Swearing

Iwasatglastothisyear · 23/08/2019 18:04

Do people really need to swear to get their point across?
Is it me or does anyone else suddenly lose all hope of a reasonable discussion, when someone replies swearing?
I swear (probably far too much) but time and a place and all that or am I just being unreasonable?

Fuck knows.

bloated1977 · 23/08/2019 18:09

I haven't got a fucking clue Grin

VikVal · 23/08/2019 18:13

YABU...off you fuck!
No but seriously, yes there is a time and place but I think a lot of the time it's subjective to many people. I'm a Bermondsey girl, so it comes with the growing up in that environment...but I still mind what I say and don't swear at work...often. Some people can't help it, even in typing, it just comes naturally I'm afraid.

Aquamarine1029 · 23/08/2019 18:14

I fucking love to swear. It's wonderfully therapeutic. However, I do not swear outside of my home when in public because that's just crass. My husband and I will swear a blue streak at home and giggle like school children at how ridiculous we sound. Grin

An appropriately used expletive adds much to a reasonable discussion.

YABU.

KatherineJaneway · 23/08/2019 18:16

I swear if I stub my toe or silently swear if I am pissed off but I tend not to swear out loud in public.

I once stood in a queue with a woman who couldn't finish a sentence without at least one f word in it. I felt sorry for her toddler.

AmIThough · 23/08/2019 18:17

An appropriately used expletive adds fuck loads to a reasonable discussion.

Sorry @JacquesHammer Wink

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 23/08/2019 18:17

but time and a place and all that

What is the time and where is the place please?

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 23/08/2019 18:19

Well buggered if I know

JacquesHammer · 23/08/2019 18:20

Grin

I almost went for that. Then knew the OP would do the whole “see, not one of you is making a reasonable point”. So I went expletive free AND told her she was UR

JacquesHammer · 23/08/2019 18:20

What is the time and where is the place please?

I’m told 8.16pm in Basingstoke

LakieLady · 23/08/2019 18:22

I fucking love a good swear, and am lucky enough to work in a very sweary office where no-one minds.

I'm afraid I don't get why some people get so uptight about it, swear words are only words. But then I grew up in a sweary family.

Mitebiteatnite · 23/08/2019 18:26

DH and I swear like troopers I'm afraid, so we're probably very crass in your opinion. Never in front of my mother though, and I don't swear at work (because I work with children Grin) but DH works in a very sweary office. Well, he used to but they hired a new manager who 'doesn't like all that foul language' so now him and his work friends just whisper swear words in each others ears as they walk past. Illicit swearing Grin

I'll sign off with my most favourite swear of all, courtesy of The Thick of It.....

Fuckety bye!

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 23/08/2019 18:28

Ah fuck! I’ll never get a flight in time. Do you think I could skype in?

ShawshanksRedemption · 23/08/2019 18:29

Context is everything. I don't swear very much because I never feel the need to. I can express myself without it. But there are times when I've called someone a twat when they are tailgating, or a FFS when something hasn't gone right, but I don't use it in everyday language.

My pet hate though is hearing really young kids swear at people when calling them names. A 5 year old calling someone a "poo-poo head" is waaaay different to a 5 year old saying "you fucking piece of shit". So I think adults need to think about when they swear in everyday language.

JacquesHammer · 23/08/2019 18:29

Do you think I could skype in?

Completely acceptable accordingly to Paragraph 7 of the rules.

minibroncs · 23/08/2019 18:31

I think swearing is good for one's health.

Haha no, not crass at all. As I said, I swear myself but I'm careful where I do it!

I was at a meeting earlier, talking about charity fundraising for our local children's hospice and one of the people there was almost "fuck this and fuck that"
There were several small children there and I lost all interest in anything she had to say after that point.

daphine2004 · 23/08/2019 19:26

I swear far too much and really trying hard not to, but it’s so fucking hard.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 23/08/2019 19:29

Well I, for one, never fucking swear.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 23/08/2019 19:32

I don’t swear in front of my family. Occasionally in the office, but depending on who else is present. Among my friends & on MN, fuck yes.
