To insist on hotel or short term rental

Moving house in next few weeks.
It needs a wall knocking down, new kitchen, boiler, flooring and decorating before we move in. Dh adamant we can do majority in two weeks. Whist work being done we can stay with family which is very kind of them but we do clash and im very anxious about having to live there for 2 weeks. Seen friends the other day who’ve been doing similar work and they laughed at our 2 week plan saying it would be more like 2 months 😩
Dh is a Trade’s and has people lined up but I’m worried about timescale now so should I insist we look for another option rather than staying with family?

2 weeks! Ha!!!

Good luck being in for Xmas - paying work will soon take priority for him. I’d look for options too.

MollyButton · 26/08/2019 09:24

I would!

Sorry but most Trades people's families I know often live for longer than normal with stuff "not finished" as paying work comes in. And when my kitchen got done, we were a convenient base so often had all of the "spare" trades in my house. But although it got completed quickly, there were times that there were too many people around (12 men one morning), and they couldn't really do much because they'd get in each others way.

Why don’t you stay with friends and he can stay with family?

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 26/08/2019 09:27

It could take two weeks if you have a separate trailer for each job and they all start at the same time, and miraculously manage to not get in each other’s way.

NotSureAtAllReally · 26/08/2019 09:27

Sorry he has a trade but isn’t a self employed trade man - management for a firm.
We have done two refurbs before but didn’t have 2 dcs then so did bit by bit this is a different beast altogether 🙈

Have you got children? If not I'd be moving in whilst the work is going on.

If not, have you got plenty of spare cash? Short term lets are not cheap.

HandsOffMyRights · 26/08/2019 09:30

If you can afford it I'd look at the short term let/Hotel. Having moved somewhere that seemingly only needed "a bit" of TLC I can assure you we were upside down for months.

NoBaggyPants · 26/08/2019 09:30

Posted at same time. Can you easily afford a short term let?

NotSureAtAllReally · 26/08/2019 09:35

There is only one short term that would be suitable and would be affordable for a couple of months. Hotel wise would be stretch but could manage it if needed.

It’s my family we’d be staying with which would help with kids but I don’t think I’d last a week never mind several weeks.

AirBnB, short term let or being done for manslaughter after you bury your mother under the patio? Refurb is always stressful, do what you can to reduce the stress and rent somewhere.

IAmALazyArse · 26/08/2019 09:43

I second the PP. Haha at 2 weeks.
Mine was supposed to take 4. Ha.
Short term rental would be the best imho.

Ponoka7 · 26/08/2019 09:46

I was in a rented house and had similar work done, but with the addition of doir frames and other things. There was found to be dangerous damp/mould.

Because my LL had to pay my accommodation costs and extra expenses (HA, I'd been to EH) it was done within two weeks.

It's when you get messed about by builders, or they have to work around someone living there, it takes longer.

So don't discount your DH's plan of two weeks.

Could you stay with family for a week and then, you'll know about any delays or complications and go with the rental option?

bigbluebus · 26/08/2019 09:48

One of our neighbours had 1 week to get central heating fitted, new kitchen and utility, new bathroom and wood floor fitted through hall, living room dining room as they had to move out of rental property on a specific date. I didn't think they would do it - but they did. They used local tradesmen too - didn't do it themselves. So if you have the right people I guess your challenge is achievable.
