29.5k earnings who are you and how?!

AtSea1979 · 21/08/2019 10:11

BBC reports today say the average salary in the UK is £29,500.

I earn 12k but i’m part time (otherwise 18k). I live in the north. I can only dream about earning nearly 30k. I’ve thought about retraining but I wouldn’t know where to start as the job market seems so difficult.

AIBU to think the majority of people earn much less and it’s just the minority fat cats pulled that figure up?

DH and I each earn about that. I'm a lawyer and he's a graphic designer. We are far from fat cats.

Skyejuly · 21/08/2019 20:02

Civil service- east Anglia.. FT 26k we have 4kids and manage

ParkingPedants · 21/08/2019 20:04

Oh god, I read the title as 29.5K EAR-RINGS & thought it was about how much people spend on one pair Grin

LewisFan · 21/08/2019 20:09

I earn a smidge over that and am a Social Worker with a post graduate qualification. I expect this to increase fajrly soon as I'm 2 years qualified now and looking to get further responsibility.

perplexedagain · 21/08/2019 20:11

I have been on the same £30-34K salary in the public sector for the last 15 years. No real opportunities for pay progression as higher grade jobs have been the first to go

LewisFan · 21/08/2019 20:11

*fairly Hmm

stanski · 21/08/2019 20:13

40K Client Relationship Manager, London. Everyone I know is between 25-130k aside from two people who earn around 250k a year (cybersecurity and lawyer)

whatthehelldowecare · 21/08/2019 20:14

I'm a newly qualified solicitor in Scotland - on 34k

Scottishgirl85 · 21/08/2019 20:20

I live in an affluent area in the south east and nobody my age earns less than that. The norm around here is several times that figure. In my profession the starting salary after university was slightly more than that. So to me that average seems about right, given that salaries are higher here than in the north. But remember expenses are higher in the South too! Our mortgage and childcare alone per month is over £3k.

huggybear · 21/08/2019 20:26

Mumsnet is not real!

I put a household income of 60k into the IFS calculator and it said 'With a household after tax income of £1120 per week, you have a higher income than around 93% of the population - equivalent to about 59.9 million individuals'

which1 · 21/08/2019 20:27

I earn what I consider a reasonable salary that is above the average but I'd say I probably earn in the bottom 25% on Mumsnet.

So many people who mention their salary on Mumsnet (and not specifically on the salary related threads such as this one) earn £60k upwards, many talk of being on 100/200k etc.

People says it's all made up, and yes that might be true in one or two cases but I think 95% salaries mentioned are truthful.

codenameduchess · 21/08/2019 20:27

North east and public sector, finance type role on £32k, next step will take me to £35-40k then have options to continue progressing or move to consulting.

How? I'm not sure, I stumbled into this field about 6 years ago on a £16k admin job with no qualifications and moved along fairly quickly, switched company at the right time twice and now have all the qualifications I need to carry on progressing paid for by employers so no debt.

CherryPavlova · 21/08/2019 20:29

I know very few people on less than that. My children are all on quite a bit more - all over 40k - although the youngest is only paid that for a summer internship so will go back to student money soon.
The others also have extra income from specific allowances and occasional weekend locus on-call work.
My son (24) will be on around £65k this year from allowances, rent from his flat and substandard accommodation pay.

Our own friends are all on a lot more than that but are closer to the end of their careers.

Lifecraft · 21/08/2019 20:30

Median is just the middle value @Jux @Lifecraft. Half the dataset will be above this and half will be below.

This figure of £29500 isn't the median, it's the mean. I suspect 90+% will be below that and under 10% above.

CCCC12 · 21/08/2019 20:31

My niece recently went into a finance grad job - in Leeds and is on £28, with regular payrises. Think it depends on education and choice of career.

Jimdandy · 21/08/2019 20:32

Comm Prop Solicitor here in a midlands firm. I’m only 2 years PQE so on £35k

IckleWicklePumperNickle · 21/08/2019 20:36

I work in a call centre and we just changed bands and now the top of our new range is over 31k. ( no where near a manager roll at all- just low minions)
I think we worked it out we will reach the top end of next year. Because of what we earn already.
We know how lucky we are. New entrants don't nearly get that much -about 10k less in our role and we have very good benefits.

IckleWicklePumperNickle · 21/08/2019 20:37

And DH earns over 34k. He moves about in his company and currently does surveying.

MamaFlintstone · 21/08/2019 20:38

This figure of £29500 isn't the median, it's the mean. I suspect 90+% will be below that and under 10% above

Median UK salary in 2018 was £28,400 so I’m not sure your suspicions are correct.

IckleWicklePumperNickle · 21/08/2019 20:46
  • role ffs
Singlebutmarried · 21/08/2019 20:49

Me PT 12k. Would be 31k if FT

DH is a contractor, pulls in nearly 10 x what I do.

lakeswimmer · 21/08/2019 20:51

I earn £29k in the voluntary sector in the North West working full time. I'm assuming that those that don't know anyone earning less than that don't know anyone who works for a charity!

DH also in voluntary sector and earns less than £29k and many of my colleagues earn less too. Most of them have relevant qualifications and do challenging work.

Lifecraft · 21/08/2019 20:52

Median UK salary in 2018 was £28,400 so I’m not sure your suspicions are correct.

What's your source for that? I read that the median salary was around £18K. Average (mean) salary was £28400.

In maths terms, average is always mean, unless told specifically otherwise.

Jenala · 21/08/2019 20:52

I'm a social worker. I earn about 20k for 3 days a week, just over 30k full time. DH is a bricklayer but still learning so on a day rate, earns about 30k before tax. No holiday or sick pay for him though.

sausages75 · 21/08/2019 20:56

Lovesapinot totally agree about the nursing. It's a shame as they keep telling us how desperate they are for nurses. I think Women our age would have a lot offer nursing it's a shame.
