Would I be asking for trouble if I did this?

Putting this here because I need traffic. Basically, I need to buy a new back door. A couple of my friends who have had no experience of making such a purchase warned me away from Anglian. However, I was quite impressed by the sell and quite frankly it's a good deal compared to other places. Question is do I trust my instinct and do it or should I shop around.

Depends on what their reasons were for warning you against it?

MelbaToast · 15/08/2019 19:38

I think the thought process is that they're cheap and therefore not good. They are quite cheap but not the cheapest and all their doors are guaranteed for 10 years (not even sure I'll be here that long).

Have you checked their price against buying the door yourself and paying someone to install it?

I'd never use any of those hard-sell fuckers - I know their tactics and they are entirely without ethics.

minibroncs · 15/08/2019 19:53

I assume they didn't explain to you that their inflated prices/fake discount system means you get overcharged if you only buy one door or window? The fake discounts don't kick in fully to bring the prices down to something close to market value unless you get multiple windows/doors.

You say you were impressed by their high pressure sales approach. Okay.

You are aware that the person who comes out to quote you and do the sales pitch has no technical competence as a surveyor? They're purely sales people on commission.

If you had asked any remotely technical questions that weren't covered by their memorised sales bullshit they would have had to phone up the office to find out the answer.

Have you even had anyone else out to compare to?

What do you think it says about their products and service that they rely on overinflated prices and made up "discounts" that expire once they end their appointment with you? Hmm

Buy from a firm that actually sends qualified surveyors out to do your quote. They will be so much more knowledgeable, won't bother with the high pressure sales bullshit, and will actually share useful information with you to help in your decision.

Not just tell you fifteen different ways how their products are the only burglar proof ones on the market... And all the other ridiculousness.

bloodywhitecat · 15/08/2019 19:56

I'd avoid Anglian too after a bad experience with them many moons ago.

minibroncs · 15/08/2019 20:02

Who else has quoted for you?

IfThisWasOurHouse · 15/08/2019 20:06

Sign up to which? For their £1 free month trial. They have a whole section on buying windows including reviews of the "big" companies. Then look at their which trusted traders and get a quote from them. Anglian are far too slick for me. We had them and Everest come out for a quote then 2 smaller independent firms from their trusted traders list

IfThisWasOurHouse · 15/08/2019 20:07

Went with the independent btw!

Lemoneeza · 15/08/2019 20:09

With the guarantees, check what's covered. Mine was ten years but on closer inspection the hinges are only two years Hmm
Guess what started warping just over a couple of years!

Raspberrytruffle · 15/08/2019 20:11

Don't they will gouge your eyes out for an inferior door. My brother who has his own business doing general builder work etc told me they get the same doors for a few hundred and these companies are charging over a grand for them.

MyFokMarelize · 15/08/2019 20:20

Everest's opening quote for a new front door for me was.... £13,000. No joke. Then all the fake phoning up of the boss, getting it down to £9000 and by the time we kicked him out it was £4000. For a fucking door.

Got it done by an independant for £900 and it's still perfect 11 years later.

Shenanagins · 15/08/2019 20:24

£13k for a new front door, do you stay at Buckingham Palace!

blahblahblahblahhh · 15/08/2019 20:31

Buy one yourself online and pay a builder to install it for you - will be much cheaper and you can get decent quality online much cheaper.

MyFokMarelize · 15/08/2019 20:35

Shenanigans Grin No sadly not. Ex council house in a relatively 'nice' area but nothing to suggest that £13k for a door would fly anywhere except straight to the dump!

AnnonniMoose · 15/08/2019 20:45

Above all, please avoid Zenith bloody windows, or whatever the fuck they're called now. They change their name so often because they're utter shite.

mumwon · 15/08/2019 20:56

don't use Everest dd used them they have franchise fitters & her were dire & didn't come when they said -so not only expensive but crap fitters!

adaline · 15/08/2019 21:01

Surely it's cheaper to buy a door and getting a local handyman to come and fit it for you?

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 15/08/2019 21:07

I had Anglian come out once to give me a quote for a door. My father happened to be around that day and was interestednosey old git. Whenever I asked a question the salesman replied to my father. Eventually I got fed up with his sexism and ask him to leave. He then apparently made a complaint about me to his company. Pathetic little twat

sackrifice · 15/08/2019 21:09

We have a handmade door which was made and fitted for £500.

If yours is a standard size, just buy one and get it fitted. Ours isn't hence having to be hand made.

SinkGirl · 15/08/2019 21:23

We had a visit from Zenith shortly after we moved in about our fascias - I agreed to an appointment because they do need doing. Did a bit of research first and found out roughly what it should cost.

The hard sell was absolutely ridiculous - oh it would be £10k but we want to 12 properties in your area at once and if we book in today they can get it down to £5k but he would have to call his boss right now because the spots are filling up 🙄

We told him to piss off. He was furious. Had they left a reasonable quote with us so we could get other quotes and get back to them (which I said I’d want to do before he even started) then maybe, but of course they won’t let you do this as they know what you’ll find as soon as you type their name into google.

Please tell me you haven’t signed anything?

FinalNameChange · 15/08/2019 21:26

"It's a good deal compared to other places."

No way. At the very least, talk to a LOCALLY based INDEPENDENT company that doesn't pay huge commission to salespeople like this.
