What is Good Hygiene?

My DH and I are quarreling about what is Good Hygiene. What is Hygiene to you?

OP posts:

Do you mean for bodies or houses?
Tbh I think a lot of it depends on health and lifestyle so there are a lot of gray areas -
eg, some people with excema find it better if they shower every other day, others find it better if they shower twice a day.
Or with DC if you use bottles you are told to sterilize, if you breastfeed and only use open cups for water you don't.

Cleaning things so people don't get ill.

whothedaddy · 23/08/2019 14:21

Personally for me.

I brush my teeth 2 or more times a day.

I always shower before bed and after exercise and sometimes in the morning too.

We wash towels after 2-3 uses and bedsheets weekly.

Keeping the toilet bleached and the kitchen worktops wiped clean.

Changing underwear every day- I read something recently that a shocking percentage of people don't.

Personal or housekeeping?

ElleDubloo · 23/08/2019 14:26

Is Good Hygiene the title of a book?

Chouetted · 23/08/2019 14:28

Depends how many people there are, how close they are, whether you're in a commercial premises...

It's like asking what "good etiquette" is without giving any other details. The etiquette for dinner with the Queen is different from a pint down the pub with mates.

CassianAndor · 23/08/2019 14:29

personal or domestic?

Personal is minimum daily shower/bath (can be less frequent for DC), toothbrushing twice a day, hair washed so it's not smelling.

The one that crosses both personal and domestic is handwashing - after using the loo but most importantly - before handling food.

Domestic hygiene is pretty much handwashing - it was reported recently that that is the most important thing for keeping yourself germ-free, more so than washed floors and changed bedding. So all that is personal.

Hey OP - is this because your DH doesn't shower often enough?

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 23/08/2019 14:33

Be more specific please. Personal hygiene? Food hygiene? Domestic hygiene? Toilet hygiene? Sleep hygiene?

Fuzzyend · 23/08/2019 14:35

Whatever is required to be healthy and pleasant to be around. But that includes being healthy on the long term, so not using endless 'antibacterial' crap.

BuildBuildings · 23/08/2019 14:40

Yeah we need more details

Skrowten · 23/08/2019 17:09

My DH doesn't shower enough, maybe twice a week. Years of nagging hasn't changed this. He doesn't smell but it still really bothers me.

In what sense is it not enough then? Sounds fine to me.
