To make the electrician take his shoes off?

Got an electrician coming round tomorrow to fit some lights in our kitchen. We have a crawling baby and I want to ask the electrician to take his shoes off. DH says I'm nuts...

AIBU or is he? Would you make a workman take their shoes off in your house?

OP posts:

Funny, when my house build was at final fix, the contractor had all the subbies working in their socks.

ilovesooty · 22/08/2019 23:13

Of course he can't take his shoes off. You need to keep your baby away from the work anyway.

SwingoutSisterSledge · 22/08/2019 23:21

I'm with your husband here

CleverLoginName · 22/08/2019 23:24

Most people that arrive here have those blue shoe covers with them. Saves them having to keep taking shoes off

50shadesofblackclothing · 22/08/2019 23:24

To be fair, I would be 99% certain OP would ask him to take boots off so as not to have 'outdoor shoes' inside her 'no outdoor shoes' hallway/ bathroom/ living room etc whilst traipsing through or using facilities. But then this is MN so my 1% might actually be that she's considering letting the baby amble around whilst works are taking place. Doubtful though.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 22/08/2019 23:25

Then your contractor was breaking health and safety regulations The titefers

Dieu · 22/08/2019 23:27

Bonkers. And I'm the most anal, houseproud person ever.
How can people even think up and worry about this stuff in advance?

SquintEastwood · 22/08/2019 23:28

YABU.

DB is an electrician, rubber soles boots are part of his PPE to minimise risk of electrocution.

The workman's safety trumps any potential issues you may be dreaming up.

Lolwhat · 22/08/2019 23:31

So unreasonable

Mumtotwo82 · 22/08/2019 23:32

No don't ask him to take his shoes off. Can ask if he has shoe covers or provide them. Electricians often have to go in lofts and things it's not safe without footwear.

Swisskit · 22/08/2019 23:33

Nuts. YABVU. Taking shoes off is a new phenomenon. No one did it in my day and babies somehow managed to survive. Get a grip.

SummerInTheHamptons · 22/08/2019 23:34

Keep the baby out of the kitchen and clean the floor after?

FairyDust92 · 22/08/2019 23:35

Yes why not?
Anyone that enters my house have to take their shoes off. Why would anyone wear shoes indoors anyway?! Gross

NerrSnerr · 22/08/2019 23:38

@FairyDust92 even where they're doing electric work on ladders? Have you ever asked a tradesman to take his shoes off?

Louisasasa · 22/08/2019 23:41

Wait I’m also confused about why you’re worried about your baby and shoes?
Surely the baby won’t come into contact with the electrician’s work space?

TheSandgroper · 22/08/2019 23:41

IIRC, Hyacinth put down newspapers in a trail.

TrainspottingWelsh · 22/08/2019 23:43

Yanbu. Maybe install a sheep dip style foot bath to ensure he’s got clean feet and insist he brings brand new socks to work in, you never know what germs he could have on his. And perhaps spray him with flash at intervals to kill 99% of harmful bacteria he might be spreading.

FairyDust92 · 22/08/2019 23:43

@NerrSnerr then that would be a different situation wouldn't it. Yes I asked the gasman to take off his shoes. I don't like having god knows what crap trodden in my carpets 🤨. I just don't see why anyone who has worn shoes outside would wear them inside and that's my opinion :)

NerrSnerr · 22/08/2019 23:45

@FairyDust92 but it's not a different situation, it's exactly the situation the OP has posted about. An electrician doing electrics in the lights. How do you expect him to get to the lights? Of course on a ladder 🙄

NerrSnerr · 22/08/2019 23:46

. I just don't see why anyone who has worn shoes outside would wear them inside and that's my opinion :)

Some tradespeople need to wear PPE. It's not that difficult to grasp.

Princesspeachbum · 22/08/2019 23:47

I think you’re being really precious OP. Nobody ever died from shoe germs on their floor. Christ how will you cope when your kid goes to school?!

FairyDust92 · 22/08/2019 23:48

😴

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 22/08/2019 23:49

Really? What about nails and things lying around? Dropping hammers etc? Bit bloody dangerous.

Op, yabu a few germs won't hurt your baby

TreacherousPissFlap · 22/08/2019 23:49

DH is a heating engineer and would categorically not take his shoes off, for fear of dropping something on his foot, difficulty climbing ladders etc.
What he would do with absolutely no blink of hesitation is to wear shoe covers, and remove them before going outside. He even supplies his own but says it's becoming surprisingly common to be given them by the homeowner.
