To ask about online grocery shopping (posting for traffic)

I usually shop at Lidl for pretty much everything expect the odd branded item (that I can't sneak past the kids!). Food, toiletries, cleaning items etc...

This week I have a lot on and I'm going to struggle to get to do a big shop. So, I thought I would try online. I've done so in the past but I've never been sure about value for money.

Who, in your opinion, offers the best value for money with online groceries?

If you've not used online before shop around and see what offers you can get. Used to be able to get a good discount in first shop.

I think it depends on what you think of the supermarkets generally. Personally I don't use asda they are crap at subs and I do t like much if their own brand so it's expensive. I use tesco because there is a good big shop near us so they have a good variety online (remember all except morrisons/ocado are delivered from a local store and its stock so if your nearest is a small store variety online will be limited.).

I have used sainsburys too they are OK.
Ocado used to be good as less subs and they used waitrose own brand not sure what their pricing is like now. Morrissons also reasonable.

summersherewishiwasnt · 24/08/2019 23:07

Open the shopping apps and compare, tesco, sainsbury for instance. The way I save is to not get drawn in to all the impulse “offers”.

EleanorReally · 25/08/2019 10:10

I like Asda, they dont bombard with Ideas, unlike Tesco, thus I spend less.
make the list before you log on

iloveredwine · 25/08/2019 10:11

I like asda. never have an issue with substitute products really and they email you before delivery to let you know if any change.

IVEgottheDECAF · 25/08/2019 10:14

I think it depends on your area re substitutions. If i get asda i get lots of subs, my friends comes from a different store and she hardly gets any

Sainsbury’s have a big discount on first shop

We do online with Morrison’s and Tesco. Tesco is v good value now thanks to the budget ranges they’ve introduced like cream fields and miss mollys

Babooshkar · 25/08/2019 10:16

Ocado all the way - the app is the best one of all I’ve tried and I’ve tried all the big ones except Morrison’s. They have the best range, longest use by dates and usually not many subs and when they are, they actually seem to use logic in the decision!

That said, I’ve found Sainsbury’s to be the best value BUT use-by dates are often shite.

SilverySurfer · 25/08/2019 10:38

I've used Tesco home deliveries for years. Without exception their drivers are pleasant and helpful and you can choose if you want unavailable items replaced with an alternative or not.

A lot of people rate Ocado but when I placed my first order they didn't turn up and their customer service was useless/non existent so Iwent back to Tesco.

DerbyshireGirly · 25/08/2019 10:41

Ocado normally do a 30% off code for your first order (first three if you find a really decent code). Really good range and don't find it particularly expensive.

Nanasueathome · 25/08/2019 10:47

Ocado price match to Tesco too so if your shop would have been cheaper in Tesco then you get a voucher for the amount off your next shop
I use Ocado but meal plan around their offers and find them really good value and worthwhile

juls1888 · 25/08/2019 10:48

Sainsbury's do something like £20 off your first order and then you usually get a couple of freebies a week under the "discover" tab. They do great offers and their mid-week delivery charges are usually only a pound or so. I virtually never have substitutions which was never the case with Asda and Tesco, I would have at least half a dozen a week with them. They then load on recurring discounts like £18 off an £80 spend which I usually spend anyway so that's great too, and you collect and can spend Nectar points with them too.

avocadotofu · 25/08/2019 10:53

I like Ocado best and there will be discount codes around if it's the first time you've used it.

Ginmel · 25/08/2019 11:01

Ocado Customer Service is terrible. They and Waitrose will end their agreement in September and Ocado will be with Marks. Ocado brand products are available but the fruit and vegetables aren't good and I don't want to pay Marks and Spencer prices either.

Morrisons quality and service is average at best. The advantage of these two is that items are picked from warehouses not supermarkets so a better chance of stock being in.

Now I use Waitrose and although their deliveries are currently from shops they are moving to warehouses after Waitrose split from Ocado in September.

Pintsizedblondie197 · 25/08/2019 11:11

Just annoyed with Ocado, the 30% off doesn't cover household stuff such as pet food so the discount isn't as good as it looks.

Pintsizedblondie197 · 25/08/2019 11:12

A note, not annoyed!

merlotqueen · 25/08/2019 13:19

Check out MySupermarket, it compares all the supermarkets though you can't always get exact same items but near enough to see which is cheapest. ASDA is always cheapest for me and it is very easy to get a delivery slot. Tesco is hard to get a slot and delivery is expensive,

I prefer Sainsbury's, mainly as I grew up shopping in Sainsbury's.

mindutopia · 25/08/2019 13:35

Best value is probably Asda, but I use Tesco as that’s where we normally shop (so Asda or Lidl or anything else here).
