To wonder if the reports about the consequences of No Deal Brexit are making the slight st difference to those who support it

Just that really.

I’ve long thought the only way ahead now is No Deal and prove what the consequences are.

If it’s all rosey I’ll happily admit I was wrong, but there’s nothing whatsoever to indicate that will be the case.

Everything that comes out about No Deal Brexit talks about things ‘not being that bad’ and that includes from the government who are determined to deliver it.

So far from being a great opportunity for the UK, it’s about damage limitation yet that still doesn’t seem to bother those who support it.

At what point, if any, would they think this is the wrong move?

It is a cult now unfortunately.

HappydaysArehere · 18/08/2019 19:04

It’s cognitive dissonance. It’s self justification.

Bearbehind · 18/08/2019 19:05

Cult is the best description for this.

Logic and reasoning has long gone out of the window in favour of some mythical Utopia.

Livelovebehappy · 18/08/2019 19:05

How can anyone say it’s going to be rosey? Or not? We’re going into the unknown, so we can’t predict but only hope that it will be ‘rosey’. So a bit of an irrelevant question.

catgirl1976 · 18/08/2019 19:06

Yup. They’ll be hunting rats with sticks for food, jubilant that they’ve “taken back control”.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/08/2019 19:08

How can anyone say it’s going to be rosey?

Basically no countries on the face of the earth choose to exit wealthy and influential trading blocs with no plans. So no, rosy is really unlikely.

My parents say that their leavers friends have become very very quiet. I think that's what's going to happen.

NailsNeedDoing · 18/08/2019 19:09

I don't think they will ever think it was the wrong move. And if they have to suffer any consequences, they will blame the government for not doing Brexit right, it won't be the fault of Brexit itself. They are small minded, insular people - that is one thing that unfortunately, Brexit won't change.

Bearbehind · 18/08/2019 19:09

There is literally nothing in life where you can say the outcome of your actions is completely unknown.

You take into account the facts and can predict the possible outcomes.
This is no different.

And no one predicts an entirely positive outcome given the circumstances, not even those who are trying to deliver it.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 18/08/2019 19:20

If it all goes to shit they will find something else to blame it on.

Like the supposed forthcoming global recession.

Grasspigeons · 18/08/2019 19:23

My relatives that voted to leave believe that the EU is causing the problems with leaving not the actual leaving if that makes sense. They see it as further evidence that the EU is terrible.

longwayoff · 18/08/2019 19:36

Nobody likes to admit they were wrong, wrong and stupid is a step too far. Brexiters will continue insisting on the rightness of their actions and every mishap will, of course, be the fault of other people. Operation Yellowhammer (little bit of bread and no cheese) post Brexit planning, is simply more 'scaremongering' by those who don't believe enough. Need Cultbusters for the brainwashed.

Ohflippineck · 18/08/2019 19:53

Grasspigeons

“My relatives that voted to leave believe that the EU is causing the problems with leaving not the actual leaving if that makes sense. They see it as further evidence that the EU is terrible.”

This.
Bozo, Gove, Francois (shudders), Rees-Mogg (shudders even more violently) and their behind the scenes, unelected puppet master started cranking up the blame the EU if we have to crash out handle weeks ago.
Bozo has been spouting his “million to one unless the EU won’t play ball” crap increasingly fervently for a good couple of weeks now in anticipation of the shite hitting the fan. They know we’re heading for disaster, so what to do? Blame the fiendish EU, of course. WTF 27 countries should make concessions and risk peace on the Irish/Northern Irish borders when “we” voted for this abomination has yet to be explained by any of them. But what the hell, shout even louder, wave the flag more wildly even as 1,000s lose their jobs and keep kissing Trump’s orange behind in the hope of this magical trade deal that the majority of senators have already said will not come to fruition if the backstop is removed. The idiots who voted for this will just shove their heads even further up their collective arse, stick their fingers in their ears, yell Rule Britannia and venture once more into the breach. Because they’re British. And Britain rules the waves. Yeah, good luck with that.
I’m astonished at the EU’s cohesion, fortitude and patience. I would have told us to f**k off a long time ago.

Iggly · 18/08/2019 19:57

A lot of people who voted leave, IMO, did so because they were scared of immigration and angry about the lack of opportunity.

