Hi all. Not really an aibu but hoping to find out what others spend.

Family of four and a dog. Two adults, two children and the dog.

We spend around £80-90 on a large shop and maybe a top up later in the week.

I get my shopping delivered with Tesco because they offer the best service.

Mil thinks this is too much and joked around that we should go on Eat Well For Less. She keeps saying that I have to shop at Lidl to save money. The nearest stores are a 30 minute drive away (live in the middle of nowhere) and I order to get my shopping delivered. I hate shopping and I have two DC with additional needs that also hate shopping.

I don’t think we over eat or anything. We don’t buy anything overly expensive or branded but we don’t use budget ranges either.

Is £80-£90 really that excessive? With the top up we may spend around £100-£110 a week?

What do other familes of four spend?

I’ve tried cutting down but we ended up not having enough for and needing to do another bit shop.

The summer holidays have also increased the spend slightly! £££

Ive recently switched from Tesco to Aldi ans im honestly not saving much at all. Im vegetarian, and we dont all eat the same meals every day. For example, if I make a curry, dh and I have paneer and mushroom curry, the kids have chicken fricase as they wont eat anything spicy. That increases costs too. We tend to spend between £60- 90 per week, over the month it is probably £320.

We spend more than you, and dog is on a diabetic diet so spend £££ on that. It's none of their business what you spend on shopping.

Two adults and a dog £200 per week. It’s fucking ridiculous. We work from home so breakfast, lunch and dinner. Snacks too.

Oblomov19 · 20/08/2019 14:45

2 adults and 2 sport playing teenage boys who eat like a horse, and that seems cheap to me. I do huge £100 shops each week, or so, and top ups. I shop in Aldi and Sainsbury's and occasionally Tesco and Morrison's and I batch cook and I still spend a fortune.

2 adults, 2 children plus a cat and I spend at least a £100 a week if not more depending on whether we're having guests, if it's school holidays etc.

I do a monthly shop, and shop at farmers markets and our local fish quay, depending what’s in season I can spend £300-£600 per month.

Then I shop at Asda/Major for everything else we need which can be up to £300

Then we top up at our local supermarket which can be £30-50 a time, about once or twice a month.

4 adults and 3 cats and I spend about £70 per week but my two adult sons buy a lot of their own food so I only get the staples like rice and bread for them. But will often add a pack of pants or socks into the supermarket shop.
Cat food is about £10 a week. I don’t drink so no booze but I do buy quite a lot of soft drinks. I do aleast one veggie meal a week with will be something with jacket potatoes. I use laundry eggs so no expensive detergents but I still use conditioner for some washes.
Cleaning materials I buy in bulk and decant into reusable bottles works out about £15 a quarter in addition.
Shampoo, conditioner, soap and the like I buy from the body shop and probably spend an additional £20 pm.

I could easily spend less if I needed to but I don’t mind spending that bit more to buy ethically produced items.

Family of 4 - 2 adults and 2 children (10 & 15)

Depending on where we shop I spend between £80-100 on a main shop and probably £10-15 on a top up later in the week. I try to shop at Aldi as it's definitely the cheapest option

Shooturlocalmethdealer · 20/08/2019 15:47

I live in the States. I spend around 200 or more weekly. I have a grandson with peanut, tree nut, milk and egg allergies. Always shop with a list too.

I spend 60-70 per week and its me and 1 teen and one 9 year old, 3 cats

historysock · 20/08/2019 17:00

£400 or thereabouts a month, four of us and two dogs.
Sometimes a bit less but that's the budget.
Includes toiletries and cleaning stuff and flowers once a week (from me to me), and some, but not much booze.

KTCluck · 20/08/2019 20:12

@Youngandfree, yes we also just try for the essentials and not bags of extra stuff. I seem to have some hoarding tendencies when it comes to food too so I make sure to check the larder while doing the shopping list, not just buy another 5 tins of chopped tomatoes to add to the pile! I’ve barely bought any cleaning products or toiletries for ages since I did a big declutter and started using up what we had stashed.

Crochetcrochetcrochet · 20/08/2019 20:20

£40-£50 a week, 4 of us at Aldi. There's no extra money in our budget so it has to be that. Includes nappies & cleaning things. Safe bread for DS allergies from Waitrose and Oat milk from Asda.

We don't drink, and don't eat much meat. It's not easy, involves very careful meal planning and no treats, but it is what it is.

This is like asking how long is a piece of string really. I spend about £140 a week for 3 adults and one child
