Nearly killed my family

(light hearted, but true!)

So .... Couple of weeks ago I made a roast for my DH and 2 DCs. There were no gravy granuals left so I searched the cupboard as I was sure we had more hidden somewhere! Found another tub which was open! Yey! Happily made some gravy.

Gravy smelt a bit mouldy/musty! But I thought maybe it was meant to smell like this and I must be imagining there's something wrong, I'm sure it's fine. I asked DH if gravy smelt ok, he said yes. He and the DCs devoured it!

Yesterday I made a roast and got the same tub from the cupboard. Have no idea why, but decided to check the best before date. Aaaaaaagggghhh ... It was best before November 2015!!!!

DH and DCs both seem to have survived the incident and are none the wiser

Am I being unreasonable to think I almost killed them by serving up 4 year old gravy!!!! (Blush)

I have a salad dressing in my fridge door that I've been using for at least 3 years. Still alive.
It's a bloody waste to throw something away because it's expired. (Ok, maybe medicine but I tend to ise those still as well.)

PerkingFaintly · 20/08/2019 11:25

Oh, um, yeah, wouldn't try this trick with elderflower cordial, mind. At least, not with the one that has to be kept in the fridge (think it was Belvoir).

Tasted OK-ish.

Was really not OK.

In a "gushing both ends" kind of way.

MindatWork · 20/08/2019 11:31

OP surely you must know using gravy granules is one of the Mumsnet seven deadly sins, along with:

  • Having a tv in the bedroom
  • Flushing sanpro
  • Using antibacterial wipes
  • Not getting at least 5 meals out of a roast chicken
  • Having more than 1 or 2 children because of the environment

... I’n out, can anyone think of two more? Grin

Toilet brushes

quitefranklyivehadenough · 20/08/2019 11:58

You forgot "more than 10 minutes a day screen time"

ImMeantToBeWorking · 20/08/2019 12:19

I bought a pancake mix earlier this year. Never used it. We were going to make pancakes the other day and said I would use it up. It was out of date since Feb 2017. It was only bought this Feb for Pancake Tuesday. Just shows, even Aldi don't take the best before dates seriously.

MindatWork · 20/08/2019 18:21

@iklboo THANK YOU! I knew I’d missed a biggie Grin

@quitefranklyivehadenough 5 mins, surely? Grin

Mollyboboff · 20/08/2019 19:05

We had a sweet potato and lentil curry yesterday made with a jar of sauce that went out of date in 2016, I'm alive !

bridgetreilly · 20/08/2019 19:08

Best before dates are meaningless:

Nearly killed my family
quitefranklyivehadenough · 20/08/2019 19:18

@MindatWork 5 minutes on school days 10 in the summer hols 😂

dementedma · 20/08/2019 19:23

DH is paranoid about best before dates...but I do most of the cooking. If he only knew some of the stuff he has eaten and pronounced delicious. Haven’t killed him yet.

boatyardblues · 20/08/2019 19:27

A few years ago, DM made Christmas pudding with suet which had a price sticker on it in shillings. It didn't taste great (but that is standard for DM's cooking) but we all survived.

😂

Bridget - that salt example is brilliant.

Does everyone know about float-testing their eggs? Fill container with water, place egg in container of water. If it sinks it’s still OK to eat. If it floats, its not OK. I was about to put some 3 week out of date eggs in the food waste caddy recently but tested them. They were fine & so was the cake I baked with them.

RaspberryRippleCrisps · 20/08/2019 19:33

I thought you were going to say you'd served up dissolved rat poison....
That's what I thought you were going to say! Gravy granules that are 4 years out of date won't taste very nice, but they certainly woukdnt kill you!

BooseysMom · 20/08/2019 19:50

@onalongsabbatical.. Thanks for explaining about iodine & radiation...i had no idea.

😂😂 I think you’d struggle to kill your family this way. I thought this was going to be about a near miss high speed. car accident or similar

So did i! Grin

StrawberrySquash · 20/08/2019 20:30

Gravy granules are dry and are mostly salt. Not much is going to grow in them.

tillytoodles1 · 21/08/2019 14:02

My FIL has a spice rack with some of the prices on the jars in old money, one of them is priced at 1s/6p and has a best before date of January 1971.

BooseysMom · 21/08/2019 19:53

1971?! Shock that reminds me of my DN's cupboards..before she died there was a ton of ancient artefacts in them!!

Just thought of another MN deadly sin...

Not knowing what Zoflora is (as on a thread about making your house smell nice)
