Do you smell fishy when you eat fish ?

Posting for traffic but a genuine question

When you eat fish, do you smell it for the next few hours / days ?

I eat relatively healthy and I enjoy eating fresh fish as often as I can, however since I can remember I’ve always had an issue with smelling fishy for days after ? It’s not much of an issue when I eat pink fish like salmon, trout or tuna but when I eat Cod or sea bass or something it’s there.

I smell it when I sweat and it’s extremely noticeable when I go to the toilet 😳 so much that last week I had to escape work early as another colleague I sit within smelling distance kept asking if I smell fish...

Sorry if this seems fake and disgusting but I’m genuinely curious if other people have this problem or weather I should mention it to my doctor.

I don’t smell in general and shower once or twice (after gym and work) a day.

It doesn’t happen when I eat other foods (as in I don’t smell of spices if I’ve eaten spicy food or smell of onions if I’ve eaten a lot) but the fish always rears it’s ugly head.

There is a medical condition that emits a fishy smell

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 18/08/2019 18:23

Hmm no. I was going to say that I only eat cod and things and not pink fish really, but if it's white fish that you think is causing it; I don't have it!

Has it always been a thing? I hate the smell of fish the next day if I haven't washed up or something, I couldn't cope with me smelling like it.

SistersOfMerci · 18/08/2019 18:25

Yep, I never used to but it started happening to me about the time the menopausal hormone changes started.

ShirleyPhallus · 18/08/2019 18:26

The only time I smell fishy is if I eat oily fish like mackerel and then have to change drinking glasses as I can really smell it on that

Cod is such a mild fish that it sounds like perhaps a visit to the dr is in order

AlmostAJillSandwich · 18/08/2019 18:28

Trimethylamine, which has a fishy odor, is produced in the intestines when certain types of food (i.e. eggs, liver, legumes, fish and some vegetables) are digested. As trimethylamine begins to accumulate in the body, it is released in the sweat, urine, reproductive fluids, and breath.

Totally normal

whattodowith · 18/08/2019 18:31

Yep! Onions do the same thing Confused. I’m a long way away from menopause, I first noticed it when I was 22 so it’s been happening for a few years.

CTRL · 18/08/2019 18:32

Thanks ladies
I know of the condition that makes you smell fishy but I don’t think I have that.

In general I smell quite fresh. I have high grooming standards and I’m always working with people so make sure I’m clean and presentable and so on.

The smell only comes when I eat white fish. Example Friday night I had fish and chips for dinner, today I could smell a faint fishy smell. I’ve gone to the bathroom and low and behold the smell is me - lukily I’m home so I’m going to shower (second today but I have to as I smell myself) but still I’m not sure how normal it is.

I mean the smell is enough for me to smell so I know others will smell me too. It’s disgusting to even think about but I smell it when I sit down or stand up or if I’m sitting in a way that my legs open 😳 can’t quite believe I’m writing this lol

The smell will be gone by tomorrow but I do love eating fish and I honestly don’t want to stop. I don’t want to smell like billingsgate market either Blush

Luckily I’m single and have been for years so nobody else has ever picked up on the smell but I know it’s there when I eat

How weird.
I dint think I smell of fish but our house does for days if someone has cooked fish in it.
For this reason I have banned it from the kitchen and we cook it outside. Blush

MunchMunch · 18/08/2019 18:47

Yes, only when I've had fish though. I've mentioned it before on here. I only eat fish from the chip shop or tuna but I'm fine with tuna.

Yabadee · 18/08/2019 18:47

I get this too! Every single time I have a fish supper from chipper. I don’t eat a lot of fish so I know it’s defo this.

I no longer have a large bowel and have a bag so thought it had something to do with that somehow

eyeswideshit · 18/08/2019 18:49

Yes I do, as do all my family. I think I read somewhere that it's genetic. Lasts a couple of days after eating fish

QueenOfPain · 18/08/2019 18:53

If I eat loads of fresh garlic I get garlicky vag for a few days afterwards. No idea why.

I’ve never eaten any kind of fish or seafood in my life so no idea if the same would happen with that.

PositiveVibez · 18/08/2019 18:54

Yes, if I have fish, which I love, then my pee stinks of it.

My husband and daughter don't like it, so I don't buy it very often.

The smell is very strong if it's smoked.

OneStepSideways · 18/08/2019 19:05

Completely normal for many people, it's common to lack the enzyme that breaks down some of the compounds in fish so the smell gets excreted in sweat, vaginal fluids, urine etc.

In your case I think I'd stop eating cod and seabass, or at least on nights you have work the next day!

As you have high standards of grooming you probably notice it more than people who don't shower/groom as often. A lot of people seem oblivious to how they smell or just don't care.

You could try cooking the fish differently e.g. marinating in lots of ginger/lemon/garlic to see if that reduces or changes the smell?

WhoReallyCares · 18/08/2019 19:14

YES! Whenever I eat cod I absolutely stink "down there" the next day. I'm fine with tuna.

I have to make a mental note not to eat fish the day before if my FWB and I are spending the night together 🤣

CTRL · 18/08/2019 19:38

@WhoReallyCares exactly !

I was about to call my FWB but think I’m going to have to make it another night Grin😅

Thanks ladies. Glad to know I’m not alone and it’s relatively normal.

Think I’m going to have to cut down eating during the week though

ClashCityRocker · 18/08/2019 19:44

Yup, I get it with fish too.

And also with curry.

northernknickers · 18/08/2019 20:27

I noticed this for the first time last week after having fish and chips on holiday...I'm going through the menopause, which having read comments on here just now, could explain it! Glad it's not just me...and that apparently there's a reason!

DracarysThis · 18/08/2019 20:52

What was the name of the film where a bunch of schoolgirls sat whispering "fishy fanny" over and over? I think it was about two girls, and they killed one of the girls' mother. Not with fishy fanny, obvs.

PinkyPrincessy · 18/08/2019 21:52

OP are you me? I was going to come and ask this!

I smell it, ahem, down below 🙈 but only after I’ve eaten fish, no other time
