Someone who has never stayed in a job longer than 10 months

..if you recruit as part of your job. Would this be a big put off?

I asked as I’ve never been put off. It seems fine to me to want to try different areas of work and often in our profession we work in locum short term contracts.

However my manager said she would be majorly put off by a candidate who had had several positions in just a few years.

Also if you’re hiring a project manager, then the one who has worked with 5 companies for a year at a time would be better than one who has worked in 1 company for 10 years. Probably more genuine too - nobody wants a BAU PM.

My CV shows bits and pieces of temporary contracts from the time I left school (2008, in the middle of the financial crisis and a crap time to find a permanent job!) to 2013. Between 2011 and 2013 I did have two permanent roles but the first was utterly shite and paid peanuts, and the second I left because I moved to a different city.

After 2013 (I was 23) I've stayed in each job for three years, climbing to the next pay grade with each move. Hopefully that doesn't look too flaky for any recruiters.

The world is changing and more people will be juggling several different zero hour contracts in the “gig economy” or being self-employed.

Plus automation making traditionally “middle class” white collar jobs redundant.

There are no jobs for life or even a number of years.

Definitely depends on reasons, Since Leaving a 4 year role in 2016 I had 2 jobs, one of 8 months one of 3 months, before starting this one 18 months ago. The 8 months one was promised as permanent, and then the place lost a big contract - last in/first out. The 3 month role I walked away from as it was not a healthy environment to work in. This role is brilliant, I've found a great fit and know I will be here a long time.
