To not want to go on a hot holiday again

Because what I assume is heat rash has ruined it for me? I have spent just about every night and part of the day scratching myself like some demented chimp. As a result I’m tired and grumpy. It’s not even that hot, probably about 28 degrees. I look round the pool at other smooth glistening tanned folk and I’m so envious. I’m just not made for heat am I? How do others cope with it.

Looks like prickly heat OP. I suffered badly with it as a child. It's when your pores get blocked (suncream/sweat) mine got do bad it felt like a needle was stabbing me in every pore.

Don't stretch try to pat it if it itches. (Easier said that done I know) Try taking some antihistamines, have a shower if possible every time before putting a new layer of suncream on and try and lie in the shade for a bit as well to cool your skin down. That works for me, I don't get it anymore. An ice pack (over s tea towel not direct on the skin) will help cool the skin cool too.

origamiunicorn · 17/08/2019 07:37

Also if you have aloe Vera gel, that cools the skin and stops infection (from stratching) Smile

delilahbucket · 17/08/2019 07:37

Shower twice a day minimum. Layering up products on my skin guarantees a heat rash for me.

RedSheep73 · 17/08/2019 07:37

It's not compulsory is it? Just don't go somewhere hot.

SnuggyBuggy · 17/08/2019 07:39

You need to wear breathable fabrics but yeah the constant suncream doesn't help either.

stucknoue · 17/08/2019 07:39

I started to get this as a young adult, turned out I was allergic to the sunscreen. I switched to a children's hypoallergenic formula and I can cope with sun again though I still prefer a cooler weather trip!

CallMeOnMyCell · 17/08/2019 07:43

Nope YANBU, I used to love the heat on holiday abroad but now I just find it hard work.

JustDanceAddict · 17/08/2019 07:44

I don’t cope well with being in the sun so I generally sit in the shade with high factor sunscreen on. I prefer a sightseeing holiday as I’m not directly in sun but DCs like to chill too.
I’ve always been jealous of the tanned bodies!!!

Minimamame · 17/08/2019 07:44

I had it a lot as a child and now as an adult I have polymorphic light eruption which is a similar rash caused by heat. I get an antihistamine prescribed by my gp so it’s stronger than an over-the-counter one and I take that from May to September every year. Aloe Vera and /or coconut oil help the itching too. It’s miserable I know.

ToTryThisJustOnce · 17/08/2019 07:45

Two words: climate change. None of us should be going on these holidays anymore. Or flying.

CaramelEmporium · 17/08/2019 07:49

Of course it’s not compulsory **RedSheep73 but I don’t want to deprive the rest of the family a sunny holiday and 2 weeks in the sun is ‘the norm’ isn’t it. But I’ve been bloody miserable with it this year. I suppose my AIBU should have been more about asking for tips on how to cope.

Confused Not what the OP was asking but ok. Hope you don't drive a car.

magimedi · 17/08/2019 07:51

I used to suffer from the same thing. I now take a one a day non-drowsy anti-histamine for a week before I go & during the time I am away. I also use Piz Buin allergy sun cream (factor 30) & have not suffered again. Gave a friend the same advice & it worked for him too.

Yogagirl123 · 17/08/2019 07:52

You poor thing it’s horrible I know, I am very fair skinned and suffer with prickly heat, it may be worth changing the brand of your suntan lotion as I find some make the prickly heat worse.

magimedi · 17/08/2019 07:52

PS I also put on my sun cream when getting up in the morning, not waiting until I get to the beach/pool as I have heard that it takes 20 mins or so to start to work.

flamingjune123 · 17/08/2019 07:53

I developed similar but it mostly affected my chest area. It went on for he few years that I holidayed with the children in hot places. Once I stopped exposing my skin to the sun it disappeared. However at the time my skin would start of like yours but then develop into huge pustules. You have my greatest sympathy

barleyMuffining · 17/08/2019 07:56

Mines got better as I got older. But keeping in the shade, showering often, finding some air on......

yellowellies · 17/08/2019 07:57

We are in Southern Spain at the moment on a villa/pool/beach type holiday for the first time ever. It’s crap. Too hot and sweaty to do anything really, can do the pool for a couple of hours morning and evening but spending long long chunks of time in the afternoon just lying around inside in the air conditioning or going to shops for the air con too

Celebelly · 17/08/2019 08:07

Or have kids! Blows my mind how many sanctimonious twits there are on here who harp on about climate change and then you see them on another thread talking about their three children Grin

CaramelEmporium · 17/08/2019 08:07

Is it prickly heat? How can you tell? It doesn’t hurt/prickle it just itches like mad. I’m going for the morning shower and I’ve taken some pics so hopefully my GP might prescribe something stronger for next time. I am on antihistamines though admittedly only started once we were on holiday and they’ve not helped.

linentowel · 17/08/2019 08:09

Aw, prickly heat. I feel for you. When I get it it’s on my face!

I always take anti histamines for at least a week before I travel.

I use a serum usually with my moisturiser daily. That stops and I use Nivea sunscreen. Others seem to flare prickly heat.

For me it’s oil clogging my pores.

linentowel · 17/08/2019 08:09

It will take quite a few days to go down sadly.

BlueJava · 17/08/2019 08:13

I don't get it anymore (no idea why it stopped) but I used to take an anti-histamine every day from the start of the holiday. I also stayed in the shade where possible.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 17/08/2019 08:19

Piz buin hypoallergenic sun cream is a life saver with prickly heat. I buy it as soon as a fresh lot hits the shelves at the start of summer when they tend to be on offer

@Celebelly Blimey, pot, kettle. It really drives me mad. Every post there's some absolutel joy sucker on it. Someone has posted about what colour towels they should have with a grey bathroom and a reply is: Isn't grey out now 😂😂😂 I mean, what possesses people!
