AIBU parking in Cornwall

Hi Mumsnetters, hoping some of you will know the answer to help me out!

I’m in Cornwall for the week with my DC, planning on visiting different beaches while we’re here, probably for the whole day (0900-1600). Where can I park without paying through the nose? All of the day parking is £8-£9 a day, I was hoping for half of that or if possible free on street parking?!

I don’t mind walking about a mile... tomorrow I was hoping to go to Gylly beach, will be going to Porth, Fistral bay and any others than you can suggest!!

The car parks are priced high for a reason, too many cars. I'd just accept it as part of the paying for holiday/ local facilities. And please don't park outside someone's house taking their spot.

PhannyMcNee · 19/08/2019 21:42

Oh and there’s also free off road parking near Swanpool too if you are early enough. The 3 Falmouth beaches are really close together. You can also park at Pendennis Point for free...

Waffles80 · 19/08/2019 21:43

@Benjispruce did you read the bit about the OP being IN Cornwall? Flights / ferry to Brittany / Ireland are going to blow her parking budget out of the water. Hmm

Fudgenugget · 19/08/2019 21:43

We went to Bournemouth for the day from our holiday lodge in the New Forest last year and parking near the beachfront was £15 for four hours. We had to park there because my mother in law had mobility issues.

WeeDangerousSpike · 19/08/2019 21:47

NT can look you up on the computer if the car park is associated with a property / somewhere that has a reception desk.

Wehttam · 19/08/2019 21:48

Parking can be a nightmare especially in St Ives, Kynance, Porthcurno etc. The National Trust seems to have put turnstiles on almost every beach/ beauty spot so it can be expensive for us non members. Have an amazing time, we are 2 weeks back from a 2 week trip to St Ives, I’m very jealous!

ParkingPedants · 19/08/2019 21:49

It can be tricky to park here, due to millions thousands of welcome visitors.

Some Council car parks offer a weekly rover ticket for £47.

You will have to check that your destinations are included though in the parking zone.

Most people park on the street if possible, to save money I suppose,

Although I know of a hospital Doctor that parked out on the road whilst on night shifts, to avoid the hospital car park charges in Hayle, where she worked.

A resident took offence at the Drs cost cutting idea and keyed her car Hmm

So it's locals against locals as well!

Enjoy your week Wine

Perranporth has a lovely beach and on it is Chapel Rock which has a natural swimming pool in it which is where I learnt to swim. I grew up there and the beach is very popular.

Benjispruce · 19/08/2019 21:51

waffles Yes I recommended Brittany and Ireland for future holidays to avoid repeating said problem. Similar beaches to Cornwall but fewer people. Do you understand or would you like some help?

ParkingPedants · 19/08/2019 21:53

£47 for a week.

Hopefully 2 photos of Falmouth seafront. White arrow points to Gylly on each.
White lines show on street parking, not outside houses, without restrictions.
Toilets and cafes on each of the 3 beaches but only Gylly is lifeguarded.

Treyarnon is I think £4 a day.
Trevose free with NT membership.
Harlyn & Constantine £5 a day.

littlebitbroken · 19/08/2019 22:03

FFS pay the going rate. We wait all year for you suckers tourists to get here so we can afford to pay the rent on our houses pushed ever higher by you bloody second home owners.

Put up and shaddap.

Wehttam · 19/08/2019 22:19

Lol littlebitbroken waiting for the pennies the generous emmets donate to Cornwall to feed the locals 😂💋

littlebitbroken · 20/08/2019 05:20

@Wehttam

Whilst they look to dodge the £7 per day parking charge by parking outside my bloody house when they're on home county wages.

transformandriseup · 20/08/2019 05:32

In Hayle you can park alongside the quay for free and walk to the beach.

transformandriseup · 20/08/2019 05:43

Waves to my office in those photos Grin

You can park in falmouth on the road going up to the station and in a few of the streets around the nearby hotels but you will be completing against the dockworkers for a space.

Also many car parks are much cheaper or free after 5pm.

Skittlesandbeer · 20/08/2019 05:57

Next year, consider coming to my local beaches for your holiday instead?

We have 26,000kms of free parking coastline. I’d like to see them try to charge for it.

On the downside, parking the aeroplane can be a bit pricey. And sharks. Weather’s usually nice, though.

PersonaNonGarter · 20/08/2019 06:17

YABU. You are on holiday, using local facilities and driving/parking near these beaches. Pay the money. That’s how they pay for tidying up for your holiday.

Al2O3 · 20/08/2019 06:25

Learn to sail. Buy a yacht. You can anchor in one of the myriad of bays and there’s normally plenty of spaces.

Reastie · 20/08/2019 06:31

Get there early and get street parking or go somewhere to park and walk on the coast path to a quieter beach. Last summer we parked in a quiet street with free parking in looe and walked half an hour or so to a beach along the coast path to a beach unachievable by roads. Did the same with parking in nt car parks, will just try and look and see if I can be more specific re looe.

Reastie · 20/08/2019 06:34

I think this is where we parked in looe. Was a lovely beach along the coast path there.

@littlebitbroken I don’t live in the Home Counties and I don’t own a second home in Cornwall.

Thanks for the helpful photos and suggestions everyone!

Hi OP, I live in the Falmouth surrounding area, and Fenwick Road (round the corner from Gylly) usually has space to park if you get there early enough. Hope this tip helps!

(On the other hand, being a local means I am obviously honour bound to be irritated and disgusted by your presence during tourist season, but I won’t tell if you won’t!)

Reastie · 20/08/2019 07:48

Op re my picture, we walked along the path from the pic away from the direction of the town not towards town.
