Do you judge bad diets even if the person is of a healthy weight?

I'm not sure I do, I'm probably more inclined to judge someone for eating bird food if they're being all holier than thou about it

Unless you live with someone how would you know whether or not they eat a "bad diet"?

That's a fair point, too. Even if you have lunch or dinner or whatever with someone frequently, you don't know what they eat for the rest of their meals.

Sakura7 · 21/08/2019 16:01

Unless you know the person well and see most of the food they eat, you have no idea what their diet is like. One unhealthy meal ordered while on a night out does not mean the person is risking their health FFS. Or the odd croissant or packet of crisps in the office. They could be going home and cooking a very healthy dinner from scratch for all you know.

hollieberrie · 21/08/2019 16:02

I do Shock at my young male work colleague who chomps through a whole packet of Maryland cookies/ Jammie Dodgers / similar every single afternoon without fail. He is super slim. It just astounds me that he enjoys all that sugar in one go. I would feel so nauseous.

hazandduck · 21/08/2019 16:04

A friend of mine had the worst diet. She eats takeaways about 5 nights a week, yet cooks healthy dinners from scratch for her children, she also eats constant chocolate, cake, crisps etc, and always has even since we were kids. She also was always very slim until mid twenties when it caught up a bit. I don’t judge but I worry. She is already on blood pressure tablets and her father had a heart attack in his early fifties. I can just see her going the same route :(

Gingerkittykat · 21/08/2019 16:07

I judge overweight colleagues who are constantly supping on sugary drinks, it is just such a dumb move. Maybe it's because I got my fizzy drink habit under control that I notice it.

The two skinny female colleagues who constantly munch haribo I just wonder how they manage it.

TrainspottingWelsh · 21/08/2019 16:12

myriade I don’t disagree that it might suit some people. But equally carbohydrates are needed for energy, so you can’t make blanket judgments on what is a healthy level of carbs for someone else based on your own low energy lifestyle. (By you I mean the people I’m thinking of, not you personally) And I don’t generally care what anyone else either eats or looks like.

But even if I was carrying the same excess fat as these particular individuals, I don’t agree they would have the right to lecture me on how much healthier their diet is. Let alone when I’m carrying significantly less fat and a stable weight do I find it acceptable for someone to lecture me for eating a cheese salad sandwich.

TellySavalashairbrush · 21/08/2019 16:12

No, but I do get irritated when work colleagues who are regularly off sick ,are overweight and constantly complain how exhausted they are, try to preach the virtues of Keto/blood type/low carb etc to me!

Sakura7 · 21/08/2019 16:12

Their body, their choice.

Maybe it's because I got my fizzy drink habit under control that I notice it.

The smugness is strong with this one.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/08/2019 16:15

People are funny, they make judgements on a single snapshot of someone’s life and then extrapolate it to suit their own prejudices I think.

Someone at work retired and was clearing out his classroom. He came to see if I wanted a couple of things. I was a bit taken back that one of them was a resource on healthy eating and he said he had thought of me and thought I might find the information useful for me or my children. Well, I am a perfectly normal and healthy weight for my height, and so are my children and we usually cook from scratch most nights and I hate McD’s so we only go on motorway services etc Cos it’s a holiday treat for the kids.

I racked my brains to think about what might have caused him to think I knew nothing about healthy eating and wondered if it was because he had seen me in the staffroom a couple of times stuffing a sandwich down my face plus a piece of shortbread that I used to treat myself to from the school canteen a couple of times a week. Both were much quicker to eat than a fiddly salad and an orange which was what he tended to have at lunch, and I only had 15 min slots to eat everything at that time.

I also remember him looking at my kids’ packed lunches with disdain when I brought them into work one summer so they could help me out with some admin. I had had to bribe them to come in and help by telling them they could get whatever they wanted from the corner shop for after their chicken wraps or whatever. Being teen and pre-teen at the time they had picked crisps and chocolate and a can of coke Grin and I also got a packet of crisps for me (had nothing in the house for after my sandwich as was going to the supermarket after work.)

Anyway, I can only assume he took one look at my kids chomping on their unhealthy stuff and assumed that that’s what they lived off every day. He was too polite to say anything but in hindsight I wished he had and I could have explained why they had all that unhealthy stuff. I often wonder whether he thinks of me and imagines us all sitting round eating Greggs and KFC every day and getting fat.

Anyway, anecdote over. People should be careful not to judge because they really don’t know the reasons behind why someone behaves a certain way.

JaceLancs · 21/08/2019 16:16

I don’t judge what people eat unless they moan at me about being over or underweight even then wouldn’t comment unless they asked for advice

Ninkaninus · 21/08/2019 16:18

No. I don’t judge anyone for any food choices.

Zaphodsotherhead · 21/08/2019 16:21

I work in a shop. The number of people who come through my till and say (half jokingly) 'please don't judge me...' when they are buying crisps and sweets is astonishing.