There is a twisted logic to their views. It’s twisted IMO because it’s based on prejudice and misunderstanding.

I’ve deliberately challenged myself to read the arguments for leave and really delve into them. I’ve come to the conclusion that yes the EU is flawed and yes it actually serves the likes of banks and financial institutions and corporates - all to the detriment of most of the population. But that’s a reflection of everything that’s wrong with western capitalism and leaving the EU will not change that at all.

PinkiOcelot · 18/08/2019 19:59

Not another one of these crappy, boring threads. Yawn emoji!

Bearbehind · 18/08/2019 20:00

It’s absolutely guaranteed that those who chose this are always going to blame the EU and anyone else but themselves, but blame doesn’t help anyone.

I really want to know at what point people, who want it now, will start to disagree with no deal Brexit.

I suspect it’s the second it hits their pocket.

longwayoff

Little bit of bread and no cheese. That takes me back 😁 fear not, longwayoff, we’ll be awash, force fed indeed, with the many tonnes of beef and lamb that the government will be buying from our farmers but have nowhere to store. Rancid steak anyone? Yum yum. Calories, we are told, are what will count. What’s that I hear you say? Heart disease, high blood pressure? Phooey! The NHS (such as it will be) is for wimps. Paleo is good for you. Until you’re 35 and die of scurvy.
The irony of one department buying up all of the flesh whilst one of their select committees is advising the public that for the good of the planet we must all eat more vegetables, when we will not be able to buy said vegetables for love nor money, seems to have escaped our esteemed leaders entirely.

HalfDeadHousePlant · 18/08/2019 20:01

Ohflippineck Excellent post.

zackly · 18/08/2019 20:04

Well said @iggly. The EU is far from perfect, but the same can be said of just about any government/institution/organisation.

StealthPolarBear · 18/08/2019 20:12

"And no one predicts an entirely positive outcome given the circumstances,"
That's simply not true. Rees mogg predicted rainbows and unicorns that shit glitter. We have to wait until some time around 2065, but then it will all be worth it. You'll see. If you're not dead.

BigFatLiar · 18/08/2019 20:29

We'll find out after we've left. However when we leave we can't expect the EU to bend over backwards for us. If there's no agreement its not their fault that we don't get our way, thats childish.

We're leaving, we live with the consequences good or bad.

Kazooboohoo · 18/08/2019 20:49

Yuk. Yuk. Yuk.

Look, I get it, I voted Remain, I don't think leaving is a good idea; I think leaving with no deal is a worse idea. But to sit there, a smug Remain voter and saying "I say this is going to work, I told you so, you're all dupes" is just the way to make Leave voters drive further into their shells.

The smug utter cuntery of Remoaners (which is not synonymous with Remain voters), adamant all Leave voters are part of a cult, they're all uneducated, they were all conned by the Russians, they're all thick twats who'll soon be hunting for rats, and all this sheer fuckign smuggery makes me (a Remain voter) want to lamp the next Remoaner in the face.

There's an argument to be made for Remain; but "all Leave voters are thick and were conned by Russian propaganda" isn't it. "Aren't we Remainers all so fucking superior, and our farts smell of rainbows and sunflowers" isn't it either.

Bravelurker · 18/08/2019 20:51

I read a quote from a Trump supporter on another site and they said 'I voted for chaos, the system works for you but not me'. So there's that Confused.

ilovesooty · 18/08/2019 20:54

No it won't make any difference. Many Leave voters are just dismissing this as more fake news.

Camomila · 18/08/2019 21:01

Cognitive dissonance is right
on one hand we're being told eat local, eat more veg it's good for the planet and on the other dw we'll get cheap trade deals from the other side of the planet and eat lots of lamb.

What I don't get is why Johnson will think the EU will blink, sure it'll be uncomfortable for them but they'll still have medications and vegetables. They're going to be a lot less uncomfortable than the UK.

Cinammoncake · 18/08/2019 21:02

They will try not to take responsibility for it. But in the end, they'll have to, as its not the fault of the EU/ remain voters/ rest of the world.

Some people were definitely misled. Others are still saying it will be okay with no evidence that we will be better off than before only soundbites about remoaners and so on, as if people aren't entitled to be upset that their quality of life will go hugely downwards and their country wrecked.
