Kids Fitbit and school

Aibu to let my 6 year old wear his Fitbit watch to school, I bought him this as he is lactose intolerant and we are controlling his diet and in doing so this is our chance for him to be active and lose a little weight as he's not so sluggish and bloated, so I bought his this to increase his fitness levels in a fun way but I want to let him wear it to school so I can see how active he is at school, will this get damaged or will he get spoken about for wearing an expensive watch to school. I just don't know what to do, thanks in advance for any advice and if your child has a Fitbit do they wear it to school?

My 7 year old DD has a Fitbit. It cost £70 and she wears it to school. Loads of kids in her class have them or cheaper versions.

If it gets lost or broken then I accept its not the schools responsibilty.

The middle child wears her fitbit to school. During the day they dont do much movement and if it's a pe lesson then all jewelry and watches have to be removed.

They've banned them at our school and I'm pleased as mine have been asking for them. No child needs to know how many steps they've done in one day. That's just ridiculous. They should be exercising and active naturally and not hyper aware of it. Just encouraging problems where there don't need to be in my view.

They should be exercising and active naturally

If people were doing that there wouldn’t be an obesity epidemic in the first place.

At my DC’s school they are allowed to wear them but have to take them off for PE (along with other watches and jewellery). Which kind of defeats the purpose a bit! As well as making it more likely to get lost.

dancingmom · 14/08/2019 11:11

@RhiWrites that's for parents to manage - it's just adding potential anxiety to childhood about something that should be completely unconscious.

gobbyone · 14/08/2019 11:18

I love the fact that parents are buying them and then finding out that schools make them to take them off for PE Grin

DD7 wears hers 24/7 - it never comes off, not for swimming or sleeping or showers.

That way it can't get lost. Her school don't mind though, it's only like wearing a watch, it doesn't have a buckle or anything either so unlikely to get caught up in anything while doing PE or whatever

Quite a few kids have them at my school. We don't have an issue with them, but also we don't take any responsibility for them getting lost and damaged. We'll keep an eye out if lost but if it doesn't show up it doesn't show up. They also need to be taken off for PE and other similar activities.

And no they can't bloody get out of their seat because their fitbit told them they sat still for too long.HmmHmm

My 10yr old wears her Fitbit Ace to school, it has her name in it. I have strange kids who have never lost anything Confused. She wore it on the condition that if it goes missing it's gone forever. I'm not the sort of parent to hold teachers responsible for personal items.

She did give me all the gossip when some boys had Fitbit Versas confiscated. They were playing games on them apparently. The Ace is just a basic step tracker and watch.