I don't judge anyone - as pp says, i don't know what they eat every day. But there must be people who do, or at least a lot of people who fear that others do, going by the sheer number of my customers who say it.

stayathomer · 21/08/2019 16:24

I'd never ever ever judge. I used to be a fussy eater and still ten years later have people say 'Oh I don't know if you'd like this' and talk all things food over my head. I'm a rubbish cook too so I hear all about that and my eldest is a fussy eater so that's thrown in too. Friends also have big debates over where to go to dinner with me so I agree with everything even if I hate the food, just so they won't keep asking am I okay during the meal, which is nice of them, but so embarrassingBlush

ElizaDee · 21/08/2019 16:45

I don't judge anyone else's diet regardless of what size they are, really. People have all sorts of reasons for eating the way they do.

I judge certain things. I once watched a now ex SIL give her toddler a happy meal for breakfast, a kfc kids meal for lunch and kebab shop for dinner. There's no reason for that.

Siameasy · 21/08/2019 16:59

I definitely notice. I try not to judge but yes I probably do sometimes 🤷‍♀️I’m sure people judge me as I eat high fat low carb and obv FAT IS BAD. I’m slim but have lots of comments about heart attacks etc but hey ho..
If someone talks about their diet then it is up for debate. If I talk about mine I expect criticism and that’s ok.
So eg
-Complaining about being fat whilst eating potato salad, cheese Doritos and fizzy drink. I will pass comment on this.
-complaining about beer gut whist praising beer. Ditto
-having an Instagram account dedicated to going on about Slimming World. Some of the meals are hideous (yes it’s not got many syns but is that even food?!). I will think - “Get your sugar addiction under control instead of pedalling rank fake sugar substitutes” 🤢

nowayhose · 21/08/2019 17:01

lol, this is MN, of course there will be judgement, lol. :)

Fuckedoff1 · 21/08/2019 17:22

I'm just watching "Trust me, I'm a doctor". He's just done an experiment on loads of different oils and fats used in cooking and butter and lard came out healthier than veg oil and sunflower oil. No I dont judge other people's diets and I keep doing it all wrong myself!

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 21/08/2019 17:28

I have no opinion on what anyone else says. Why would I? It’s up to them and have far better things to do with my time than stand around judging other people

Camomila · 21/08/2019 17:58

I always get teased for choosing salad when I'm out as I'm slim.
I'm not on a diet, I just find complicated salads faffy to make at home.

I do get annoyed with people who look down on others diets from positions of privilige/ignorance eg-
Person A: You should be vegan.
Person B: I'm aneamic with allergies.
Person A: Just eat more spinach.

Person A: Stop buying pre-chopped veg.
Person B: I've got dyspraxia.
Person A: That's not a real thing.

Sparklesocks · 21/08/2019 18:09

With other adults - If it’s not on my fork it’s not my business.

Fartoomanytoys · 21/08/2019 19:32

Why on Earth are you calling healthy food 'bird food'? Do you mean rabbit food?

I do judge a bit yes, I know I shouldn't but I can't help it. I know a few people who exist on coffee, cans of coke, crisps and biscuits. Never cook themselves a meal, I do wonder why you'd want to eat like that all the time as it must make you feel terrible.

dollydaydream114 · 21/08/2019 19:41

Did you swap your daily can of Coke for a pint of smug?

What the hell's it got to do with you if, and why, your colleagues are overweight? Maybe they don't like the way you look or the choices you make, either, because I'm pretty confident you're not Practically Perfect In Every Way either.

lljkk · 21/08/2019 19:53

I struggle to have an opinion.
One guy at work never eats 'junk' food but does have white rice every day.
Brown rice would be healthier imho. For the fibre. So seems odd choice.
Don't care what he puts in own mouth, though.

Another colleague dropped shedloads of weight on low carb.
I'd hate it, but happy to see him at a healthier weight.

Baguetteaboutit · 21/08/2019 19:55

What other people eat is their own business.

HundredMilesAnHour · 21/08/2019 20:33

I try not to judge people based on what they eat but when I see someone who is very obese eating a huge portion of something really unhealthy, I do have a moment. Then I have to remind myself that it's their choice and for all I know they've eaten salad for the last year and this is their first non-salad meal in ages.

I was very overweight for a couple of years (work stress, comfort eating, not exercising, etc) and I felt really awkward eating anything vaguely unhealthy in public. I was convinced people were looking at me thinking "fat greedy cow". Maybe they were, who knows. I find it hard to shake that feeling. Even today when I went out for lunch with my personal trainer/owner of my gym and I had one more slice of pizza than him. I've spent all afternoon berating myself. Even though I'm no longer overweight and I go the gym 6 days a week. And I eat pizza hardly ever. But I'm surrounded most of the time by people who eat very healthily and exercise a lot so maybe the only person left to judge is me!
