I lost control of my weight

Hi everyone!

I need a bit of help as I feel a bit lost. I know I need motivation and you lovely lot can't lose weight for me (I wish you did though!)

I'm 5ft2, and I weigh 64 kg. I gained weight (because of quitting smoking), about 7 kg. Ideally I need to get back to at least 54 (50 would be ideal) but I only eat crap, I'm an emotional eater and I barely go to the gym. I'm at my heaviest and I feel and look terrible (I used to weigh 48 kg when I was 20🤦‍♀️)

What's your motivation? How do I start again? How do I keep myself going? Please helpConfused

You're ten stone. I doubt very much that you look terrible.

Start by cutting down portion sizes, increasing your activity when you feel up to it.

I was talking with a friend about this last night. Friend used to be like 20 stone! She said she had started walking all the way up 10 flights of stairs to her office a couple of times a day.

I was saying that I reckon if I had built in walking up 5 flights to my office, my fitness would be a lot better!

To lose weight, you need to look at diet too as diet is where real weight loss happens, but you can build in small activity changes as well, which all add up over time.

The amount you’ve got to lose is not loads - but not nothing either. Could you start a food diary for a week, logging all you eat and drink, to identify your weak spots?

Have you thought about trying a fasting plan like 5:2? That really works for some people and one tends to see results quite quickly.

Good luck!

You’re hardly majorly overweight, but if you’re unhappy, the only advice I can give is to eat less crap and move a bit more

BazaarMum · 15/08/2019 19:15

I had 7kg to lose at the start of the summer hols, and have lost 4kg in three weeks. Low carb, calorie counted to around 1200 per day. No exercise apart from daily logistics.

5:2 would have similar results. There’s really no need to despair. You could get that off in six weeks!

BazaarMum · 15/08/2019 19:18

I think once you start to see results of your efforts it focuses the mind to continue. If you are going to put effort anywhere put it on diet. Exercise is obviously a great idea, and will enhance your efforts, but has far less affect on weight loss so don’t beat yourself up about the gym!

LaVieilleHarpie · 15/08/2019 19:19

Calorie counting. Meticulous calorie counting. Every taste, lick and bite accounted for. Food scales are your best friend. Good luck!

proseccoaficionado · 15/08/2019 19:26

I agree I might not be terribly overweight or in danger health wise but imagine from 50 kgs to 64 one's appearance (especially when 5ft2) changes drastically. I have a lot of clothes that don't fit me any more and a lot that barely fit me🤦‍♀️

I just looked up the 5:2. Looks amazing

Question: what do you do when you have cravings? How do you keep yourself going to the gym?

Oh and I'm just back from holidays, scared of the scales🤦‍♀️

The best diet is the one you can stick to. I struggle/d with over eating, emotional eating and binge eating and I now follow the low carb bootcamps on here. That was because the foods I was obsessed with were all junk carbs and I had no off button with them. If that sounds like you, check out the threads
Exercise is great and all but hasn’t nearly as much impact on weight loss as diet.

LaVieilleHarpie · 15/08/2019 19:35

Cravings are really something you need to learn to ignore. Takes time and discipline, but that's what it is. What is it you're craving? Can you try to snack on lower calorie options? Are you finding that you just want to graze on something, anything? Raw veg is quite good for that, I find. Yay carrot sticks.

Same with the gym - it just takes discipline. I am one of those people that hate to be inconvenienced in any way, and I absolutely hate all forms of physical exertion, but I just... talk and coax and coerce myself into working out 4 times a week. It actually takes a lot of coaxing. I tell myself that I'm doing something great for myself, and that my arse will look amazing, and just think how great I always feel after a goooood lifting session... and I get to pig out on tasty chicken breast after, all that protein! Mmm... tasty, tasty protein that will give me a cracking physique.

It's doable. It's not easy, but the inner glowy tingly feeling after a workout is WELL worth it.

(Oh and you get to eat a lot more without worrying about your waistline. That's the best part.)

SomeAfternoonDelight · 15/08/2019 19:55

I’m having the same feeling just weighed myself and I’m at my heaviest and people still say I’m tiny but their opinion on me is irrelevant, how I feel is absolutely shit. I feel you OP. I’ve just learnt EVERYTHING Is a fuxking calorie and I’m totally ticked off 😂

TakingARiskOrNot · 15/08/2019 19:57

Could you look at exercise classes local to you instead of the gym? I find I need the motivation of other people in a group helps. I do a circuits class one evening in the local church hall.

I also play in an amateur league one evening (www.leagues4you.co.uk/) you might find a sport you are interested in. It's just for fun, most people haven't played since school!

And eat less of course! I try to have an apple on my way home from work so I am not starving coming through the door and eat loads of toast.

I sympathise as I have put on about 2 stone over the last 15 years.

Beautiful3 · 15/08/2019 20:10

Same here. Put on 4 stone. Lost 1.5 stone so far. Got another 2.5 to go!! Using fruit smoothie and slime fast to get it all off quickly. Honestly don't know how it crept on, as i exercise every day and eat really healthily.

BazaarMum · 15/08/2019 20:56

You just have to ignore cravings and hunger for your next meal. Have a big glass of water and distract yourself. It’s about retraining your appetite. A bit of mild hunger won’t harm you.

proseccoaficionado · 16/08/2019 08:36

@TakingARiskOrNot I only go to classes because I find them better as I'm not alone (seeing others struggle too helps me😂).

Thanks for the apple tip, that sounds great
