AIBU to have regretted taken after morning pill?

Last night me and DH DTD unprotected. We always use protection so last night was really a once off.

I have just ovulated 2 days ago so knew if left to fate I would of been fertile enough for pregnancy so bought the morning after pill this morning and took it.

But now that I have taken the pill, I can’t help but feel like I will regret this decision and should of just left it in nature’s hands? I have been crying for the last half hour feeling beyond guilty for taking the pill...😥

Please mumsnet help me get my head straight, why would I regret it when we were never actively trying for a baby?

For reference we have 2 DD (3 and 4.5) if that makes a difference...

If you know you've ovulated the MAP isn't going to do anything. 🤨 There's nothing to regret other spending money and ingesting additional hormones.

Up to you of course, but if the thought of emergency contraception gives you regret you may want to rethink the contraception you are using to something that will work better for you.

Thanks for your input ladies. I hate taking hormone tablets and that’s probably why I feel guilty as I don’t put hormonal contraceptives in my body, we only use confine and have done so successfully for the last 6 years.

Ok so did research and spoke to a doctor and to the women saying it doesn’t work post ovulation, that is actually incorrect.

The MAP works in 3 ways:

  1. stop or delay ovulation
  2. Change the uterus lining to stop implantation of fertilised egg
  3. Change the CM to make it harder for sperm to fertilise the egg.

I just wanted to update the ladies as I think it is always good to be educated about contraception methods and also that if you do have an accident after ovulation you can still use MAP and it will still be effective...

Of course Yanbu it’s the way you feel and you can’t help that. Be kind to yourself and you can’t change the past but maybe think about if another child is really what you want.

I understand this feeling. We've finished our family and I'm happy with that decision. Still can't help that 'what if' feeling about having an unplanned 3rd. I know we are happy with the DC we have, but I suppose I like the idea of a third baby in some ways even though I know it's not the right thing for our family. Like if it happens it happens and I'd be ok with it but I can't justify actually planning a third iykwim.

It may work after ovulation, but it most definitely does not work after implantation. An IUD is a much more effective form of EC if you think you may have ovulated. The MAP is most effective before ovulation.

Will IUD work on a person with Crohn’s disease though? I have crohns and was told the best contraception for me is condoms and nothing hormonal?

Copper coil is hormone free.

mummyof2girls18 · 19/08/2019 07:45

Thank you for that, I will have to look into it as I always thought it had hormones!

Probably :
In your head you know you made the right decision
But in your heart you are sad, as you know there is not going to be any more babies after your 2 dd's and that this is it.

helpmum2003 · 19/08/2019 09:14

@mummyof2girls18 I'm afraid you've been informed incorrectly, I work in Sexual Health.
Both types of emergency hormonal contraception work by DELAYING OVULATION ONLY. Ella One is more effective than Levonelle.
The copper coil has a failure rate of 1/1000 as emergency contraception so is the best by far and is effective at any time of the month and should be considered for everyone especially mid cycle.
Without commenting on your case individually generally in people with Crohn's or UC we would not recommend pills due to absorption problems but either type of coil, injection or implant are great.
Unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation about contraception.
I agree there is a lack of availability for coil fits in many areas - tell your MP please. Funding for Sexual Health has been savaged. Often the local contraception/sexual health service can fit a coil quicker than a gp surgery. We will see anyone for an emergency coil as an extra.

Don't feel bad, but this might be a good prompt to talk to DH about if you want another?
