To ask your pre holiday house preps?

Can I ask what you do to prepare your house for holiday?
My DH thinks I’m strange but I like all the beds changed, bins emptied, house cleaned generally etc.
I like to be the last one out of the house so I can put toilet cleaner down the toilets and plump my sofas for the 5 days we are away.

To me this is normal but he thinks I’m strange!
Aibu to ask what you do?

Ps none of us are packed Confused

I do the same - love coming back to a clean, tidy house. We either go away with caravan or to family owned villa so I also do most of our holiday washing while away leaving very little to do when we get back - somehow hanging washing up in the glorious sunshine doesn’t seem as much of a chore!

Geschwister4 · 25/08/2019 10:00

I don't do any of that, except empty the bins. I do spend a lot of time making sure my garden is holiday proof, water the plants , make sure the vulnerable ones in pots are moved to the patio so that my neighbour knows to water them. I am more worried about coming home to a dead garden than an untidy house!

Strugglingtodomybest · 25/08/2019 10:03

We have dog sitters come to stay, so as well as cleaning the house thoroughly (not something that happens regularly!), we also go on a repair mission too.

It's probably a good job we have sitters else the house would probably have collapsed around us by now Wink

Inforthelonghaul · 25/08/2019 10:06

Bathrooms all cleaned, bleach down toilets just before we leave. Rest of house tidy, vacuumed and dusted. Beds changed and fridge emptied of anything that will go off.

There is nothing better than coming home to a lovely clean house.

RiftGibbon · 25/08/2019 10:09

I like to have the place tidy, the beds freshly made, clean towels out and something quick for dinner ready in the freezer.

Woobeedoo · 25/08/2019 10:10

I get all the laundry done, dried and put away. Clean towels, clean bedding the day before. Bins emptied, vacuum throughout, clean bathroom and kitchen. On the morning of leaving I get all washing up done and put away, draining board scrubbed, bleach down toilet and Zoflora in kitchen washing up bowl. No wonder I fall asleep early on the first night of every holiday, bloody knackered!

FinallyHere · 25/08/2019 10:13

One of the joys of later life and it just being us in the house, is that we like PPs keep the cleaners on in our hols. Gives them a chance to deep clean without us in the way

We leave the sheets in the washing machine come back to find them washed and ironed and the bed made up again.

Fridge emptied of anything that would go off and restocked with fresh milk, fresh fruit and eggs etc

Bliss.

Purplestorm83 · 25/08/2019 10:14

What do you all do about the laundry though? We are going away tomorrow and I am doing the last load of laundry now - and I am irrationally irritated about what will happen to anything that gets dirty from now on lol. I will come home to a manky baby grow from tonight and my daughter’s pjs which will probably have honey or jam on them 😧

7yo7yo · 25/08/2019 10:16

@Purplestorm83 I would hand wash and put outside to dry and bring in before I leave.
I’m not going to lie I will use the tumble dryer even if the weather is nice, to make sure the laundry is done.

ThighThighOfthigh · 25/08/2019 10:21

Purple if you do laundry on holiday you could just take it with you. You'd use the babygro and PJs on holiday anyway.

Steredent is a great idea, in the bowl or cistern?

theWarOnPeace · 25/08/2019 10:23

For quite a few holidays, we’ve gone via the kids pickup at school.

I make them a packed dinner type thing, that I put in a cool bag in the fridge. That’s then the only thing perishable in the house, while I empty everything else out into either bin or freezer.

The evening before holiday I get the children to fill their little bags with the toys they must have, the bag is about the size of a large freezer bag so it’s usually some lego and a couple of action figure type things. The little bag then goes in with their clothes, so not to be brought out on the journey. They also choose books, which go in my carry on bag so they can read while travelling. They all have a backpack each and I find it easier to pack in that way, as everyone’s things are separated and don’t become a mass of stuff. It also stops me from overpacking as they won’t be able to carry more than they actually need.

For years I scrubbed the house from top to bottom and tidied like mad. Now we have a cleaner that comes while we’re away, I’ve substituted the cleaning part with having a massive clear-out. The anxiety about getting it clean has been replaced with anxiety about making sure there’s no excess crap that needs to go. I clear out every cupboard and have bags and bags for charity/recycling/bin over the course of days. It freaks me out how much stuff accumulates, despite me not being a big spender or particularly materialistic - but it just piles up. I knacker myself clearing before holiday, but it’s worth it to come back to almost another holiday. Clear house, clean bedding, no junk under the kids beds or old food in the cupboards.

