DM putting dog to sleep

DogWorried · 20/08/2019 09:41

Morning all, I've NCd as their are outing details in this post.

My DM and DF live in a private rented house with my DS (18yo) due to my DF falling ill where his business went under and our family home was repossessed.

My DM has had a message from her LL (who is dodgy as hell) suggesting that she wants to kick my DM and DF and turn the house into a holiday let like she has done to the house next door.

Obviously, DM is worried sick about the uncertainty of their future and has said that if they have to move she'll have to put their dog down as it'll be near impossible to find another private rent that will allow a big dog and no one will adopt him as he's old (10).

Is there anyway to convince my DM to put the dog up for adoption if the worst should happen? Any good dog shelters you could recommend. Our poor dog is a gentle giant and I can't bare the thought of him being put down.

I can't take him in myself as I'm in a private rental myself and are not allowed any dogs at all. Sad

There are way more rentals accepting pets nowadays than ever before - I’d check those options before anything else

MaMaMaMySharona · 20/08/2019 15:12

I actually can't believe someone would even consider putting their pet down for such a minor reason! It wouldn't even cross my mind as an option!

Vibiano · 20/08/2019 15:12

Could you try asking on local Facebook groups if anyone knows of a rental that might be suitable? Worth a try.

Summerunderway · 20/08/2019 15:26

I spent 1.5k keeping my ddog alive and you want to kill yours!!
Beyond belief.
We were evicted as our home was also to be a holiday place. Ll was a twat.
10 weeks to rehouse multiple dc, 3 ddogs, 2 dcats, reptiles and chickens.
We managed.
Paid deposit /bond and £100 for each ddog.
What area op as my ll takes pets and I know of another ll who does?

dreichhighlands · 20/08/2019 15:31

I take pets as a landlord but new regulations mean that you are no longer allowed to ask for extra deposits, or indeed accept them if offered so offering a larger deposit no longer works.

ittakes2 · 20/08/2019 15:37

We secured a private rental for my m'n'law that initially said no pets but we offered to pay double the deposit and the dogs were 10 plus so landlord agreed.

Cocobean30 · 20/08/2019 15:39

Speak to their intended vet and tell them what they are planning and tell them not to! No decent vet will put a dog down for such a stupid reason! I’d be fuming if I were you

Icypop · 20/08/2019 15:45

It is absolutely the reponsible descision.
To send a dog to a potentially already overcrowded shelter where it may be in distress that its loving family have abandoned it. There is no guarantee it will be rehomed again...or even that it would end up in a loving home even if it does find a home. Id do the same, but this isnt a popular opinion on here.
Help your dm to try and find a rental which allows pets. But dont encourage her to rehome your dog you dont know where it could end up...even if you find someone suitable you dont know that their circumstances will change in the future.

GotToGoMyOwnWay · 20/08/2019 15:50

Have you read the thread @Summerunderway? The ops DM is being threatened with eviction. She’s probably thinking of the easiest solution & knows it may be difficult to rehome the dog. The OP is asking for alternatives to the dog being PTS.

DogWorried · 20/08/2019 17:48

@summerunderway you really should learn how to read before you go mouthing off at someone.

My parents live in North Wales and there really aren't a lot of places that accept pets. My parents will struggle to find a deposit for a new place let alone pay anything extra for having a dog Sad. It's difficult to find a genuine private LL especially in a rural area.

I was also evicted. Still managed. We moved 30 miles away to find a ddog suitable address....
I can read.

dreichhighlands · 20/08/2019 20:14

I am going to repeat that in England at least Landlords now have strict limits on the amount of deposit they can ask for.
Taking large extra pet deposits is now illegal.
This may make it harder to rent with pets but probably not impossible.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 20/08/2019 20:32

That seems extreme and tbh most vets worth their salt wouldn’t be willing put a healthy friendly animal down just because its inconvenient for you to you to keep it. I live in a private rental with several cats and a dog amoungst other things and have previously rented with a number of large dogs, they were not easy to find but they are out there.

4legsandawaggytail · 20/08/2019 20:52

I've always rented privately and only once been refused permission to have a dog. You do pay a pet premium though on top of your deposit. Old dogs are not a problem to rehome. Just make sure it's not a shelter that will euthanize.

Twooter · 20/08/2019 21:17

What breed is he?

Hairsprayqueeen · 20/08/2019 21:17

Could you set up GoFundMe for kennels or foster or respite care or whatever while things are sorted out OP? Just an idea. I'd donate to it. highlands do you have any further information on the deposit thing? It's not been relevant to me recently but if youd kindly send me some, i haven't heard that.

tabulahrasa · 20/08/2019 21:22

What breed of dog is it?

Because tbh, some large breed dogs at 10 may well be better being PTS by loved ones rather than going through the stress of being rehomed...

dreichhighlands · 20/08/2019 21:24

blog.openrent.co.uk/maximum-tenancy-deposit-the-new-rules-and-how-to-calculate-5-weeks-rent/

Here is some basic info, I think I've deleted the fact sheet my agents sent me.
Note the last comment that the only to to cover pets legally is too increase rent overall.

Toneitdown · 20/08/2019 21:27

There are rentals that take pets. Just look for one of those?! Seems ridiculously extreme to not bother looking and just put the dog down Confused

messolini9 · 20/08/2019 21:40

I'd be more worried about your parents having to move while your dad is ill tbh.

& I'm sure OP is, & doesn't need a lecture on her priorities.
However, she can possibly affect the dog's outcome.
She has no control over her parents' outcome.

messolini9 · 20/08/2019 21:44

Can’t you say you’re taking him home then take him straight to the dogs trust?

Absolutely NOT.

DM knows her own dog, She's had him for 10 years & is presumably heartbroken. As will the dog be, a mature chap used to his home comforts & his trusted family. He would be miserable, stressed, lonely, pining, confused, terrified, & unlikely to be adopted due to his years.

A Rescue centre is not always the best option.

Flowers OP - what a quandary.
Maybe someone can come up trumps for Ddog. Sorry I cannot be more helpful than that, my own dog-quota is presently full ...
