To think I shouldn’t have increased by this much?

Looking at renewing my car insurance for the 1st of October, in the process of moving address and my insurance has rocketed £180 for the year due to this! I can’t believe it! At my current address the renewal is coming out £180 less so I know it is the area.

Just had a quick scan on google to see if there’s anyway I can get around this increase - but to no avail. Anyone has any magic ideas haha?

I am gob smacked!

This happened to mine. They cited a higher risk area. 3 days later it was broken into and vandalised. Guess they were right!

This is a reason why I want it all to be above board I don’t want to tempt fate for the sake of a few extra quid a month!

I have quoted for my partner to be a named driver however he is provisional at the moment but want him to get use to the car for when he eventually passes

@Heartburn888 was he on your last policy?

That'll definitely increase your premium.

If he's not learning in your car, don't add him until necessary.

Heartburn888 · 16/08/2019 19:06

Yeah he’s on the policy now so I defo know it’s the area :(((( hard lines eh

What happens if you take him off the renewal?

coconuttelegraph · 16/08/2019 19:13

They wont just charge you an admin fee if you change address once the policy has started unless the premium isnt affected by the change.

They will re-work it out and you'll have to pay the difference

I moved from a “bad area” to a “good area” and my insurance went up too!

When I queried this with the insurer the lady said I was likely to crash into an expensive car now!!!

Not sure if that’s the truth, but in my small village and surrounding area there is a car theft almost nightly at minute..

My own car was stolen this year too. Perhaps there is a high rate of car related thefts?

JudgeRindersMinder · 16/08/2019 19:19

Check out learner driver policies. We were actually cheaper taking out a learner policy for ds to drive his dad’s car, rather than adding him to dh’s policy

bbcessex · 16/08/2019 19:25

Sympathies, OP, It's such a bummer to have to pay more, although the insurers formulas just do the maths. 😕

If you haven't already, definitely phone them to ask if they can reduce it.. I always do this and almost always you get at least something knocked off.

Last time we moved our insurance actually got cancelled as the insurer ‘didn’t cover our new postcode area’ - moving between 2 neighbouring London boroughs!

It is worth checking with one of the comparison sites though, and using that to negotiate with your current company if you like them, as others have said. DH saved £400 on our renewal quote last weekend after checking comparables and making a short phone call and felt epic

wonkylegs · 16/08/2019 19:45

When we moved DHs premium went up, mine went down
We were surprised because we went from a city centre location with onstreet parking to a rural village parked on the driveway....
thing is apparently 5years before we moved in there was a spate of high end car thefts every house in our little stretch of road was hit, all high end luxury / sports cars - clearly planned and quite sophisticated
DH's car was a luxury saloon, mine an ancient small hatchback
There have been no thefts since and a couple of years there was a sudden drop in all our premiums in the street as apparently it's no longer considered a risk area.

updownleftrightstart · 16/08/2019 20:22

I recently took out insurance (annual travel, not car though) and found the cheapest quote from all comparison sites. Then I went direct to that company and the price direct through them was a lot less than the comparison sites were quoting for an identical policy.

So maybe go direct to some of the cheapest companies featured on the comparison sites and see if there's a difference.

ginyogarepeat · 16/08/2019 20:23

This happened to us. Moving from a higher crime area where car was parked on the public road, to lower crime rural area, with private driveway and garage. Go figure!

Merryoldgoat · 16/08/2019 20:28

In terms of car budgeting, might I suggest a ‘car account’? We have one that we put £160 a month into - the balance waxes and wanes but I’ve been able to pay petrol as required, tax, MOT, service, unexpected repairs and insurance outright with no problem.

PTW1234 · 16/08/2019 20:30

@wonkylegs are you me?! This is exactly the same scenario as us!

We have gone from city Suburb to commuter village outside of town. All very high end cars, when we moved I had a very ancient hatch back too! So I was very shocked as it wasn’t really worth stealing...

I traded mine in for a mid range bmw, my insurance then went down, until we was burgled and now it’s an eye watering amount a year...