I don’t know why I feel the need to always combine those two quite stressful things ie spring clean/clear-out plus holiday prep, but I just always do! This year we were all in need of new bedding. I’d got some in sales etc but kept it back for when we came back from holiday. It was so lovely coming home to new bedding, the kids loved theirs and were excited to get in bed. So was I!

I always put in one of those clear recycling bags into each person’s backpacks for dirty clothes. When we get home, the clear bags go straight by the washing machine, and the actual backpacks go straight back into the cupboard so no bags lingering around. If there’s a washing machine on holiday then I use it. It doesn’t make it feel like less of a holiday to me at all, and I love not carrying back tonnes of filthy clothes.

I always put zoflora down the plug hole before going off, and spray everything with fabreeze. I don’t normally like anything chemical-y, but figure we won’t be in there for a while so it’ll kill of smells without choking us all.

I ask the cleaner to turn and hoover all the mattresses too. I used to always do that before going away myself. Another thing I would do is make all the beds up fresh and then drape flat sheets over the top covering it all to protect from dust.

I get a food shop order for delivery while we’re away, but kind of on the way back, and ask my mum or the cleaner to receive it. If not possible, I order it for the morning after we get home and just grab bread and milk on the way home. It’s extra nice because everything’s then being put away into cleared out and clean cupboards and fridge. It’s nice having a food order you can add to while you’re away especially if you’ve missed certain foods, like Asian countries I really miss bread and cheese so order loads when we’re back, or Germany or Netherlands we were desperate for light and fresh salads because it’s quite heavy the food there. I remember being due to come back from Germany and going into my food order and removing sausages. I don’t think we ate pork for months after being stuffed with sausages over there!

theWarOnPeace · 25/08/2019 10:26

Purple anything needing washing before we’ve left I put on either a 15 or 30 minute eco wash and then hang on hangers in the bathroom to dry with the window locked but ajar.

BrunettesDoItBetter · 25/08/2019 10:33

I do most things mentioned, including making sure I have english money in the house for a takeaway the day we come back and have no food in(and cba to go cash machine)

NaomiFromMilkShake · 25/08/2019 10:36

ThighThighOfthigh

Steradent, in both,as the teens would say, I am so extra. Grin

twirlypoo · 25/08/2019 10:45

If any of you are on Instagram check out “fromgreatbeginnings” stories in highlights on her pre-holiday clean. She’s like an Australian Mrs hinch - but younger and less annoying. It was a revelation to me as I leave the house looking as if it’s been burgled 😬😂

burnoutbabe · 25/08/2019 10:55

I'd assume everyone empty bins and washed up before going away else it round smell!
We'll have cleaner here during time away so place will be left tidy as usual for her but I won't be doing any cleaning beyond ensuring toilet is acceptable.
Will strip beds and remake and wash that before we go though we'll then fall into a clean bed after a 12 hour overnight flight and make dirty again lol!

hittheroadjack1 · 25/08/2019 10:57

Clear fridge, 2L juice in fridge, Hoover house change the bedsheets the morning we go so we have clean ones when we get back.

Peanutbutterforever · 25/08/2019 11:04

I have found my people!

We travel pretty light, so everything is washed and put away a few hours after we return too.

TyrionsNextWife · 25/08/2019 11:06

I fill an ice cube tray with milk and freeze it so I can have a cup of tea as soon as I get home, without having to go to the shop.

I always leave the house spotless as well so the first day home isn’t spent cleaning.

bluebeck · 25/08/2019 11:07

Bloody hell some of you are crazy.

Empty the bins.

Lock the doors.

Leave.

theWarOnPeace · 25/08/2019 11:07

have english money in the house for a takeaway the day we come back

See that’s why I get the shopping delivered for when we’re back. We’ve always spent so much on convenience while we’re away, that I can’t bear to fork out for a takeaway once we’re home. I get frozen pizzas and stuff so I’m not really doing anything, but also not feeling like I’ve been robbed 😅

theWarOnPeace · 25/08/2019 11:09

bluebeck

No no no. You’re crazy! How else does anyone achieve the back from holiday organised feeling? We must frantically organise and clean, in order to get home and not be depressed about no longer being on holiday.

nowifi · 25/08/2019 11:10

I remember when we went away with my in laws, pre-kids, they were horrified I left loads of washing up in the sink Grin must be an age thing!

bluebeck · 25/08/2019 11:11

War

I get the feeling, but my top tip is that as soon as you get back, you book another holiday Grin

Maybe I think like this because I am really scarily organised all the time, so there isn't really anything extra/additional I would need to do?

milliefiori · 25/08/2019 11:13

Same here. DC think I'm mad because I need to blitz the house before a holiday and change all towels and bedding. I just love walking back to a clean, sweet smelling house. It's so welcoming.
