To think the sad death of two public servants killed in the line of their work should be treated equally

Last week we heard the very sad news of PC Harper,s murder while on duty but the murder of social worker Belinda Rose last weekend who was killed while visiting a service user has gone largely unreported.

Why has there been such a difference in the media coverage of these two incidents? Belinda's murder has gone mainly unreported.

Is this as a result of the public having more sympathy with the police service or the fact that PC Harper was young and very recently married and Belinda was a 60 year old women.

AIBU to believe any person murdered while doing a job to help people should both receive the same attention and that Belinda deserves to be honoured as highly as PC Harper?

Murders*

The media dislikes socal workers and places no value what so ever in the hard work they do or in their value as human beings

BogglesGoggles · 22/08/2019 18:55

I would assume the Belinda wasn’t a newly wed. Most of the media coverage surrounding the police officer focused on his recent marriage.

Digestive28 · 22/08/2019 18:59

There maybe circumstances around the social worker death which aren’t being reported to protect the service users involved. The restricted reporting may limit what they can say so focus on other stories

tinytemper66 · 22/08/2019 19:03

I haven't heard of the sad news! I agree with apps about why.

TabbyMumz · 22/08/2019 19:40

"One other aspect in relation to police and fire fighters is that everbody else is allowed to run away from danger, it was PC Harpers job to run towards danger."

@siring1..That's not always true. Quite often you hear of people drowning and the police are told not to go in as they will put their own safety at detriment.

TabbyMumz · 22/08/2019 19:43

Just a question.....was the alleged murderer of the policeman from a traveller site? It's just they have made reference to it being near a traveller site and I wondered why. Plus, why did the Mum take a teddy bear to court? Her Son looked like he was a young Adult?

The media loves to portray social workers as scumbags who are out to steal children. There's a certain section of society who lap up this narrative. Then, when a child dies because social services left them in a dangerous situation, the narrative changes to the opposite.

Remember that news story a few years ago about a toddler who was taken into care because his parents were smokers? In reality, the father was a cocaine user and there was drug paraphernalia around the house. The smoking was relevant because there had been an incident where the father had been smoking over his asthmatic toddler, and the social worker herself had had to leave the room because the smoke was so thick that she could barely breathe. It was just another piece of the puzzle that showed how little the parents cared for their child's safety - they couldn't even be bothered to go outside to smoke, even though he needed an inhaler.

Yet Sky News, a seemingly impartial broadcaster, ran the headline "Child removed by social services because of parents' smoking." Cue howls of outrage about the nanny state and PC gone mad.

Having been at the centre of a media scrum over a murder, I wouldn't wish that on anyone. It was hellish and incredibly intrusive and damaging.

RainRainGoAway12 · 22/08/2019 20:41

I hadn’t heard about this. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. Agree it should have got more attention in the press. It isn’t only the police who have risky jobs. I have a friend who is a social housing officer and she’s been threatened by some of the residents she deals with but most of us wouldn’t consider it a ‘risky job’ either.

kazillionaire · 22/08/2019 20:57

Maybe the facts surrounding Belinda Rose's awful murder aren't so clear cut. On the report I read it stated that she often had nights out with the people at the house involves and went to family meals with them. It could be that she knew them personally and her job bore no relation to her killing. Its tragic.

Passthecherrycoke · 22/08/2019 20:59

I think its because social workers don’t uphold the law. So being killed (illegal) whilst trying to keep the public safe from
Crime is always going to get more attention.
It’s not about public service.

Although, how awful

nevernotstruggling · 22/08/2019 21:03

Social workers do uphold the law we work within a strict legal framework.

Court work is the bulk of my job.

Passthecherrycoke · 22/08/2019 21:04

I would see that as upholding the law in a completely different sense to be honest.

Watchingthyme · 22/08/2019 23:17

Police officers are the best we can get

ludothedog · 22/08/2019 23:32

What does that mean? "Police officers are the best we can get"?
I understand from that you think social workers are worth less than Police?
Now that is nasty
