Very close colleague is getting married abroad - worked very closely with him for years so I'd say we're also good friends, I'm his line manager at work too. How much would you give as a gift? I'm going to the wedding in Spain if that makes a difference.

I’d say £100 but you give absolutely no indication of your personal fortunes.

coffeeforone · 26/08/2019 15:04

Thanks - that's actually the figure I had in mind, i first thought £50 but that seems too little and other figures don't seem 'round' enough! it would be cash.

They've officially said they don't want gifts or cash but I know they're secretly hoping for cash contributions to their honeymoon spending!

I would have said £50 per person but I hate giving money.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 26/08/2019 15:06

I think if you're expected to go to a wedding abroad you shouldn't be expected to provide a present.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 26/08/2019 15:23

I'd say £100 too. Weddings are VERY important, once in a lifetime (usually) occasions and should be marked accordingly.

Atlasta · 26/08/2019 15:27

I'd say £100

summertime06 · 26/08/2019 15:30

I usually do £50 for friends etc. £100 for family.

Yeahnahyeah1 · 26/08/2019 15:34

I would normally say £100 but you’re paying to travel for his wedding and as such, I would go for £50.

EmeraldShamrock · 26/08/2019 15:37

I agree a 100. It is a respectable amount but not to lavish.
Enjoy the wedding.

This is my approach too.

PurBal · 26/08/2019 15:42

£100 if we go as a couple

IAskTooManyQuestions · 26/08/2019 15:50

How long is a piece of string?

we're also good friends, I'm his line manager at work too.

Are you his team leader in Morrisons or the CEO of Barclays? it would make all the difference as to my answer.

If you are laying out for travelling aboard, and they aren't footing the bill, are you actually expected to buy a present on top of flights, hotel, outfits etc ?

Are you going alone or as a couple? £100 minimum.

coffeeforone · 26/08/2019 16:56

I'm going alone. DH and kids were invited though. I'm a manager of a small team in a smallish professional services firm.
