Considering buying a caravan

Out eldest child starts school in September and we have been looking at prices of holidays for next summer during the school holidays and I am astounded!! £5,500 for a week half board in Majorca or £1,300 for a week self catering in the UK. I have been looking at caravans for sale today and don't know if that would be a better option while our children are small. Does anyone have any experience good or bad of owning a static caravan please?

Thanks, I wasn't expecting so many replies! I'm a SAHM and DH runs his own business so holiday allowance isn't an issue.
We are looking at cottages on sites where there is a pool etc for the DCs to use and £1300 is the cheapest I can find so far but will keep looking.
It was a static caravan that I was looking at, touring or camping doesn't appeal to us really.
Reading the replies here with DH we have decided not to go for it. We wouldn't want the hassle of renting it when we discussed what that would actually involve and probably wouldn't use it enough to get our money's worth. Back to the holiday hunt!!

Europe is cheaper at end of summer holidays, their schools go back a week before uk. Try eurocamp. Goddess knows what effect brexit will have

My parents have had a terrible experience with a site in Clacton, only brought their caravan last September as a little getaway, have had nothing but trouble the park dont care once they have your money, it was plumped in wrong, the shower leaked into the dining area and caused mould. You go to the office & it takes months to get anything repaired. Sadly we lost my Dad suddenly I'm June & my Mum wants to sell it,she has been offered 12000.00 for the park to buy it back. These Companies are nothing but con artist!!! Really do your research and if you do go to purchase one ask to take the paperwork and read through it before you sign anything. If we sell the van privately the site take 15% it's just like burning your hard earnt money!!! Personally I would never buy one...

We have one. We rent it out for most of the summer though. Just spent our first weekend of the year in it (apart from beginning of the year).

So ours has paid for itself. Defeats the object with you though as you want to be there.
