To think I can do something with my body in 10 months

Hi! I’ve been invited to celebrate my friends birthday in Spin next June. It’s a five day trio in the sun and I am wondering what can I do to transform
My body in that time as I am uncomfortable in my own skin at the moment. After a stodgy summer I am a wobbly but proportioned size 14 . I really have no idea where to start. I’ve never been to a gym and walk now and again but no regular exercise ! Any experts able to help me please

I did low carb from Sept - July for a trip back to the uk for a wedding. Started running Jan four times a week. I was a toned size 12 for the wedding instead of a wobbly 16.

For me it was a combination of 16:8 intermittent fasting, running, yoga and some strength training that worked. Sounds like a lot but it's not. Transformed my body in about 2 months.

10 months is loads of time!

There is a really helpful YouTuber - Jessica Smith - she has loads of exercise vids. All free, there are some for beginners, some harder, some long, short. Some for particular areas of the body.

I would also look at meal prepping - it's just so you don't give up on healthy meals so easily & reach for ready meals, takeaway etc if you know there's at least the bones of a healthy meal already in the fridge. No matter what diet you choose, it helps to be prepared.

No, YDNBU - it’s totally possible to make a big difference in 10 months!

Key is to find stuff that works for you and stay as consistent as you can - if you have a wobble or a treaty weekend, don’t throw your hands up, just start again the next day and keep at it.

Exercise is really important, but 90% of it is about what you eat. Obvs you need to get rid of junk - empty calories in stuff like fizzy drinks, all sugary sweet stuff, crisps, fatty fried foods - and try to limit alcohol etc. For me, cutting down carbs is always the thing that makes an immediate difference. I dump almost all bread, pasta, rice, potatoes. For meals where I have any of that stuff, it’s always brown/wholemeal, small portion. And Zero noodles are brilliant!

I just have a nice piece of meat or fish and double up on veg and salad - there’s loads of lovely recipes, and you can have unlimited amounts. Maybe with some beans or grains. Always have a nice dressing, mayo, etc. Including healthy fats is important - olive oil, avocados, nuts, full fat Greek yoghurt with berries - as they help fill you up and absorb certain vitamins. Drink loads of water, or fizzy with a bit of lime or lemon.

Intermittent fasting is also helpful if it suits you. I don’t like the 5:2 thing, but I’ll often try to leave at least 12 hrs between my evening meal and breakfast/brunch next day. Doesn’t suit everyone though. And def don’t bother with any low fat or diet products - they’re shite and usually full of sugar.

With exercise, I’d start Pilates with a good teacher ASAP - great for increasing core strength, improving posture, balance & flexibility and giving you long, lean muscle. Stuff like Zumba is fun if you like a class, and when you’re ready add in some HIIT to help you burn fat and tone up (would recommend doing a class until you’re confident with shape & form & not going to hurt yourself, then there’s loads of excellent free stuff on YouTube).

Good luck - I really hope you have a lovely time in Spain!

I've lost 40lbs so far this year with the Noom app, and I do Boxercise and a fitness class called Mum Dance, which is brilliant.

Sorry OP, just re-read and you’ve been asking for online fitness recommendations which only one person has replied to. I just wanted to say that if you can afford to go to an actual class, preferably a smallish one, it’s probably the best place to start.

Unfortunately there are lots of poor quality teachers out there IRL as well as online, so ask around locally to find the ones with best word of mouth. When you’re starting to exercise from scratch it makes a huge difference to have someone correcting your body position, esp when you’re doing core and muscle toning. Bad technique not only means you’re unlikely to see results, but could lead to injury. And exercising at home can make it harder to motivate yourself to do it regularly and really put the effort in where it’s needed.

Having said that, I know classes can be pricey & may not be an option for you. I can’t advise on good online resources for beginners but I’m sure more people will be along who can!
