to throw out everything I own in polyester?

Had an awful sweaty day yesterday that left me damp and stinky. Polyester blouse, trousers and blazer. I tend to buy second hand and never take notice of materials but slipping into a cotton dress when I got home was sooooo nice.

AIBU to throw out all the polyester, or at least put it away till winter?

Don't throw it away that is wasteful.

  1. Put the polyester away until winter
  2. De-clutter and get rid of polyester things that are looking tatty, or dont fit well
3.In future look at labels and select non polyester stuff
GREATAUNT1 · 24/08/2019 07:58

True, but it never creases does it? I bought a load of cotton & viscose dresses in the sale from Debenhams & Next for my holz, they were crease very badly when I in packed. Can’t have it all.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 24/08/2019 07:58

Well I wouldn't bin it, I would charity shop it and hope I didn't rebuy it by accident :p

@GREATAUNT1 yes I currently never iron, but cotton shirts would need inediate hanging or ironing!

i try very hard to check the labels, squinting closely, and avoid avoid polyester
might be ok later in the year op

FaithInfinity · 24/08/2019 08:02

I’ve stopped buying polyester. I had a top in a gorgeous blue colour. Every time I wore it I had sweat patches within an hour Envy (not envoy). I’ll buy a blend but I’ve charity shopped all the cheap pure polyester clothes I had because it never looks (or smells!) great on me.

chasingseagulls · 24/08/2019 08:05

what Sunshineglitterandbubbles said.

Also remember that we don't actually have that many really hot days in this country, it's just when we do it can be difficult to cope because we don't have the a/c and cool buildings regularly hot countries do. Plus, and not saying this is you, in hot countries locals avoid the sun and stay in shade, here everyone wants to bask in it as because we don't know how long it will last!

Our spring and autumn can be really mild, and possibly perfect days for your outfit. It's September in a week or so don't forget.

EleanorReally · 24/08/2019 09:17

The problem is offices are often over heated in the winter, so polyester still too hot perhaps

ForalltheSaints · 24/08/2019 09:19

Don't throw it away, if you don't want it wash and give to charity.

Dodie66 · 24/08/2019 09:24

I buy tops and trousers that are a mix of polyester and cotton and don’t get sweaty at all in them. Easy to care for too
I hate polyester on its own. Like you said too sweaty.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 24/08/2019 11:49

@EleanorReally yes plus I walk to work so get hot that way too.

I'm not having much luck finding washable non polyester trousers and jackets so far :(

Moths, ironing and shrinkage.

Three words that mean I put up with cheap synthetic clothes.

Goldenphoenix · 24/08/2019 12:52

Go for it! I tend to buy second hand too and get some lovely cotton, linen and silk tops from ebay or charity shops. Makes me feel much cooler and fresher.

Azeema · 24/08/2019 12:54

Polyester has microplastics. Very bad for planet. I buy only natural fabrics, and yes they are inncharity shops a lot.

HouseworkAvoider10 · 24/08/2019 13:19

I hate polyester and avoid it.

Is viscose the same thing?

ILikeyourHairyHands · 24/08/2019 13:38

I have no synthetics in my wardrobe woth the exception of a few ponte skirts and dresses which hang really wwell and some Joseph gabardine leggings.

But yes to moths and ironing! Ironing probably takes and hour a week and moths are just a problem you have to keep on top of (sadly they fo seem to prefer more expensive fabrics, cashmere, knitted silk and worsted wool seem to be their favourites).

I do think natural fabrics look better by and large, and are much more adaptable for the variable British climate!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 24/08/2019 13:43

Viscose is a plant-based manmade fibre which can be made with plants such as bamboo or soy, it's a highly industrialised process but less sweaty than polyester Household, some are excellent, some are terrible (I'm looking at you Whistles).

PeoplesFrontOfJudith · 24/08/2019 13:50

I still avoid viscose as it makes me sweaty as well, so unfair. But yes to making an effort to cutting down polyester for the environment.

I don’t find cotton that bad for creasing but then I don’t own a tumble dryer. Shirts get hung up to dry on a hanger and everything else gets a good shake and either on a clothes horse or washing line. Never look creased. I never iron, life’s too short Grin

LivingDeadGirlUK · 24/08/2019 14:55

oh god moths! do you have those awful smelling moth balls in your draws?

OP posts:
Jinxii · 24/08/2019 15:00

I do not buy anything made of polyester no matter how much I like the item, it's awful! I only have items made of natural, breathable fabrics (cotton, wool, silk). It is true polyester doesn't require much ironing, but I have a portable travel steamer in my bedroom and usually give whatever I'm wearing for the day a quick steam which takes about 90 seconds.

Re moths, I have cedar wood blocks in my wardrobe and everything expensive or cashmere goes in a zippable Mini storage box that's absolutely stuffed with cedar wood. It's a moth Fort Knox.

Jinxii · 24/08/2019 15:00

Muji not Mini!
