WIBU to send a snotty message?

I’m selling a child’s toy on Gumtree. It’s quite a difficult thing to find as it’s not made anymore. £25, although I’m not in it for the money, if that is relevant.

Someone contacted me saying they were “desperate” for this toy for their child. However, they were 2 hours away and asked if I would hold it for them until they could travel to us at weekend. I said I would, but offered to post it instead. They declined and said they were travelling half way to visit someone anyway.

We arranged our Saturday around this pick up. Then at collection time (2pm) when I had promised my kids we would finally go out, I get a message saying they are delayed. I sigh and say okay. Then we get a further message an hour later saying their sat nav is “driving them in circles” and in an hour they have made 15 minutes’ progress. Can I post it after all? They’ll pay postage and pay £30 for the toy.

Very irritated, but reluctant to have wasted all my time for nothing, I say fine. Spend a while finding a box and wrapping it suitably and send my PayPal details on Saturday night. I’ve not heard from them since. Their usual response times were a couple of hours max.

I know I’m a mug, but she seemed so keen on the toy and it seemed completely unfeasible that someone would go to such lengths for a wind up. Doesn’t it?!

I’ve wasted so much time. WIBU to give 1 star (worst rating) and send a snotty message? I know it doesn’t achieve anything, but it might make me feel better!

I don’t understand, are you saying you posted this item without getting paid?!

Always do cash on collection!

NameChangerDanger · 19/08/2019 20:48

No, no. Sorry. I’m saying she’s just disappeared. No money has changed hands. I would‘t send it without the money.

As I say, I’m not really bothered about the money- they’re headed for the charity shop now. I was just going to give my kids a bit of pocket money.

It’s my time and the utter ridiculousness of the sat nav stuff that has pissed me off!

What toy is it?
You’ll get a lot of time wasters on FB... my advise is to not hold the item for anyone

Cassilis · 19/08/2019 20:50

Ah I see! Stick it on eBay!

Make sure you send by recorded post though.

neighbourssitu · 19/08/2019 20:52

Yes eBay is sometimes easier and you might even get more money for your toy. Less chance of time wasters. Facebook and gumtree can be hard work.

Fisher Price peek-a-blocks. Nothing especially exciting. I paid £40 for them a few years ago- there’s a lot of them.

This was Gumtree. She would have to have searched for this item specifically. Never had a problem with Gumtree before.

I was just trying to do a nice thing. Ho hum. My local charity shop or playgroup will benefit as I’ve lost the will with them now.

Thanks Smellbow, but in all likelihood you’d need to be driving “up”!

I hate selling on Facebook because of this! Have a strict first come first serve otherwise people take advantage.

Lucyccfc68 · 19/08/2019 21:06

I gave up selling my DS's toys due to these kind of idiots.

Was selling excellent condition Play Mobile set (for less than half price £25) and got asked if I would deliver. I said I might, depending on where they lived. It turned out to be a 4 hour round trip and she offered me £5 for petrol!

I used a very well known MN phrase - called her a CF and blocked her.

NameChangerDanger · 19/08/2019 21:07

Maybe I should send a search party out? I mean, the lady asked her mum to come with her as she was uncertain of the area and seemed to have a very dodgy sat nav. Maybe she hasn’t made it home?
