Not marking a friends 40th

Turned 40 last week. I have a couple of lovely friends who have sent cards and clubbed together for a gift which is lovely. Aibu to have thought friends who live nearby and who I regularly see would have sent a card? I acknowledge their birthdays and give a gift even if just some flowers. Seems my 40th has gone unmarked.

I could say so much about this but won't, except for this:
birthdays are not a measure of how much people care about you. Judge your friends by how much they support you when the chips are down, like really down. That's all that matters.

That’s really crap, OP, it’s happened to me and not for a big birthday, and I was so upset.
Later I came to realise that nobody knew they were important enough that I’d need them on my birthday, they all thought I’d be celebrating with someone else.
Still stings. Not nice.
Belated happy birthday OP

I didn’t plan a party for my birthday as being in the middle of August most people were going to be away. So I went on holiday with my family and that’s what I wanted to do. I’ve hosted several parties in the last few years including my husbands 40th, housewarmings, a christening etc. And didn’t want to organise yet another.
Giving cards might not be your thing but when I give a card or gift I’m showing that person that they mean something to me or that I’m thinking of them.

Nothing would ever happen for my birthday if I didn't arrange it. Perhaps throw a party! Or a 'come for a drink' evening?

I worked on my 40th birthday. I still havent marked it. I'm 42 in 3.5 weeks.

It's just a number and just a day.

Lots of people don't even celebrate their own birthdays as an adult, let alone other people's. I have only received carda or gifts if I hold a party or event and people are told what it is to celebrate. Even then I was surprised. I am 38 and generally only get a card from my mum, dad, husband and one aunt. Even those are mostly because it can be stuck in with a xmas card.

If you had a few friends do something soeciL for you, enjoy it. Be happy that they thought about you. Don't linger on who didn't make that effort, because likely it was nothing personal at all. They may even have been trying not to mention it in case you were sensitive about the number...

Happy birthday. Hope the next 40 are better than the first.

I'm not at all a birthday card-sender, I send hand-written thank you notes and 'you'll get through this' notes but that's about it.

I just don't understand them.
