To expect capers to last longer than a week

I bought a jar of capers in brine with the bb date of 2022. Used them once then put in the fridge and just a week later they had def off. They smelled absolutely putrid! The recipe i had used a teaspoon of them and the rest had to be binned. I won't bother buying again..Surely they should last longer than that?

I’ve had a jar in the fridge for months. How odd.

No one ever uses more than 1 tsp of a jar of capers.

Next time make sure the brine covers the top of the capers, and they'll be as fresh as a daisy when you chuck 'em out in 2022.

The 2022 date tends to be if they aren’t opened.

I keep capers opened for weeks. Did anything get into the jar - on a spoon maybe?

Thanks for your replies everyone. Maybe they weren't properly sealed when i bought them but then they would be off when i opened them. The brine def was covering them. May be something did get in with them. Like a fly..there's enough of those buzzing around atm.

What annoys me is that why are they always sold in jars of hundreds of the things when you only need one bloody teaspoon?!! Hmm
