in the Sixth Form. In my experience the third subject makes zero difference to who does and doesn’t get a medicine offer. What matters is that they have Chemistry and Biology and, for most universities, A*AA predictions. Even more critical than that is their UCAT score (we’ve not had many BMAT in the last couple of years but I’d imagine that’s similarly critical).
Our successful medicine applicants in the last few years have included those with History, Geography or Psychology as their third option. By pure coincidence I don’t think any of our successful ones have had Maths in the last few years (although we only send a small number for medicine each year). I don’t think that itself means much but I would say that I have seen some very bright students really struggle with maths, having taken in because they thought they “should”. In my opinion, Maths is a subject that you should really love if you’re going to choose it at A Level.
I’d say do history.

I'm a current medical student. I did a BTEC in Art when I was 17, and a medicine access course later on. A lot of the grads on my course did History or English as a degree and don't even have Biology A Level.

She should do history. She will enjoy it, and pre-clinical medicine is relentlessly scientific with no outlet for her interest in the humanities. Best to let her enjoy A Levels before all that stuff starts.
