To buy a Sleepyhead Grande??

flashingliiiigghts · 16/08/2019 23:16

Dd (our first born) is nearly 6 months old and will be moving into her own room soon (sob)

She hasn’t given us a sleepless night since about she was about 5 weeks. She’s been in the sleepyhead deluxe from day one and I certain it’s because of this product.

I’ll be moving her into her own room soon. She’s already outgrowing the deluxe. I tried her without it and she didn’t really settle.

I never hear of anyone using the ‘grande’ - aibu to just buy this and continue with our sleepyhead addiction or does there come a point where a baby has to just adapt to a ‘normal’ bed/sleeping arrangement?!

I’m not fussed about travel inconveniences - it’s no problem afaic go check it in the hold when when we fly - but I just worry that I’m setting myself up for a huge fall when she outgrows this (age 3 I believe).

Anyone have any experience of the grande?

Both are a SIDS risk .

Florencenotflo · 16/08/2019 23:24

We had the same dilemma with DD1. She outgrew the deluxe at about 5 months. I couldn't justify the cost of the grande so had to go cold turkey!

In the long run it did us a favour, not having to take it with us when we travelled was a bonus and the grande is huge really!

It didn't take Dd long to get used to sleeping without it. I did have to settle her a few times to start with but she soon adjusted. If I were you I'd maybe try without for a week and see how you get on.

PotolBabu · 16/08/2019 23:25

I had it. It was great. At age 2 he stopped using it.

Florencenotflo · 16/08/2019 23:25

And @MyDcAreMarvel is right, neither products are now recommended by the lullaby trust for overnight sleeping. There was no such advice when I had dd1. I won't be using it for dd2 in a few weeks.

They should only be used when you are awake and supervising.

BridgeFarmKefir · 16/08/2019 23:26

We had a similar product and DD loved it. (Never completely wake up free mind!) We considered a larger version but once she started rolling lots in her sleep it hindered her more than helped. She sleeps fine now (10 mo) without, after a few rough nights when we finally removed it. I would try and see if your DD is ok without.

Champagne791 · 16/08/2019 23:30

My DDs love the sleepyhead too, they are dinky so slept in the newborn sleepyhead til 8 months, then I moved them into a cot and used ‘hippychick dream tubes’ a recommendations from Luisa Zissman, of all people - she made a post about it on her ig, if you want more info. DD transitioned seamlessly. Good luck op.

Celebelly · 16/08/2019 23:31

We just took the plunge as DD is outgrowing her Deluxe. I think it will still be useful, plus I found it for a lot of money off in a really random colour. She sleeps in her cot without it but we use it for naps together on bed or when her dad takes her in mornings so I can have a lie in. It's huge though! I wasn't really prepared for the size of it Grin

Celebelly · 16/08/2019 23:33

Oh and we just went cold turkey with removing Sleepyhead from cot at night and it went fine, but I wonder if when she's in her big girl cot (she's still in Next 2 Me so quite a snug space compared to a big cot) she'll be more unsettled with so much space around her. She's generally a good sleeper though.

StormcloakNord · 16/08/2019 23:34

I'd never heard of these, looked it up.

I'm a mega lax parent dont get me wrong but I'd never let my baby/toddler sleep in one of these?! Surely they're just glorified cot bumpers... they don't look particularly safe?!

Celebelly · 16/08/2019 23:43

There have been zero deaths attributed to them and they're made by a Swedish company and sold in Sweden, which has a lower rate of SIDs than the UK. Like everything I guess you do your own research and work out what you're comfortable with! We researched the heck out of it and were happy to use it. But then again some people are happy to forward face their one-year-old children in the car and I think that's insane so it's just about risk evaluation I suppose.

Florencenotflo · 16/08/2019 23:49

@StormcloakNord when I had Dd nearly 4 years ago my midwife mentioned them. And I'm sure (although I can't obviously find it now) it did have some sort of safety accreditation for overnight sleeping. But now the advice has changed.

It's interesting you say that @Celebelly I'd not realised that. I guess like you say, you make your own decisions about what you think is safe. I will do some more research, Dd loved hers and it did improve her sleep in the early days.

RachelEllenR · 16/08/2019 23:54

We didn't have the deluxe but my baby just stopped sleeping at almost 6 months when she outgrew the co sleeper. It was a total miracle worker for us and she loved it. We took it everywhere (including abroad) - stopped using it when she was 2.5 and it was fine.

LittleAndOften · 16/08/2019 23:57

We had a problem with ds's legs getting stuck between the cot bars, so we halved a pool noodle and cable tied it down each side. It's a similar principle to the sleepyhead but because it's not squishy fabric they can't bury their faces in it.

jgjgjgjgjg · 17/08/2019 00:24

Sleepyheads are named Dock A Tot in Canada and banned completely due to safety concerns

Nomoremilk · 17/08/2019 00:26

How dangerous. Yabvu.

Mummy3574 · 17/08/2019 00:49

They are supposed to be breathable. Our hospital used rolled up towels under sheets for all newborns and we just carried on using a sleepyhead.

We tried the Grande but when DS started rolling he looked less comfortable in it and we stopped.

strawbmilk · 17/08/2019 00:50

We bought a grande but she outgrew it by 18m as she was more comfortable sleeping when she could stretch out. We bought it second hand ad it was in perfect condition.
For easyJet the sleepyhead counts as a travel cot. We bought a bag on amazon for a tenner to keep it clean. We also could stuff other items in there to by pass baggage restrictions...blankets....a golf club 😂

flashingliiiigghts · 17/08/2019 18:45

Thanks everyone! On balance, I think I will get one. I’ll worry about weaning her off that when the time comes!

mlr1uk · 17/08/2019 18:46

I nearly bought one but in the end just put the inner tube of the sleepyhead under the bed sheet in the cot and it worked as a "bigger sleepyhead" until my child outgrew it

Blastnamechangeagain · 17/08/2019 18:59

SIDS risk and lullaby trust is advising against them.
DO NOT USE THEM !

Aria2015 · 17/08/2019 19:01

It's great. We got the grande and it’s been worth every penny!

ScaryBunnyPainting · 17/08/2019 19:08

I couldn’t sleep using one of those because of the SIDS risk.

frangipanflowers · 17/08/2019 19:09

Worth every penny? But a risk all the same. I wouldn’t.

Userzzzzz · 17/08/2019 19:11

I did with my first and will with my second. It fits in my travel cot so was never an issue when away. With my first, I kept her in the delux for a few weeks in the cot and then got the grande.

Enidthecat · 17/08/2019 19:11

Lullaby Trust recommends against using these. I use the deluxe for day naps under supervision but I wouldn't use it overnight. I think also I'd be concerned about using anything like this once they can sit up or roll.
