To go to the doctor's because I've eaten too much salt and I think I'm dying

I feel awful.

I've been doing the keto diet for 2 weeks. Part of this is that you replace your electrolytes by drinking salt water, 1tsp dissolved in water. I've done this past 2 days then yesterday for lunch I had a whole packet of pork crackling that was incredibly salty (actually made me feel a bit sick) and then ham hock salad, which was a bit salty, then I had some edamame beans with soy sauce (also salty) I didn't consider this at the time.
When I got home I had sprouts and bacon - more salt.

Then developed the worst headache I've ever experienced at about 8pm, literally feels like my brain was throbbing. Dry mouth and thirsty so I drank a ton of water.

I woke up at 5am with my head throbbing and I could barely move, husband have me a co codamol, barely touched the headache. I still feel wobbly now, my head feels so heavy and throbbing, it's like no headache I've ever had.

Should I go to the doctor this morning?

I did Atkins a couple of months ago. Couldn't exercise normally as I have a slipped disc and the pain is indescribable. Thought I should crack on and lose weight quickly. At the end of Day 5 of endless protein, I was admitted to hospital with appendicitis. It may be coincidental, but I'm sure it was my body just having had enough of pain, painkillers and protein! Ironically, each time they tested my urine in the hospital, they mentioned the ketones!

Oh well, I had the surgery, ate toast, stopped Atkins and now back to Slimming World!

MyCatHatesEverybody · 14/08/2019 11:36

Why are some poster dissing keto because of what the the OP has done which is not actually part of the keto diet?

I've seen recipes for these home made "electrolyte" drinks but the context I've seen them in is when you're combining keto with intermittent fasting. A little bit of "knowledge" can be a dangerous thing.

ChicCroissant · 14/08/2019 11:37

Do you have form for this kind of thing, OP? Seeking a quick fix rather than making long-term changes?

ObtuseTriangle · 14/08/2019 11:41

I've been keto for a few months now. I have never really added any salt or any extra water. I just eat low carb veggies and protein. It is working for me as a pre-diabetic with a previously carb heavy diet. I would ask on your fb group for a local to you keto friendly GP and make an appointment if you can.

TatianaLarina · 14/08/2019 11:43

High protein diets are not actually very good for your kidneys.

A high protein diet is known to worsen kidney function in existing kidney disease. So CKD patients are advised to cut their protein intake.

Studies on healthy subjects - both humans and mammals - have found that increased protein intake caused changes in renal function - increased glomerular filtration rate and hypertrophy (ie increase in size).

Fluffythrows · 14/08/2019 11:43

Not going to offer medical advice op because I'm not qualified.

But your 'diet' sounds ridiculous. Do you really think your poor body deserves this?

Fwiw I've steadily lost a stone (didn't have much to lose(, I haven't cut out any food groups, I've simply cut down portions increased fruit, veg, protein and ate less crisps/desserts, bread etc without cutting them out completely and exercised. All without making myself unwell.

GruciusMalfoy · 14/08/2019 11:44

People on FB pages are not generally experts on a diet, half of them barely read what they should and shouldn't be eating as part of it. They hear one thing and do another. I'm on this sort of group too, and have seen people say "can I eat oats, what about beans, can I eat bananas?" Drinking salt water is nuts, especially in addition to the other stuff you've eaten. I definitely think you need medical advice.

recrudescence · 14/08/2019 11:46

There is a reason people don’t drink seawater.

littlewriggler · 14/08/2019 11:47

I don't understand the keto diet - isn't it all just short term gains? If you have to take vitamin supplements then it can't be good for overall health, neither can the increased amount of cholesterol. You might lose weight but increase your likelihood of kidney failure or heart disease...

Hope you feel better soon, op.

BeerandBiscuits · 14/08/2019 11:48

Guys, I read it on the Keto UK Facebook page. People all seem to do it there?

This will come as a surprise to you OP, but not everything you read on the internet is true.
Boggling at pork scratchings on a diet Shock

QualCheckBot · 14/08/2019 11:48

Is this a joke? Why would anyone actually consume all this salt and then complain (as if feeling surprised) that they felt unwell?

Its the doctors I feel sorry for having to deal with this level of stupidity.

Aside from that, no idea how you would expect to lose weight by eating so much.

purplewhitegreen · 14/08/2019 11:49

Can people please stop telling the OP to drink, she may have had top much water now which could also be dangerous.

