To avoid houses with pets??

My dd and ds have flea bites on arms and legs, we have no pets but they have visited family in the past week who have cats and dogs. I don't want them visiting either anymore, well at least for a few weeks. Am I unreasonable??? Dh thinks I am.

Our old cat had fleas years ago and ds still has the scars. Dd, ds and I seem to get bitten while dh doesn't get any. It was a nightmare to get rid of the fleas but eventually we did. Then we moved and had to rehome our cat so we've been pet free for two years and bite free.

I know sometimes fleas can't be helped, and I know family are treating the pets and houses but I don't want to put my children at risk of being bitten.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable.

I often thought fleas were a pest. From what I know they are hard to get rid of and keep out your home.

It’s not the end of the world but still I wouldn’t want my kids bringing fleas home.

YANBU in my opinion

Why would that be unreasonable?

BoomyBooms · 25/08/2019 17:41

My dog is 6 and we've only suspected fleas once in his life, which we immediately treated. Good owners should keep their pets flea-free so if you know the family I think it's an unreasonable rule.

Although I have been told that dog fleas and cat fleas are very different- something to do with dog fleas not surviving off the dog so very easy to eradicate, whereas cat fleas are the ones that get everywhere and can live off the cat and carry on biting...

Are you 100% sure the bites are from the houses you visited? I had to remove a flea from my daughter after playing in long grass not so long ago so I wouldn't jump to conclusions!

U2HasTheEdge · 25/08/2019 17:45

You aren't avoiding homes with pets forever, just whilst they have fleas in the house? I don't know why your husband would find that unreasonable? I have a daughter who everything that bites will bite her. She ends up scarring too.

Blitzcreek · 25/08/2019 17:46

@aquietlifeplease while I agree about not jumping to conclusions the first bite dd got was while at one of these houses and I was then told fleas had been seen on the pet.

I also know the other house don't treat all the animals

I would love to be wrong about where the fleas come from, believe me as these are close family members.

I've sprayed my house top to bottom with indorex just in case they were brought back with them.

YANBU for avoiding houses with fleas. YABU for avoiding houses with pets. My animals are given a preventative flea treatment every three months without fail (and a wormer every month)

I suspect all houses with pest have fleas at some point. However if the pets and house have been treated then the fleas don't last long and don't get a chance to breed.

I also suspect many non pet houses have had a flea or three in them. Them come in in clothes etc from the fields. Again, without an animal host their lifecycle is disrupted so they never breed.

In both cases they are often gone before they are spotted.
