As per title really. Out with DW, long car journey on Sunday, and we ended up talking about this (not because we are boring, but more because we were struck by the number of incidents we saw in an hour).

Counted at least eight instances of us at a junction, waiting to go straight on; car is approaching opposite, bombing onto roundabout at 30mph, no indicator on, so you think they're shaping to go straight on also.....but no! Suddenly they're turning right and cutting across you.

You can look at their road positioning all you want for hints, but there are just people who time and time again, seem to "forget" to use indicators.

Changing lanes on motorway....dozens of instances we counted where people suddenly pull out and hope you brake in time not to plough into them.

And yes I am boring, section 185 of highway code is in my head, I try and operate in a way that makes it easier for other road users.

So what is going on? Is it arrogance? Laziness? Are people more distracted by phones, etc that they think telling other road users what they're doing is less important?

Satnavs- people just following the instructions without any reference to other road users

I'm learning to drive at the moment and struggling with my nerves, reading about inconsiderate drivers makes me just want to give up.

I was on a lesson on Saturday taking the second exit on the left so I'm obviously in the left hand lane when a car appeared in the right lane and tried to over take me at the exit (no indicator either). Yesterday I was in the car with my mum and exact same thing happened to her, a car just bombed straight through the roundabout in the wrong lane and overtook with no indicator.

'Over-indicating' is indicating too far before turning so possibly giving misleading messages about your intent.

I was taught to drive decades ago by an advanced police driver. They were taught that six blinks of the indicator is the correct signal to give. I get the rage when driving behind someone who indicates half a mile before their turning. You don’t know what the fuck they’re intending to do.

I've noticed this as well and I'm being more cautious when I drive now. I think it's a combination of laziness, probably chatting on loudspeaker on the phone so distracted, and/or reliant upon satnav for directions so they forget to indicate.

I’m with you OP, I’m a driver but more often a cyclist and for the benefit of all road users, cars (and cyclists ideally) should signal their intentions. The amount of times I’ve been surprised at a left turning vehicle at a junction of a car pulling out in front of me. Makes my blood boil and I’ve had a few near misses. Just signal and I’ll be safer. I hand signal as often as I can on my bike too, unless cars are passing me too close in which case I don’t as I’m trying to stay steady so I don’t get knocked over and need both hands!