OP the advice to look at the colour if your urine is sound.

Please call 111. It might even be nothing go do with the diet but coincidence, you never know. Get some proper advice.

RedWoollyHat · 14/08/2019 11:51

Why are some poster dissing keto because of what the the OP has done which is not actually part of the keto diet?

It's not the Keto diet in particular. I think it's because people get frustrated with the diet industry. If you're as old as me, you've seen dieting trends come and go and there are always "diet casualties" like this (sorry, OP). For every person who does a diet like Keto for medical reasons and under advisement of a nutritionist (there is a poster earlier who talks about doing his partner who has epilepsy doing this) there is someone like the OP, who embarks on a dramatic diet with no medical checks first, no supervision from a doctor or nutritionist, taking information from other ill-informed folk on Facebook, etc.... The number of people you see posting, "if only it was as simple as eating healthier food and moving about more", who when pushed have NEVER actually tried that and just jump from one diet to the next. There's something in a lot of people that will always make a dramatic "all or nothing" diet more appealing than gradual changes which would be more sustainable long term. It's human nature to seek a quick fix, but when you see posts like the OP's it's frustrating to see it played out like this. I think that is why people appear to be "dissing" the Keto diet.

LizzieSiddal · 14/08/2019 11:53

So a “diet” which lets you eat

Pork scratching
Crisps
Salt water

Hmm

Please stop this stupid diet.

Eat less processed food and move around more. You will lose weight.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 14/08/2019 11:53

I would strongly advise you to get your blood pressure checked TODAY and see a doctor ASAP for advice - if you can't see GP, go to A&E to see if you need urgent treatment. And read this piece of health info:
Eating salt raises the amount of sodium in your bloodstream and wrecks the delicate balance, reducing the ability of your kidneys to remove the water. The result is a higher blood pressure due to the extra fluid and extra strain on the delicate blood vessels leading to the kidneys.
Avoid salted food as much as possible and best advice is to NEVER add salt to your food.

YesQueen · 14/08/2019 11:56

Pork scratchings are fine on low carb. Salt water isn't. Get sorted OP and come over to the low carb boot camp page on here. It's sensible, healthy eating

Alsohuman · 14/08/2019 11:56

No @LizzieSiddal, a keto diet doesn’t include crisps or salty water. Done properly it’s protein, fat and no carbs. Perfectly healthy when you don’t follow bonkers advice from some stupid FB group.

ilovecherries · 14/08/2019 11:57

Guys, I read it on the Keto UK Facebook page

I guessed as much OP. I left that group as I thought they were batshit bonkers. If they weren’t drinking salty water they were guzzling bullet coffee. Honestly, low carb, healthy fat works really well without all of that. This just gives it a bad name. I hope you feel a lot better soon.

LizzieSiddal · 14/08/2019 11:57

Done properly it’s protein, fat and no carbs. Perfectly healthy when you don’t follow bonkers advice from some stupid FB group.

No carbs is not, in anyway, “perfectly healthy”.

TheFlis12345 · 14/08/2019 11:59

Everyone doubting the pork scratching element, good quality brands have trace carbs, most under 1g per 100g. DH is on a low carb diet at the moment and they are keeping him sane when he can’t have his beloved crisps! Bacon is also fine on low carb, all meat is.

BeerandBiscuits · 14/08/2019 12:00

For once I wish the Daily Fail would get hold of a thread. People need to know the risks of drinking salt water.
And OD'ing on pork products.

Bluntness100 · 14/08/2019 12:00

It's not no carb, that's ludicrous and nigh on impossible. Even cucumber has carbs,

It's low carb,

HeadintheiClouds · 14/08/2019 12:01

But it’s all extra salt, on top of the spoonfuls she’s drinking!

Alsohuman · 14/08/2019 12:01

Actually no or low carb is perfectly healthy. I haven’t eaten carbs for 11 years. My blood pressure is the envy of every hca who’s ever tested it and apparently I have the pulse of an athlete. I’m the only person my age (66) I know who doesn’t take prescription meds.

EffYouSeeKaye · 14/08/2019 12:04

*Pork Yourself Perfect’ Grin Actual snort!

Honestly. At no point did you stop to think that eating a bag of pork scratchings and washing it down with a pint of saltwater was possibly a daft idea for a diet? Fucking Facebook. It beggars belief.

I do hope you feel better op, honestly. And maybe think on a bit about Miracle Diets.
