To think that The Queen would have been queen anyway?

After watching a programme about Edward Viii, I started to think that even if he had become King and been allowed to marry Wallis Simpson, they wouldn't have had children, so the queen would have become queen anyway?

I suppose they might have had children if things had been different, we couldn't say for certain.

Even if Ed VIII and Wallis hadn't had children, Elizabeth would have become Queen a lot later (assuming that Edward's lifespan wasn't shortened by becoming King) as he didn't die until 1972.

The likelihood of a son being born to either Edward or George would have been unlikely but not impossible. George died sooner than anyone anticipated but he wasn’t that young. So realistically, the queen would always have become the queen at some point!

ScreamingValenta · 19/08/2019 17:18

Here is a theoretical possibility -

George VI became King in 1936, at which point QE his wife would still have had childbearing years left. George reputedly hated being King. It's possible this might have influenced him not to have any more children. If Edward had remained King, George might have had a son who would have displaced QE11 from inheriting.

Therefore we could have had Edward VIII till 1972 and would currently have either King ? who'd now be in his early 80s, or King/Queen ?? - niece/nephew of Elizabeth - if King ? hadn't lived that long.

Impossible to say for certain.

Wallis Simpson had no children with her previous two husbands. Assuming they were not gay or asexual, reasonable to assume that Edward VIII would not have had children with her, so Elizabeth II would have become Queen in 1972.

I'm sure i read somewhere Wallis Simpson wasent able to have children?

ScreamingValenta · 19/08/2019 17:43

Though it's faintly possible, ForalltheSaints that Edward and Wallis might have had a child if he'd stayed King, because they wanted their 'line' to inherit the throne, rather than its reverting to the family members they'd fallen out with. Of course, on the other hand, Wallis might not have been (in modern parlance) childfree by choice - she might have been unable to conceive.

One of the 'solutions' to Edward VIII marrying Mrs SImpson was that the marriage would be morganatic, any children they had would not be in line of succession.
There have been all kinds of stories about Mrs Simpson's lack of children in her previous marriages, she was thought to be of mixed sexuality.
Like may things, we have to accept we will never know!
