Short Skirts

So DCs school has a new headteacher coming in in September. The uniform has stayed the same apart from the blazer getting a makeover and becoming a bit posher Grin

However, the uniform used to be fairly optional as long as a blouse/shirt, school jumper and black shoes/trainers were worn you didn’t have to wear the blazer. Now the new head has sent booklets home to all families with information.

He’s changed the skirt rule. The former head was a proud feminist and said girls and boys can wear skirts or trousers, it was totally up to them and the skirt used to be fine as long as you couldn’t see their underwear! I would say 99% of the students really did respect this rule end wore suitable length (for school) skirts.

Now the new head has abolished trousers for girls and skirts for boys. Girls skirts must come below the knee and if seen higher, an hour detention is the immediate punishment. His reasoning? ‘X is a professional site in which all students must aspire to learn and we must all endure we don’t distract other students by our attire’ He’s evidently stating that shorter skirts distract boys Grin and that girls must be responsible for boys behaviour.

I also have a DS at the school and it says on his booklet it states that if boys are seen with their trousers hanging down so underwear can be seen, they are put in for a 45 minute detention?

Aibu to think this is blatantly sexism and to think about complaining? I’m not usually one to get on the schools’ back as I know they’re underfunded etc but this is ridiculous in my eyes and the eyes of DDs and peers.

Unreasonable not to allow trousers, reasonable about skirt length, though to look smart not because teenage boys can be perverts or gawp.

Rethymnon · 19/08/2019 10:12

Sure send a photo of the “tights rule” then?

JasperTheFriendlyGhost · 19/08/2019 10:12

Actually Rethy there is a private school local to me that doesn’t allow tights. Skirts going just above the knee and socks coming up just under the knee.

malibuloving · 19/08/2019 10:15

@jasper

Yes exactly, they do exist. Perhaps only in indies or grammars or academies? And I’ll send you a photo on PM as I don’t know if I’ll be able to crop the name out of the school

Also weird that the girls' detention is longer than the boys!

Josephinebettany · 19/08/2019 10:18

What is a uniform troll?

Josephinebettany · 19/08/2019 10:18

Someone who starts threads about uniforms? That's so weird

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 19/08/2019 10:20

Not allowing girls to wear trousers is the norm around here. In fact I don’t think ANY of the secondary schools around here allow girls to wear trousers before sixth form (and some not even then).

Skirt length can be problematic. DD had to have a very specific, available from one place only skirt. She was/is very slim so even in year 11 she needed the smallest waist skirt which was designed for 10 year olds so was a bit too short. The only other option was to buy a larger skirt and then get it taken (a pleated and embroidered skirt). Fortunately the school were fine so long as skirt wasn’t at risk of showing underwear and she always wore opaque tights anyway.

malibuloving · 19/08/2019 10:21

@josephine

Someone up the thread mentioned them and thought I was them. I think that they are someone who makes fake accounts to discuss uniform?

Similar to the popular troll perhaps

and yes it is weird and horrible @DerelictWreck DS says it’s probably because boys have longer detentions for other things but god knows what those other things are Grin

YouOkHunz · 19/08/2019 10:23

We creepy a uniform troll?? Gross! Get your kicks elsewhere dirty person (hopefully not you OP) anyway unless we're still in the 1960s there is no fucking way I would be told my daughter cannot wear tights (especially when cold) or trousers. Absolutely ridiculous. In this day and age of LQBTQ+ there is no place for this attitude.

malibuloving · 19/08/2019 10:24

Fucking hell @YouOkHunz
Not hopefully, I’m definitely not the uniform troll. That’s literally why I reported my post!! And yes I agree totally

OP posts:
FluffyHippo · 19/08/2019 10:25

YouOkHunz, what has 'LQBTQ+ ' got to do with this issue?

Clothes don't define someone's sex, you muppet!

FluffyHippo · 19/08/2019 10:25

And it's transphobic of you to assume that...

AnyaMumsnet · 19/08/2019 10:25

Hi there all,

We've had a good look behind the scenes and we have no reason to suspect OP is a troll, so please do stop with the troll hunting.

As always, if you have suspicions report it to us and we'll take a look.

YouOkHunz · 19/08/2019 10:26

Hmm that people can be and do and wear whatever the hell they want these days and thats the new norm. Being told you have to be a "girl" and wear a skirt doesn't fit with the modern world.

malibuloving · 19/08/2019 10:26

Wait hang on? Who was being transphobic

OP posts:
CruCru · 19/08/2019 10:26

A while back, there was a plimsoll troll (basically someone who repeatedly started threads about how much better it would be if children all wore plimsolls to school).

There’s also a thread going for parents of children who play musical instruments - only really interesting to people for whom it’s relevant. That gets trolled too (God know why).

I’m sure that you’re not either of those, OP.

malibuloving · 19/08/2019 10:27

@AnyaMumsnet Thank you very much Smile

@YouOkHunz They are girls though, they aren’t told that? If they identify as boys then that’s another issue entirely

OP posts:
CruCru · 19/08/2019 10:28

Anyway, back to the main topic.

I find it quite creepy that the girls are being held responsible for “not distracting others” but are not allowed to make absolutely sure that their legs are covered.

Bookworm4 · 19/08/2019 10:29

I do agree with the boys not having half their underwear hanging out, horrible look.

@Rethymnon

It’s all good, I understand why you don’t want to take chances and as a mother I feel the exact same way

hmm that people can be and do and wear whatever the hell they want these days and thats the new norm.

Except that in a lot of work places you have to wear either a uniform or there is a dress code.
