To expect more as a goodwill gesture when in holiday rental for 2 days with no oven?

No oven yesterday or today - heating element seems to be gone - and I’ve bought food to cook for 3 days planning on eating out once on last night. Spent two hours last night trying to see what problem was googling instructions etc. Eventually called owner who kept saying couldn’t be broken as not old. After about 6 phone calls with her family plus / visits which took another 2 hours a sensible family member agreed yes broken. Now these things happen andI took kids for chips (cost £20). She was meant to get someone out today. No one came. One text and 2 calls later she says looks like they should come tmw. She had left a voucher round for dinner for tonight. We are 2 adults and 3 kids. What would you expect??

I probably wouldn’t have wanted to waste holiday time dealing with this so would have improvised and ended up using the hob, microwave or BBQ.

I wouldn’t have expected anything from the owner, and probably would have forgotten to mention it to them.

JemimaPuddlePeacock · 14/08/2019 19:17

She had left a voucher round for dinner for tonight.

Sorry, what does this even mean? She’s bringing a voucher round and you want people to suggest how much it should be worth? Or she’s already given you a voucher and you’re trying to get us to guess the amount?

CitadelsofScience · 14/08/2019 19:18

I'd expect to be reimbursed for the chip dinner and the full cost of tonight's dinner.

I certainly wouldn't be as accommodating as Scream seems to think you should be.

However we've been away and the oven was broken and I didn't push for a refund when I should've so I'm possibly projecting.

cushioncovers · 14/08/2019 19:20

What sort of voucher? Does the hob and microwave still work?

TidyDancer · 14/08/2019 19:21

Yes it depends on what cooking facilities they are otherwise.

apacketofcrisps · 14/08/2019 19:21

Could you not just use something else to cook/have cold type stuff?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 14/08/2019 19:22

How many nights are you there? I'd say a £50 reimbursement would be appropriate.

Can you freeze the stuff you brought to cook then use it when you get home?

CitadelsofScience · 14/08/2019 19:22

Sorry I don't think the hob or microwave still working has any bearing.

The Op could've bought food to be cooked in the oven, not on the hob or grilled.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 14/08/2019 19:25

If you'd planned meals and taken food based on a functional oven then I don't think it's reasonable to expect you to waste holiday time replanning the meals based on hobs only and shopping for the ingredients. I'd say the cost of takeaways for the duration would be a fair settlement.

BillieEilish · 14/08/2019 19:26

Where are you? I would not be putting the oven on in Spain right now!!

Agree with PP's, if you have hob then not really a problem.

She (owner) is resolving the problem. Doing her best.

GPatz · 14/08/2019 19:28

'I wouldn’t have expected anything from the owner, and probably would have forgotten to mention it to them'.

This is my favourite response ever.

BillieEilish · 14/08/2019 19:29

If you are in St Ives, different story Grin but takeaways all week, nope!

I can cook anything really, without an oven.

Frolie · 14/08/2019 19:30

We spent £6k on a Villa last year and the oven was broken for the entire holiday, as were the ceiling fans. Didn’t get a single ‘goodwill gesture’ from the villa company, so I think a dinner voucher is very nice of the owner to offer you.

herculepoirot2 · 14/08/2019 19:32

A four night stay with two nights without cooking facilities? I would expect reimbursement for two nights of dinner out as a minimum. What voucher did she leave?

Sorrysorrysosorry · 14/08/2019 19:38

How much was the voucher for? And was it for a full meal out or towards the cost of a meal out or for a takeaway?
I would be thinking that it was brilliant that I didn’t have to cook!

IceRebel · 14/08/2019 19:53

I would expect reimbursement for two nights of dinner out as a minimum.

I agree with this. Eating out for 5 will be more expensive, especially given you've already purchased food.

Bellsandwhistle · 14/08/2019 19:55

In Lake District. Can’t make do with job. No microwave. How do I cook a chicken pie on hob? Or a lasagne? Or oven chips for kids?
I paid for last nights chippy takeaway when I had perfectly good food there. Can’t freeze as journey home too long.
Don’t want takeaways all week amd I detest throwing out food!!
Voucher for £30 for 5 people. I though that was a bit mean myself. Didn’t get the £20 from last night.

Bellsandwhistle · 14/08/2019 19:55

Scream - are you the owner??!! 😂

OP posts:
Bellsandwhistle · 14/08/2019 20:00

I’d been happy with the £30 if she’d also paid the £20 from last night and would have made up difference myself. I’d planned food for 630 last night and ended up with kids waiting till 900 in the end. I thought last night was fair enough and was really nice saying these things happen. Tonight I’m a little annoyed as we’ve hiked all day and would have preferred to stay in and eat with a bottle of wine. Now have had to drive to restaurant where we are waiting 60 min on a table!!

OP posts:
Saucery · 14/08/2019 20:00

Be nice if they reimbursed you fully for the chippy tea and the voucher covered the true cost of a meal for 5. The Lakes (£30 is having a laugh tbh).
I’d probably leave it if the oven is fixed tomorrow though. Mark down in a review afterwards.

RaisinsRuinEverything · 14/08/2019 20:04

What a pain, that would spoil my holiday!
If the particulars say there is an oven then it should be working and the owner should compensate you!
How much was the voucher for? Does it cover the cost of the food that can only be cooked in the oven?
Can you make do with the hob and microwave until it’s fixed?

Beautiful3 · 14/08/2019 20:11

£50 would have been okay.

Bellsandwhistle · 14/08/2019 20:12

I thought £30 was them having a laugh. It might just about cover the cost of the food but I can’t replace for that. Made a pie and a lasagne, froze brought with me so I didn’t have to cook on holidays! Also there’s croissants for breakfast etc

OP posts:
SarahAndQuack · 14/08/2019 20:14

Well, it's annoying, but not the end of the world really.

I'd be more annoyed at the owner telling you it couldn't be broken and messing you around with people coming out, TBH. That's unprofessional and weird.

Bellsandwhistle · 14/08/2019 20:20

Yes I think that’s why I’m a bit underwhelmed as I felt she wasn’t believing me till she sent 3 family members round between 800- 1015 last night. Then I just assumed it was sorted today when I didn’t hear. Called at 5pm on way back from walk to be told eventually oh of he’s not come today it’ll hopefully be tmw. I found the whole thing unprofessional.
