To ask how someone can gain weight...

Nabana · 13/08/2019 14:32

Someone with a fast metabolism, with VERY limited finances, who doesn't necessarily want to just eat lots of cheap but unhealthy sugary things, but wants to gain weight and keep anemia at bay and be strong for my baby and get my boobies back after 3 months of EPing! :)

Also gets full up quite quickly. Just another hurdle there :)

I can't afford protein shakes powder and supplements like that. I am clueless about cheap but healthy protein and whatever else I need in food to gain weight.

I would really appreciate anyone's advice or experiences with this.

Peanuts and nuts are quite high calory and are healthy. As is cheese, that contains calcium which is good for you (although you might want to limit it to a certain smount because of tge high salt content)

managedmis · 13/08/2019 15:17

Peanut butter sandwiches

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/08/2019 15:18

hearty stodge.....stews and pies and pasta and mash...

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 13/08/2019 15:20

Make sure you use full fat milk, yoghurt, double cream, cheese

Add butter to your veggies

Bit of cream in your porridge or scrambled eggs

Peanut butter

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 13/08/2019 15:21

Pork scratchings. Lots of starchy carbs, butter, full fat dairy, meat with fat.
Or, if you were me, you could just look at a pizza a few times a week and put on half a stone.
I don't mean to humble brag but it's kinda my super power 💅 💪

JaneJeffer · 13/08/2019 15:25

Peanut butter. I lost a lot of weight due to illness and managed to put it back on by eating it every day for a few months.

Passthecherrycoke · 13/08/2019 15:28

It’s very hard to put in weight when you’re naturally very thin. The obvious answer is to eat a huge amount and reduce your activity but you might find it takes months to notice any real difference

What would you eat in a day at the moment?

SayOohLaLa · 13/08/2019 15:29

Greek yoghurt - high in protein. Get Aldi or Asda's own brand. Eggs as well, maybe as supper so you're having more smaller meals each day

PooWillyBumBum · 13/08/2019 15:33

If you fill up quickly could you try and eat more often, say 5-6 times a day? You could put some calorific but healthy snacks/small meals in fridge (e.g. dates stuffed with peanut butter) and set alarms to remind you to eat.

Might also be worth tracking calories for a while as you may find you’re eating fewer than you think.

notthe1Parrot · 13/08/2019 15:36

I needed to put on weight last year. I used full fat milk, avocado, walnuts, full fat Greek yoghurt and olive oil on everything! Just these five things, and kept the rest of the diet the same as before.
In four months I had put on the stone that I needed. Eight months on, my weight has remained stable. I still eat a little of the five items, but not as much as in the beginning.

This is a goldmine of great tips, thank you all! :) will re-read this tonight when I get little man to sleep.

Lol anastasiavonbeaverhousen That's pretty flippin' impressive! Grin

passthecherrycoke since having my boy 4 months ago I've been eating less and less as time goes on just because of tiredness, lack of money (DH lost his job and thankfully got one 3 days ago but before that we were living on my tiny maternity pay) and being so busy with the bub and general housework. For example, today I wolfed down a cold slice of pizza at about 8am, and now at 5:38pm I've just had a small mango snack box and I'm eating some pasta parcels, and that's it.

Ooh you should try my special sandwich - it was my favouite breastfeeding snack.
Thick granary bread
Peanut butter on one side
Thin slices of apples for crunch
Raspberry jam on the other side
I liked it with a cup of tea but you could have it with hot choc made with full fat milk for extra calories.

frizzattack · 13/08/2019 17:50

Do you like mayo? A friend of mine who struggles to stay at a healthy weight swears by mayo and olive oil and has it with pretty much every meal

AngelasAshes · 13/08/2019 17:53

Lentils and beans provide good protein as well.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 13/08/2019 17:56

You're going to need to eat larger meals, more frequently plus snacks.
I think you know the answer really.

Passthecherrycoke · 13/08/2019 18:10

You’re eating barely anything. If I were you and neeed to put weight on quickly and cheaply I’d be on the burgers, chips, pizzas, cheese, mars bars etc. Crap from
Iceland

Siameasy · 13/08/2019 18:11

Carbs plus fat would do it for me
So pasta in a butter/cheese sauce
Ice cream
Milkshakes
Butter and cheese on a jacket
Lasagne
Creamy curries with rice
Lots of dairy as you can see!!
All the things I never eat 😂😭

withaheyandahoandaheyheyho · 13/08/2019 18:53

If you're on a tight budget, cooking on a bootstrap has loads of ideas (making heavy use of peanut butter!)

LookingAtTheLovelyTrees · 13/08/2019 19:01

Healthy high calorie foods without added salt and sugar:
Meridian peanut butter
Raw nuts (not roasted and salted)
Coconut
Avocado
Decent bread from a decent bakery (check out real bread)
Chick peas
Other beans and pulses
Olive oil or coconut oil added to cooking
Coconut milk based homemade curries

AtleastitsnotMonday · 13/08/2019 21:41

If you are struggling to get enough calories without massively increasing volume look at adding ground nuts like almonds to dishes. If you bake a batch of flapjack adding ground nuts whacks up the cal but you can also grind them to a dust and add to stews, casseroles and sauces. In a similar kind of way you can add additional milk power to yogurts, custards, rice pudding, milkshake, cream based sauces, porridge etc.
What are you drinking? Can you get any additional calories there?

Newmumma83 · 13/08/2019 21:48

Could you make up a big batch of tuna pasta salad and munch from it through the day? Just make it a night apparently they last about 2 -3 days when in the fridge so only need to make some every other day or so. 400g pasta shapes , 2 tins tuna, tin of sweet corn , two table spoons mayo and perhaps some spring onion ... easy to eat on the run.

I find food prep hard to achieve when baby boy is up in day so cut fruits / make pack lunches for everyone the night before, try to have a dinner that’s quick not healthy but Asda do a double pepperoni pizza for 97p and it’s delicoius takes 18 mins to cook no prep time.
Avocados too £2:80 for about 7 wonky ones from Morrison’s healthy fats.

envelopeofpubes · 13/08/2019 21:50

Peanut butter, avocado and banana smoothies.

proseccoaficionado · 14/08/2019 06:57

Completely unhelpful, but can I donate a stone?😂

Winebottle · 14/08/2019 09:41

Protein is the worst thing to eat. It is very difficult to eat 1000kcal of protein. You are better off with processed carbs and fats, pizza, creamy pasta etc.
