To not pay this company any money

I posted a few weeks back about a terrible day I was having and a company that had emptied my bank account - luckily I was just short of the bill I owed so it was just an inconvenience as the direct debit bounced back but this was after I realised my account was empty whilst stood in the queue at the petrol station to pay for my fuel.

Anyway - this electric company has never sent me a bill despite asking several times. They refuse to set up a payment arrangement for me to clear this debt as my offering of £50 a month (which is all I can afford at the moment) is not enough. They want half of it paid up front no questions asked. Before it got to this point I rang to set up a direct debit but the agents I got through to were trying to set up the payment for the full amount and would not accept £60 a month while the debt was relatively low.

When I first moved into my (now previous) property they were charging me £8 per day under a commercial meter and despite several attempts
To have someone come out to rectify my meter and recalibrate it, if you will, this never happened.

They are now continuously attempting to take £433 out of my account every other day and have also set up 2 x monthly direct debits one for £48 and another for £50. I have rang, emailed you name it and no one rings me back to sort this out.

Am I unreasonable to not pay them a penny until they sort my account out? I have complained when I first used them and didn’t receive a final response within 8 weeks so passed to the energy ombudsman.

This company is called enstroga if anyone has used these? If not - don’t use them. Absolute cowboys.

If you don't get any joy with the above I'd go to see your M.P. I once had a lot of problems with something and a company fobbing me off and it got sorted out very quickly as soon as the M.P was involved.

Agree with contacting MP but weekend papers have sections dealing with this sort of thing.

You could try using: www.resolver.co.uk/
I’ve had several complaints sorted straight away by going through them

Make sure you have moving in and out readings, clear pictures of the meter serial numbers and proof of what payments you have made. If you have already contacted the ombudsman then inform them that they should not be contacting you until a decision has been made.

They should be able to tell you your account number and energy plan, with your readings you should be able to work out roughly what is owed.

Also post on MSE as there are experts on there although enstroga has terrible reviews.

Thanks for all your advice.

What would I say to my MP? I’m having an issue with a company and need some help sorting it?

I’ll also try that resolver, I have seen that when I’ve been googling complaints for enstroga.

If you moves just call the energy supplier that supplies your property and register with them.

Even if its pay as you go. Still register incase you need to call them usage or meter exchange etc.

Unless there is a smart meter they womt be able to give a full break down just meter reads that they have taken or you have given.

Your high usage is down to the commercial meter, larger price per unit.

You may be able to argue that down, as it wasnt a commercial property. But be prepared for them to say they wanted to change the meter and you dragged your feet.

They are cowboys and with try and twist ofgen/EO rules. Especially if they get the hint you dont know them.

Just tell the M.P what you have told us here.I'd complain to the Ombusdman and the other suggestions as well. If you go to you local library they will have a list of your M.Ps surgery times.

Hi.
10 years experience working for energy company.
You can’t be stopped moving suppliers on your current property if this relates to a previous property.
We’re you on a prepayment meter at the property the debt is against?
If not have you got a final bill with the meter readings as they were when you left, and ideally the meter readings as they were when you moved in?
8 pound a day is a huge amount, although if you had storage heaters and an immersion tank and either were faulty I’ve seen this happen and actually more.
First step is getting the billing history from them, broken down quarter by quarter. If they won’t provide that chase up the ombudsman. Tariff for businesses actually tend to be cheaper usually as they use more units but they also pay higher charges in other parts of bill.
Sounds like a mess and unless and until they provide u with a clear breakdown of usage don’t pay.
Only caveat is if they have passed the debt to a collector, if they have they won’t deal with you and the collectors don’t care about the details. If they have passed it offer them a smaller final amount to pay in one go (write to them and keep a copy, request a written reply)

Is it Scottish Power? We ended up having to go to the Ombudsman following cock up after cock up. Couldn't provide a prepayment meter, couldn't set us a direct debit up, never returned calls, never logged calls. Entered meter readings the wrong way round. Tried charging us £2500 for three months' gas & electric.
