To stop period for holiday?

14 replies

alliejay81 · 15/08/2019 07:37

I seem to get my period EVERY TIME we go on holiday. They tend to be quite heavy and make me a bit miserable. We about to go on a beach holiday and my period is due in the middle of it! Would I be unreasonable to ask the GP for something to delay the period? It seems a fairly non-essential ask (assuming there are drugs which do this)?

I did this last year for a wedding and again this year for a birthday.

Ask for norethisterone.

You usually take it 3 times a day from 3 days before your period starts and each day you want to delay your period.

I’ve found it really effective.

@00Sassy

Thank you. I will go to the GP and ask. Smile

YANBU, I had a chat with my gp about it last year, but probably worth checking them out in advance in case they have side effects such as low mood (I mean not trying them for the first time when you're already away)

delilahbucket · 15/08/2019 07:55

Totally not being unreasonable. I have recently gone back on the pill and not having to deal with my period on holiday is going to be absolute bliss.

Dr Hilary was on This Morning talking about this the other day - you can now by the tablets from Superdrug for £29 and can delay your period for as long as needed, no need to go to the doctor.

Justonemoremojito · 15/08/2019 08:04

I do it if needed, it norethesine or something like that, only thing to warn you about is my periods after are not very nice but the doc did warn me about that

00Sassy · 15/08/2019 08:05

@AmIThough

My GP did want to see me the first time to check my weight and blood pressure etc.

The second time I called expecting the same but just got a quick call back appointment from a GP at my practice who asked me how many I needed and sent the prescription to my local chemist.

I did this year, I took utovlan 3 times a day, 3 days before I was due until the end of holiday. I took it the day after too because I felt I needed a day to unpack and sort the house out without any added stress!

Hi OP - Boots have an online facility for getting the pill to stop periods, would save you a GPs visit. Smile

AmIThough · 15/08/2019 08:11

@00Sassy sorry, to clarify, they were saying you no longer need a prescription for the drug

I don't know how true that is but here's the online doctor link from Superdrug
I haven't clicked through so it may be that you do need to see GP for the first batch https://onlinedoctor.superdrug.com/norethisterone-tablets.html?utmsource=Superdrugmain&utmmmedium=referral&utmcampaign=serviceedropdown&utmcontent=periodd_delay

heydiddlediddle21 · 15/08/2019 08:34

I get it for most holidays as my period isn't regular, I usually just request it as a repeat prescription and never had a problem. It can make me moody tho.

alliejay81 · 15/08/2019 08:36

I'm so very excited about this! The more I think about it, the more I wonder why I haven't tried it before! Thank you all for your advice!

YANBU I really don’t know what the downside here is actually!

Laiste · 15/08/2019 08:52

YANBU
I've had to take them a few times. Honeymoon was one of them!!

However - OP be warned - my own experience is that all my usual symptoms (spots, hungry, emotional, bloated, and that horrible 'i hate me and the way i look' thing) still start when they usually would and hang around till you stop the pills and have the period. Bugger.
