Breastfeeding/nursing aversion

Hi there,

I think I’m experiencing nursing aversion. I didn’t even know it was a thing until I googled “why does breastfeeding suddenly feel horrible”.

I happily fed my DC1 until 1.5 (they weaned naturally) and currently feeding DC2 but very very rarely - usually only once a day when they’re finding it hard to settle/sleep and need a bit of comfort. I’m also 6mo pregnant.

Just wanted to hear if anyone else has experienced this and how you dealt with it... it’s such a strange and uncomfortable feeling. My symptoms are slight pain, discomfort, illogical rage/anger at having to feed, almost to the point of tears. I’m glad I rarely have to feed anymore and hoping my toddler will wean before the age of 2 like their sibling, but don’t want to force it any faster.

Just to add: I happily breastfed and really enjoyed the experience until recently. I’m pretty sure I experienced aversion with DC1 just before they weaned too, but I didn’t know what it was at the time.

How do you ladies cope?

I haven't experienced it, but I have heard of it. I didn't know it could come out of the blue like that though.

It might be your body's way of signalling that it's all too much with the pregnancy and the nursing on top of that.

How old is DC2? I'm assuming over a year (?!?)

I'd be tempted to wean if I were in your position to give your body a chance to get ready for the new baby. But that's just me.

I had it when pregnant and nursing. There’s 12 months between my ds2 and ds3 it was awful, I loved it previously and then suddenly it made me angry. Flesh crawling toe curling hates it.

It passes for me, but there’s good advice online

I had this when pregnant with DC2. I also felt violently sick whenever I fed. I chose to gently encourage weaning (we were down to bedtime feed and v occasional one in night). I used Dr Jay Gordon method and it was very gentle and worked v quickly. My DS was 23 months and within 7 days he seemed to have forgotten about BF entirely!
