To recoil from social media pics of students holding up cut outs saying '9' and 'we did it' in their pics

I just feel it all looks a bit naff. Does the 9 mean ' I got 9 gcse' or does it mean ' I got grade 9s?'. What's wrong with just having a nice, smiley group pic? Why do they need these silly props ?

Because they probably worked damn hard to get those results so let them have their moment of glory. My DD got her results today and is absolutely on cloud 9 (no 9's, but lots of 8's & 7"s). She can pose with whatever the hell she likes today if it makes her happy - it's her day!

WorraLiberty · 22/08/2019 16:02

Oh for goodness sake let them have their moment.

And I say that as the parent of a DS who got all 9s and hasn't/wouldn't announce it on social media.

Each to their own. There is nothing wrong with celebrating achievements.

Do you also feel anyone with a PHD shouldn't use the title 'Doctor'?

9 is the highest grade, better than A*

At the risk of being pedantic it's not quite true to say it's better, as grade boundaries aren't fixed its doesn't matter what you call the highest grade (A/A/A*/9 or even Z) it just denotes the top however many % in that year. You can't really make any absolute comparison

@Butchyrestingface @SchadenfreudePersonified

I'm glad it's not just me! My chemistry teacher told me not to do the exam that year because I was shit at maths and it showed

He wanted me to take the course over two years. I couldn't bear to sit in that class for another minute so I did the exam and came out with the same grade as I'd have received if I didn't show up Grin

It's odd, I don't feel I can share my ds1's incredible results on social media but the school have no such concerns and seemed to do it quite well. My son was in the obligatory celebratory picture and they included a summary of his results in their accompanying news article. Didn't come across as tacky or over the top at all but when I think about telling people his results, it just sounds like bragging😳

Props? Placards?

I have seen any of theses, just parents saying how proud they are, and where their DC are going next year. Most of them have had to just photos of their DC taken in holiday, I'm guessing that the DC refused to be photographed today. Grin

I too would recoil in horror at props.Shock

I wished I hadn't shown up Amused - it was humiliating.

I had worked so hard, too, but just couldn't get my head round it. Afterwards my maths teacher said I reallyshoulvdn't have been on the course (I'd needed maths fo what I'd wanted to do at uni - but obviously that went out of the window too). I do wish he'd told me when I was (say_ a term or two in and I could have changed my subject. I struggled, but thought that I at least had a hope of passing - I was wrong.

When I turned my paper over I nearly cried - I couldn't even understand the questions, let alone attempt them.

I'd always bee brought up not to give up on something - to see it though to the bitter end. Now I give something a good go - I don't give up at the first sign of struggle - but am able to accept that sometimes no matter how much effort ou put in at some topics, if you don't have a basic ability you will neither succeed nor get any personal satisfaction.

There are other subjects (eg many of the arts) where you can have a sense of achievement and satisfaction just from the
process even if you'll never win prizes at it (I'm rubbish at singing, but I love it).
