To think this is enough money for 2 weeks

We are taking our 3DC to Disney world Florida next March and my DH thinks we will need more than 3k spending money for the two weeks we are there

AIBU to think that 3k should be more than enough? I've never travelled to Disney before so I'm prepared to be told that 3k won't be enough... we have a dining plan

Also if you've been to Disney how much did you spend? I don't want to be really tight with the kids over there like I am here and would like some wriggle room and not have to worry that we don't have enough

Of course it's more than enough. What planet is your DH on?

toodisorganised · 20/08/2019 14:53

@SirJamesTalbotAndHisSpeculum god knows... he's male after all 😂

What would you say is a reasonable budget to not feel like we have to be careful? Have you been?

If you have a dining plan you shouldn't need £3k. Is it the table service or quick service plan? Are you planning on leaving Disney to go to the outlets?

boymum9 · 20/08/2019 15:02

I'd most definitely say that's enough especially if you're on a dining plan! Enjoy, have the best time!!
(Watch dfb guide, Disney food blog, on YouTube for some great tips to make your dining plan and money food wise go as far as it can, she's really great!)

zafferana · 20/08/2019 15:03

That's loads of money, particularly if you've already paid for your food (I'm assuming that's what a dining plan entails?). We've been to Disney and reckoned on about £100 a day for food, drinks and incidentals for four of us (we didn't have a dining plan, so needed to eat lunch there).

NoSquirrels · 20/08/2019 15:04

Fuck me, sounds like LOADS. Two weeks = 14 days, right? £214 a day, over £40pp per day. And you’ve got eating already covered. What is he intending to spend it on?

toodisorganised · 20/08/2019 15:06

We have the Disney dining plan which is two meals and two snacks I believe.

I have no idea what's he's planning to spend it on.

We did want to get a hire car and go to the Florida coast and I know the kids have their eye on target! 🤔

£3K will give you a budget of just over $200 per day. that's $40 per person per day. If your park tickets are already paid and you are on a dining plan you should be fine. Maybe agree a daily budget for treats/snacks/souvenirs. There will be days where you spend hardly anything and other days maybe a little more. Just consider some souvenirs such as harry potter wands or lightsabers are quite pricey. You could end up spending over $200 in one day if you are buying those types of souvenirs.

SirJamesTalbotAndHisSpeculum · 20/08/2019 15:08

Even budgeting for the hired car it sounds like a shit-load of money just for two weeks, OP.

PooWillyBumBum · 20/08/2019 15:08

Personally I wouldn't take more because you may end up spending it just because and the souvenirs are horrendously expensive. There are loads of disney forums that will have guides on how much spending money e.g. www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g34515-i19-k11381305-Spending_money_whilst_in_Disneyworld_on_dining_plan-Orlando_Florida.html

I'd save at least a grand of that and have a nice mini break another time too!

lifecouldbeadream · 20/08/2019 15:09

Depends- are you staying onsite or off site.

We generally budgeted £100/ day, but I think that won’t go very far now the £ has dropped against the $. Portions are generally large so we share some bits. For a family of 4 in 2017, snacks were $20 for an ice cream in the parks. Roughly $10 per head for a cheapish lunch and around double that for meals and drinks in the evening.
It’s very dependent on what you like to eat and your general standard of living.

If you dine regularly in good restaurants, then the figures I’ve given won’t go far.

Have a look at the Dibb if you want a better idea.

namby · 20/08/2019 15:10

We are only taking £1000 for 4 of us for 2 weeks (we have a dining plan for 11 days, that doesn't include our children's spending money or the character meals which will come from a different "pot"). I'm rubbish at budgeting at home, but bizarrely very good on holiday!

lifecouldbeadream · 20/08/2019 15:10

If you’ve got the dining plan- 3k will be way more than you need! Most people struggle to eat the meals allowed by the plan!

Myotherusernameisshy · 20/08/2019 15:11

We didn’t spend £3k when we went with three kids and no dining plan! If you have the full dining plan where you have a sit down meal you do need to factor in tips - 20% of cost of meal which can be $$$ in Disney - look on the app and you can see menus and prices to get an idea.

silverwings · 20/08/2019 15:19

When we have been to Florida and did the parks etc we budgeted for about £1k per week (family of 4), we were self catering.

Yabbers · 20/08/2019 15:24

We easily spent 1k in the US in a week, but that mainly went on things like paying for attractions and taxis, along with 3 meals a day for 3 of us.

It does depend on what you will be doing. How many days at Disney and how many days out and about. I’d probable see us spending at least 2k in two weeks.

Dailyjunglegrind · 20/08/2019 15:36

What are the ages of the DC? This accounts for a lot. How long are you spending at Disney?
There is ALOT of merchandising shops there not to mention the shopping in Florida to spend at. I presume park passes been purchased with hotel & dining plans.
Our DC started collecting those lanyard badges all the people wear, we had a significant investment in those, plus Disney theme t shirts & boopity shop make over.

..it’s probably adequate if food is covered, be prepared if it goes over, if not, easy .. use towered next hols.

MadCattery · 20/08/2019 15:42

I live in Florida and have been to Disney too many times. While they have honed the art of separating people from their money, 3000 is more than enough! Have fun!

Purplejay · 20/08/2019 15:59

£3k spends sounds plenty.

DS (12) and I have just has 8 nights in New York and our budget was £100 per day plus $50 each for souvenirs. I had already bought sightseeing passes for around $400. The hotel was room only so we mainly bought food and transport out of the £100 per day. Some days we spent more, others less. Eating out/shopping seems pretty expensive partly because it is New York i.e. major city but also because of the poor exchange rate. We did have a kitchenette so tended to make breakfast here and a couple of days got hot food from the supermarket to eat in the hotel. We had a great trip.

I suggest you give your kids a budget for souvenirs/shopping. If you allowed £200 for everyone that’s £1000. You still have £2000 left. We normally have an entire holiday for around that (not to the USA tho)!

The meal plan will cover most of your food but you may need a little extra. Presumably you are in a disney hotel and already have tickets to the parks? Transport to the parks will also be included.

When we did disney 4 years ago, we spent just over 5k for 3 of us on the entire 2 week trip. We never left disney world. We had the most amazing time.

DS and I are going to Orlando in 2020, this time doing a variety of stuff. My budget for the entire trip is 5k. £2600 for flights, hotel (we are staying at universal) and transfers, so that leaves £2400 spends - to cover park tickets (around £500 for universal tickets then there will be day trips to disney/other attractions), all food, souvenirs and shopping. Can’t wait!

Enjoy your trip.
