Is it too be good to be true? eBay is confusing me

So, how does eBay work? Who are these ebayers?!
I'm looking at some winter shoes for my son that RRP £60 and someone is selling them on eBay for £35. Brand new, boxed. She has 5 pairs in different sizes and styles by the same brand. I'm suspicious. How does someone come by semi expensive shoes like this? I could really do with the money savings but can't be arsed with faff if they are duffers

Probably stolen.

dollydaydream114 · 24/08/2019 20:40

If they’re a current style, they will be either stolen or fake. Probably stolen.

BertieBotts · 24/08/2019 20:41

Counterfeits most likely.

user1471449295 · 24/08/2019 20:42

Counterfeit or stolen

SavoyCabbage · 24/08/2019 20:44

There is a chance she lives near an outlet and buys them cheap but eBay is full of people ripping each other off now.

huntinghighandlow · 24/08/2019 20:45

It is a private seller? If she's a uk business seller she wouldn't risk selling fakes or stolen one surely ?

raspberryk · 24/08/2019 20:47

Might be old stock from independent footwear shop

TheTrollFairy · 24/08/2019 20:49

Send us the link and we’ll (or item number) and we can look for anything obvious that we can see!

brighteyeowl17 · 24/08/2019 20:52

If they have multiple in different sizes stolen or counterfeit. One pair maybe could just be selling on.

AwkwardAsAllGetout · 24/08/2019 20:53

I’ve seen this before on MN, people assuming anything BNWT is stolen. Bizarre. Perhaps she lived near the factory shop, maybe it’s old stock. Around here the boot sales are full of Monsoon and Cath Kidston, because the factories are nearby and presumably the staff are selling stuff on they’ve bought at the factory outlet. Another local charity shop has a deal with John Lewis to sell their customer returns and ex display pieces. It’s never fake. Ebay offers great protection as a buyer anyway so you’ve got nothing to lose by buying them.

Gingerkittykat · 24/08/2019 20:54

Possibly buy end of line or seconds. I buy a lot of shoes online as I need specialist ones which cost a fortune, you can get good bargains but normally in odd sizes and colours.

What is their feedback record like?

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 24/08/2019 21:12

I know a few people who sell footwear on eBay. All honest, all registered for tax and all sell genuine goods. There are all sorts of reasons why the shoes might be cheaper, but it does pay to check out feedback and I try to only buy from business sellers (compulsory 30 days returns in most cases).
The only time I've sold footwear, I bought it mail order and by the time I remembered I was supposed to return it, the returns period had passed, so I sold it for what I could get. There isn't always a con involved on eBay.

chocorabbit · 24/08/2019 21:22

Like pp have said they could be genuine. I have bought good shoes before from registered business sellers for just above half the price or even less.

TypicalMeBreakMyTypicalRules · 24/08/2019 21:30

Thank you so much for your responses.
So, they are bobux shoes and the distribution centre is near Northampton where my mum lives. They donate shoes to a local charity shop (without boxes). The seller lives in Frome, so unlikely to have chanced upon the charity shop miles away. Bobux don't have an outlet as far as I work out. She has five pairs of different shoes for sale. Private seller with 100% reviews, 227 since 2008. Only selling these new shoes, nothing else, at the moment.

I have in the past sold hundreds and hundreds of items of new with tags clothing on eBay. All bought at auction, ends of lines from simply be, Littlewoods, Very, jacamo etc. Occasionally I had a chancer trying to claim it was fake. Every single one of them backed down when I said I had all the auction receipts and would send them to eBay.

EmpressJewel · 24/08/2019 22:16

I buy quite a bit from eBay and haven't had any major problems. Over the years, I've had some great bargains.... the items I've bought are often seconds or old stock.

I've bought a couple high ticket items (£50+) and did my due diligence before parting with my hard earned cash. The types of things I look out for include;

Pictures of the item being sold - make sure it's of the actual item and not a stock photo.

The item description - read it carefully a couple of times. Look for wording that can be open to interpretation.

The sellers history - feedback review, have they sold similar items before, how frequently they are selling in eBay.

Returns policy.

Sellers location - I will only go for a UK based seller if buying a higher ticket item.

What similar items are being sold for.

I will also google to see whether it's a brand that is often faked and also how to spot a fake.

raspberryk · 24/08/2019 23:45

I highly doubt bobux get copied, they're only well know if you frequent independent kids shoe shops.

Thehop · 24/08/2019 23:49

They won’t be fake.

I’ve old a few pairs of bobux on. I buy in the sale and often misjudge sizes.

I’d buy them, you’re covered with PayPal.

TypicalMeBreakMyTypicalRules · 25/08/2019 06:49

I love MN, thank you so much for your replies and thank you EmpressJewel for those specific points. Im gonna go crazy and buy them Wink

@Twofurrycatsagain

I'm curious, did you make money doing that? Where are the auctions, can anyone go?

In regards op, alot of shop second shoes/display models are on eBay.

Twofurrycatsagain · 27/08/2019 22:07

@Solonelywastheballard
Yes but clothing was a lot more graft than other items we sold on eBay. The returns rate on clothes is higher than a lot of other things. Coats and dresses were the best. Trousers (except jeans) could be a nightmare and I would never sell knee high boots again. If a customer is honest and says it doesn't fit or they didn't like it they pay to send it back but you lose the cost of sending it. If they're not so honest and try for not as described you have to pay to get it back . Too be fair eBay generally sided with us as we were meticulous in photography and description and were selling so much.
It was also better to get a lot of the same item in different sizes - easier to list.
As to finding stock ibidder and sign up for alerts. You've to be careful though as sometimes 'new' items were returns. Always better to go and check it out before bidding.
